I'm curious to what you all think about with subspace emissary. It's one of my favourite modes of play but I don't find many people taking interest in it. Fortenra Askasa I still main Kirby. Brawl still annoys me because of the "these are not stages, they are floating platforms in front of game related backgrounds" but I still like it more than Melee AND ALWAYS WILL MERCAIN. What do you mean by not stages and floating platforms? o.O Like, how you can go through some on the stage? Bourgeois IV » Kirby was my fav in melee, but with all the new characters in brawl, I kinda stopped playing with it. Toon link is fun too, yes && so is Olimar, but I suck with him. [ (。◕ฺˇε ˇ◕ฺ。) ♥ ] Aw, but brawl is fun with all of it's characters to choose so. Unphotographable Oh god.... here I go. Toon Link -> Sheik -> Zerosuit Samus -> Olimar -> Ganondorf -> Jigglypuff w/ sun bonnet -> Peach In that order. I like to be varied. :3
I refuse to play Jigglypuff if I cannot have the one with the sun bonnet... it's just standards! The reason I list all of those is because my friends and I play an insane amount of brawl, and that's the list I go through to play EVERY TIME. USUALLY in that order, too.
I love brawl. <3 My favorite stage is probably the bridge of Eldin? My friends and I really try to balance everything out and play in different stages every round.
SO. On the topic of "casual" vs. "not casual" brawl gaming, all I have to say is that 90% of the time when I'm hearing people talk about it, all I can think is "WOW. THEY SOUND LIKE PRETENTIOUS ASSHOLES. : D I'M GLAD I DON'T TAKE A VIDEOGAME THIS SERIOUSLY."
Haha, I never really liked Puff's costumes in brawl. I really like the melee ones. Particularily the bow and the crown, and the flower one in brawl is the only one I really like. Some douchey kid uses the green headband so I stopped liking that one. I'm weird though, I'm the only person I've met who prefers the red ear tie and tie more than the goggles on Pichu. Yeah, you got the name right. Why that stage? It's kinda fun, but I usually liked to play it with smashballs for all the weird effects you could do with the reforming bridge on that stage. Giant puff free for all for the win! Haha, "casual" smashers usually play in the way they most like, while "competitive" smashers do the same thing: a match one on one on stagnant stages for a match of nothing but skill with no interruptions. What's wrog with what the people said? Shadow_Articuno Oh yeah, i just remembered i liked zero suit samus too, though i'm not the best with her. On the subject of taking stages off of random, I took off a few stages like the DK jungle one, and smashville. My favorite stage is probably spear pilar. Does anyone take any items off or all of them? I took off all the healing items except the team healing item. I also took of th ray gun, and the timer. Zero Suit Samus is awesome. I thiiink this is the video that I saw awhile ago while reseaching matchups, and I was so tempted to switch to zss or add her to my DK MK team. I wasn't planning on adding videos to this discussion but there are some videos that I can't help but share this. Two of my favourite brawl pros too. Really? How come Smashville? It's probably my favourite stage in brawl, aside from maaaaybe Lylat Cruise. The DK jungle stage I always had a soft spot when playing with my more casual friends just for bramble blast. <3 Spear pillar is really awesome. Which is your favourite of the three? Creselia, Diagla, or Palkia? I found Palkia had the most messed up of the transformations, so I liked his the most, and disliked how Cresselia would only attack things. I general play without items due to standard tournament play, but there is a mode I have general fun doing that my friends made called "Hellbox". It's a custom stage of a box with 3 holes in the box, two in the top and one on the right, and bumpers, green shells, and smashballs on. It's a lot of fun and I can try to share the stage with someone if they want. My wii can't read disks so it'd be hard for me to get it for you guys unless I saved it on a sd card at a smashfest I go to.

I just don't like smashville.
Diagla, Palkia's changing the way the screen is anoying, and I agree with what you said about Cresselia.
I dislike playing with out items.

