There. Now he didn't look anywhere near as sad. Magdelen smiled, but was still watching fascinatingly pink-haired Ylaine; at least one question was answered, but she didn't think that asking someone about their hair color would be taken well. Instead she held her tongue and looked down the hallway after Sam's gesture. If someone was inviting her, it'd be okay, right? She had to wonder, though, if he was being nice or if he was just that daft.

Well, not like she cared. She had opportunities to talk to someone, now, and that would be good enough for now, right? She sorely longed to explore this place (it seemed weird but normal, if that made any sense) but with no excuse, she didn't know how she could manage it. Frowning, she looked from Sam to Ylaine as the other girl walked away, and with a shrug that was barely noticeable, she started to follow the other girl again. Not like she had much better to do, and it would be weird to just run off again.

Ylaine walked through the double doors into the dining room and headed straight to the kitchen entrance, a bit of bounce in her stride, Magdelen and Sam trailing behind her. She had the Tupperware in hand before she was even at the kitchen door. When she entered, she found exactly who she expected to, working in his apron as always. He smiled to see her and she pretended not to notice or care, putting on an air of disaffection. "As-Salaamu Alaikum, Ylaine," he greeted.

But Magdelen and Sam were still behind her and as she set the Tupperware down beside the sink the entered and Ylaine's return greeting fell dead on her lips. They were following her like puppy dogs. Worse, her alone time with Miguel was being stolen.

"As-Salaamu Alaikum," Miguel said to Sam and Magdelen. He was entirely too good-looking, with yellow-brown eyes both kind and deep and a dusky Mediterranean complexion. His was the kind of handsome women went to Spain to take as lovers.

She took a couple of steps forward, glanced around a little and tried not to look too out of place. Hey, it was... it was... just a kitchen! Well, that was only mildly disappointing, because it was still a kitchen in a hotel where people lived and that was new. She almost started over to a cupboard to look inside, just to see how big the pots were, but then someone was looking towards her and Sam.

It was immediately striking that the man speaking was handsome, though she wasn't much into romance. Like, it was not a face that she would ever forget, at least, and it was entrancing; not as interesting to her as the pink hair and the purple eyes, but definitely one of the most handsome men she'd ever seen. "Nice to meet you," she said uncertainly, upon being confronted with a greeting she didn't understand. And then she looked around again, and said quietly, "Can I look around? I promise I won't touch anything, I've just never been in a kitchen this big before."

"Be my guest," said Miguel, raising an eyebrow at Ylaine in a way that made intelligence seem to dance across his features. She only sighed in response. C'est la vie. He turned on the sink and began to wash the Tupperware, sensing that perhaps her day had been a bit stressful.

Eyeing the pots and pans, Sam stayed near the kitchen entrance. Too many times had he found the kitchen to be a place of calamity and disaster. This was possibly one of the reasons Ylaine chose the kitchen: it was not a place Sam often went. "I'll just, um, go and... back to what I was doing. It was a pleasure to meet you, Magdelen."

"It was nice to meet you too, Sam," she said, already engrossed at staring at the pots and pans and the implements found in a drawer. Also she was trying to make herself less of a nuisance, at least until she could escape, because she probably couldn't stay for very long without a reason.

She had never seen this many forks in one place before, and she really wanted to poke around and see how many forks exactly there were, but she had said she wouldn't touch anything, so she didn't, and she stayed quiet like that would help Ylaine forget she was there until Sam was all the way gone. (She really wanted to know, though, if Sam wasn't her dad, where were her parents? Did she have parents this question was burning through her mind.)

Finally, she gave up and said, "I'll leave if you answer a question."

Ylaine might have wanted to get rid of Magdelen and Sam, but it was not so direct a desire as to want to be rid of Magdelen in an overtly uncaring manner. Not in front of Miguel, anyway. She pulled up the stool she had used in the kitchen ever since she was very small and Miguel had given her half an olive to eat. She had no trouble pulling herself up onto it now, though it was tempting to ask Miguel for help anyway. "I suppose that would depend on the question," she said levelly, resting her elbows on the metal cooktop and looking at Magdelen with half-lidded, contemplative eyes. In this position she could have been a wise and knowing older sister instead of a selfish and unfriendly stranger.

She carefully shut the drawer she had been investigating so as to not make a noise. Out of all the questions, which one should she ask? It wasn't likely she'd ever see Ylaine again, so she had to choose carefully; while thinking, she pulled open the next floor. "Wow," she said, almost to herself. "Didn't know there were this many different kinds of wooden spoons."

Parents, maybe. She could ask about that, or about the hotel, or about Ylaine's pink hair- was it always pink? Or maybe about the outfit, which was crazy and interesting and one of the reasons she had followed the other girl all the way back home, or about the language that the guy had spoken when they had walked in. There were all kinds of questions, really, and she wanted to ask them all!

"Maybe two," she muttered. There was so much she wanted to know.

Miguel was watching with curiosity as to what Ylaine would do, hands busy scrubbing out the Tupperware. Ylaine was one of those people you watched because you simply could not help it. She was very entertaining. As Magdelen seemed to have discovered.

"You may ask four questions," Ylaine said, managing to make what was an attempt at generosity sound like she was taking something away from the other girl.