Shadow_Articuno I loathe playing with out items. Seconded.
Levels I rarely play on (removed them from the random listing): -The boring levels: Final Destination, Battlefield, Yoshi's Island (Brawl Version Only), Onett, Rainbow Cruise, & Corneria. -The annoying, low visibilty levels: Jungle Japes & Brinstar.
I miss Saffron City from 64. cry
Also I checked up on Ike's combat style today; I've come to the conclusion that he is much better fighting in item-less battles, not necessarily for dual battles. Yet, his counter move seems to me to qualify him for dual battles. (That means I include Peach, Lucario, Wolf, Falco, Fox, & Marth in this category.)
@Unphoto: I'm just generally an excessively serious person... I take everything far to seriously, but that's no excuse. I don't know how to redeem my character of this in your eyes. sweatdrop But, hay, TOON LINK!!!
I think and talk about things, mostly because I'm lazy. I like to figure the best/simplest decisions before doing anything.
((Butterfingers describes the player's tendency to throw items away. Like using the Super Scope once and then tossing it away, or bouncing the Ray Gun off of an opponent's head after firing it only a couple times - effectively adding more to the item's life.
I like using these titles from Melee, because I fought against someone who called himself a "Juggler" from tending to juggle opponents in the air very effectively. He beat me almost all of the time and I came to kinda respect him for that.
Of course, in the middle of a fight, I show no respect, I hold no honor, and the only pride I recognize is when someone Suicides when they have the advantage and want a clean slate to fight with.))

I mean in melee the stages felt like they were from the games, but in brawl they are mostly platforms. Like New Pork City is a good example.

Mercain, It's just that I feel like the whole "I'M A SRS BRAWL PLAYER" bit is really pretentious and that there's a lot of looking down on the "casual" smashers. It's just always been something that's really irked me. Just the overall attitude of it.
Why do I love the bridge of Eldin? My friend Amanda's (Heavensdark, she's in this guild!) first choice for characters is Pit, and when I'm first warming up I like to play as Toon Link. So, when the middle of the bridge is gone, we usually take to standing on opposite sides and spamming projectiles. She uses that energy arrow spam, and I take it as a good opportunity to warm up my dodging. And then whenever she gets distracted I like to shoot arrows of my own, or practice my aim with the bombs. (Okay, long story short. I know the bombs throw like every other projectile... but there are too many instances where I'll throw the bomb at someone and then run into the range of the bomb, damaging my opponent, but also lightly damaging myself)
Hahaha... talking about items on/off? Well, me and my friends USUALLY are just bullshitting, so most of the time we do keep the items on. But, whenever we know we're going to be going to a con or a tournament, or anywhere where we could be playing brawl by official rules, we usually buckle down and get srsly4srs.
My favorite NOT srsly4srs thing to do is to put items on high, turn off all items except pokeballs, and have everyone choose the four pokemon characters. : D (Hell yes jigglypuff with that sunbonnet!) Then we choose one of the pokemon arenas, and go wild.
Also, I don't know why I'm so fond of bonnet-puff. Maybe it's the blue ribbon on it? I don't know, but ever since I started to get used to how to play jigglypuff effectively, I can't go a brawlday without playing as her. :3
SUBSPACE EMISSARY? I love it. I really do. I have 4 different files, my first completed file which I'm pretty sure I did on normal. And then 3 files for intense, because I have three friends who like to brawltrain with me, and that's USUALLY where we end up going after we play a few matches.
I hate the final boss with a passion, but I have to be thankful to it. My biggest downfall in all the smash games is that I've ALWAYS hated the dodges. I've always just avoided using them as much as I could, and then I'd use them when I'd be absolutely desperate. But Tabuu made me learn how to do dodges properly because of that ******** move he does with the three shockwaves. For the longest time my friends and I could not even beat boss battle mode on normal because of that move. We finally did, though. :3

Funny how unphoto beat me to it... Yes, Pit is my favorite, followed by ZeroSuit Samus.
Spear Pillar and Onett are probably my two favorite levels. I absolutely hate levels that move except maybe Pirate Ship. Bridge of Eldin's only fun when I play unphoto as Pit vs Toon Link.
For items? I prefer to have them on. Sure, some people are really talented without weapons but with my group of friends, some people are just SO BAD that if we don't have them on that it's the same people competing every time, so the items give them the advantage.
That brings me to another point, if you're into serious competing or gaming, have fun. I personally prefer friendly competition to get like 5 minutes worth of bragging rights.

Yeah, Tabuu was kinda stacked against you by overpowering some dumb dumbie. Is it just because it's generally rather plain, or the difference between final dest. and battlefield? I didn't like Diagla as much because mostly it was just slwoing time down, and I'm not much of a fan of slowed slow gameplay. @__@ Triskellion Shadow_Articuno I loathe playing with out items. Well, remember that people can catch items when they're flying at them with enough skill! Counter is only actually only as good as the player is, not making the player better or worse. When you use it right, you won't miss it, you'll use it when you KNOW they are trying to attack, while when you use it wrong, your opponent will know that you are going to try and counter. At higher levels, it comes down to reading your opponent right. Actually, butterfings is missed grabs. Butter Fingers -500 Most grabs failed (cited from smashwiki) You're probably thinking of minimalist, which is oddly not listed on the list there for some reason, but if you still have your copy, you should have it on your list somewhere in Data. It'd be amazing if anyone got through Melee without getting that. There's another one kinda like Maximalist, but it's not like that, idk the word though. I remember Fortenra Askasa I mean in melee the stages felt like they were from the games, but in brawl they are mostly platforms. Like New Pork City is a good example. ha, I didn't even realize that. I actually have a lot of fun on the moving stages like Rainbow Cruise and melee's pokefloats. It's pretty easy to adjust to even with a great player on you, but just kinda keeps it everchanging. Adapting basically. Kinda sucks when you get screwed over though, but I don't seem to run into sudowoodo while respawning or falling blocks blocking my way up. Yeah, almost all competitive players that I know stay in it because it's fun. Sometimes it sucks because there are so many different skill levels, but you learn a lot or you can help teach osmeone to get better to your level, as well as the times you find someone DEAD even with you where you basically start nearly breaking your controller from an over tensionious (I made the word up) grip with sweat pouring down your forehead leaving you with a big headache but a lot of sastifaction once it's completed. I just wiiiish that my set against Xer0Gravity, in either pools or actually tournament (pools are done for seeding in the tournament, while tournaments are the actual bracket with the double elimination and that hootenany.). Clooosests matches of my life, and..... I won them. Muah. <3

Hold R or L while leaving the character selection screen, and Zero Suit Samus will start first. You can tell because once it gets to the screen listing stages, it'll show thumbnails of characters, and you'll see samus's face instead of the helmet for your appropriate slot.

I'm going to quote my brother on this one: Izzy Items require no skill to use. Turn off IF in tournament play. Proof of purchase: *I forgot who, but it was supposed to be a good player* lost to an *Less than 8?* year old kid during an items tournament. That is the "Shame of a Nation" right there. I would counter the argument of "if you're hit by the items you're stupid", with, "If a box that's barely moving touches you while you're floating back to the ring, something's wrong with that." OR a character gets a smash ball while another person's respawning and they win because of it. Of course, this is only if its tournament play. No vid to prove, though, but hey, it's like this video I found: (Posted for raising awareness of Blazblue and also because the video had my precious Bang getting killed.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2q9nAYXKsO8

"Real men use items!" Items make they game fun, and of course you need to turn them off in a tournament, but it is ok for casual games. LOL CASUAL I SAID IT. It annoyed me a few weeks ago when I was just messing around and having fun and my friends needed it to be "fair" and stuff. I still beat them but I think it would have been more fun with items.

Mercain Really? I've never really thought of Rainbow Cruise and Corneria to be bunched with FD (final destination) and battlefield as boring. FD and battlefield I could see, but Corneria and Rainbow Cruise too? Those two stages are my biggest pet peeves in levels. Corneria and I have a long history of dislike. In 64, Corneria was the largest level in the game and it has hard to see what people were doing when the fighting was divided across the whole stage. Then in Melee, Corneria was shortened a bit making it tolerable to the eye, but that's why it became even more popular that before. Having to play on the same stage so often really gets to me.
In my experiences moving stages are far too unpopular. Remember Icicle Mountain and how everyone hated it? I'm used to people refusing to fight using the "no contest" buttons on that stage (even some Ice Climber players) and to compensate they'd offer to fight on Rainbow Cruise, effectively I got bored with the level as I feel it moves too slowly and it was the only moving stage others would accept.Quote: Well, remember that people can catch items when they're flying at them with enough skill! I don't disagree with you here, it's just very few people in my metaverse are skilled enough to fight like that... which is just depressing, isn't it?Quote: Actually, butterfings is missed grabs. You're probably thinking of minimalist. Just checked thst site, I was thinking of Bull's-Eye KO and Sniper! pirate Izzy Items require no skill to use. Item battles and Non-Item battle require whole different skill sets. But both do require skill.
I must admit that my skills are mediocre when it comes to 1-on-1 and/or Non-Item battles. Because when it comes to fighting I am a very cheap and dirty. All I need to win is a little chaos to throw off my opponent as I hunt him down in the midst of the fray. twisted

Mercain Well. the reason they might look at themselves as serious smashers is becasue they look at all aspects of the games (even items; they actually spawn more around the winner than they do the loser, as proven by Wobbles, an Arizona smasher) to make them as good as possibles. Matchups, hitboxes (palces where your attacks will hit, kinda like how on luigi's aerial down a there is a small hitbox on it that will spike or send the oppoent straight downard instead of it's general up and awaaay hitbox that usually hits.) and just about anything in smash that you can think of are theorized and tested by people to prepare them as they grow as experienced brawlers. How big of attendents? Run by fellow players or establishments and businesses? Hehehe. Yeah, Subspace emissary is one of my favourites. It actually burns my balls because one of the greatest parts of it is the whole plot (or what there is of it) since it's just like, "omg, link and yoshi" or "Link vs Mario!" and all that jazz. Okay, so they've spent a lot of time on the game. They've contemplated the rules and realized that they need to get their opponent in a certain box of range. Um... So what? That's something you pick up along the way of playing the game. The more times you miss somebody, lets just say with Toon Link's up smash, the more you need to think about where you are in relation to your opponent. You need to notice if the person flies off after your done, or sticks around. You need to move closer, you need to move farther. I don't find comprehension of hitboxes, or anything in smash for that matter, to be impressive in any way. It's a videogame. Other people understand it to, there's no reason to get on a high horse.
Also, I went back and read my post and immediately realized I made it sound like I went to 0979868969 tournaments, or something - and that's simply not the case. 3 I was getting all heated in my anti-srsbrawl talk that I made myself sound more reputable? No clue why. Anyway, all tourneys I have been in have been organized by players. One was at a convention (Not a brawl convention. xD ) and a few online tournament. The convention was Ubercon, and I forget the online ones because they're all from guilds I've since left, and a website I've since lost. 3
Okay, Link and Yoshi is weird. But Pikachu and Samus? Weird. Just weird.
I SAW SOMEONE, FORT, MENTION NEW PORK CITY. UGGGGGHHHHHHHH. Basically, playing on that stages makes me want to slit my wrists. It is large, very large. It is so large that it makes me angry. I hate it.
@heavensdark: D: Sorry. You never post in the Sniped D'. So I assumed that not even a brawl thread would get you to post here. 3
@Trisk: I'm sorry. 3 My opinions aren't like a judgment on all "brawlers." Just the jerks that think they're immediately a better player because they like to do things srs4srsly. Spending a lot of time playing the game makes you better, yes. But it doesn't give anyone doucherights. <3