Four questions. She could definitely fit everything into four questions. Magdelen slid the next drawer shut and turned back to Ylaine. "Is your hair always pink? I don't remember seeing the color before but you're in level three and I'm not so maybe that is why."

She paused to choose her next question; if the other girl wanted to answer her first question while she thought, that'd be okay. If not, she might have a bit of wait- but the next three questions popped into her head like machine-gun fire and she rattled off:

"Mr. London said you lived here but if you do do you live by yourself? Why are you in level three? And- and-" This question was sort of awkward, and her voice lowered accordingly, and she half-whispered, "Where do you get your clothes?"

Ylaine had not expected all four questions to come spilling out at once, but she probably should have. If the questions had been one at a time, she would have taken more care in answering them. "Do you always rush?" she inquired of Magdelen, but did not wait for a response and launched straight into her answers: "I change my hair often, I live by myself, I do not require any schooling but I am forced to attend, and I find my clothing in stores or have them custom-ordered."

Smiling, Miguel turned off the sink and put the last of the Tupperware pieces on the drying rack. He turned around and leaned against the side of the sink, elbows resting on the edge, and looked at the two girls. It was nice to have some feminine presence in the hotel besides Ylaine and to hear a child's questions for a change.

"Yes," said Magdelen, though she didn't think Ylaine had heard her. She did always rush; it wasn't like she had time to take things slowly. But then there were answers and she paid attention. There was not as much information as she would have liked and there was a tiny tic to her eyebrow in slight annoyance. But she didn't have the right to be annoyed because this was Ylaine's house, and Magdelen was the intruder and not a guest at all. Still...

She smiled. It looked a little odd on her, like it wasn't an expression she was much meant to have. "Thank you for answering my questions," she said, but then she faltered. Normally she would just say see you at school, but, she didn't think she would see Ylaine. Or she could just say good bye, but she didn't want it to seem final. Ylaine was... nice, in a dry sort of way.

For instance, she hadn't commented once. On anything. That was a nice, to Magdelen.

"Did you want to know anything else about the kitchen?" asked Miguel. Apparently the four questions restriction did not apply to him, as he was always happy to share whatever limited knowledge he had with inquiring minds. (As opposed to Ylaine, who hated to share her near-limitless knowledge with anyone, though she sometimes seemed unable to resist the compulsion.) "I should probably start fixing dinner soon but I make exceptions for company. Or-- I can show you a knife trick."

Ylaine might have gotten upset about the fact Miguel had never offered to show her a knife trick but she was instead momentarily caught up in the brief thought of being grabbed and pressed against the counter in a hungrily desperate kiss, some sort of clever one-liner about being on the menu for dinner tonight, and then being laid across the cold metal countertop...

She immediately brightened, the minute straightening of her shoulders showing her interest. Boy, did she ever want to know more about the kitchen! Dad never used the kitchen, he always brought home food from work or ordered take-out if she had had a bad day and couldn't be left by herself. Kitchens, therefore, were pretty much a mystery.

Magdelen had also never conceived of anything quite so dangerous as a knife trick- at least, not something as benign as such - and as much as she wanted to know more about the kitchen, she wanted more to see what exactly this knife trick entailed. "Could you?" She had momentarily forgotten that she had promised to go after her four questions, it seemed.

"It would be my pleasure," said Miguel with a sweeping bow, the kind you always imagined in the courts of old when a suitor asked a favor of a lady. He went to the giant industrial refrigerators and opened the left one, reaching down into one of the bins for something. "Let me see here, what would be good. Ahh, an orange, a cherry. Maybe not a grapefruit. A peach, then." He placed each of the fruits in his apron as he named them, with the obvious exception of the grapefruit. "Now I take these... Ylaine?"

Ylaine was still rather distracted by the ongiong fantasy in her head and it took her a moment to register that her name was being spoken in reality and not as part of the rather graphic exploits of her own imagining. Flustered, she exclaimed, "What!"

Miguel's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "You seemed distracted."

The reaction was so familiar it bordered on automatic: "If I am, it's no concern of yours," Ylaine said, realizing her own idiocy even as the words were leaving her mouth. She looked away, covering her face with one hand to hide her expression from Magdelen and Miguel and pretending it was only to brush the pink hair of her wig from her eyes.

Miguel looked at Magdelen and shrugged, crossing over to the other side of the kitchen with his fruit to set up the trick, which involved placing two cutting boards in the corner against the wall and lining up the fruit in order of size.

Ylaine pressed her hand against her forehead as if experiencing a headache, which was not far from the truth. Not that she hadn't said or done anything she wouldn't have done normally, just that with Magdelen's eager presence her own bitterness and rancor seemed magnified in comparison.

She followed Miguel to the fridge, still bright red from the chivalrous bow. Once, when she was home sick, her dad had let her watch Hamlet. The bow reminded her of the Prince of Denmark, except Miguel did not seem nearly so depressed. This, she thought, was a good thing, since he was doing knife tricks.

Man, she thought, if he's trying to build up suspense he is succeeding! A cherry and an orange and a peach... she liked peaches, except when they were very hard. Ylaine's outburst shocked her; she jumped slightly, staggering a bit when she regained her balance. She stared at the other girl with confusion; why was she being so weird? Sure, Magdelen could be like that sometimes (though she would note that she'd never snapped at anyone who had a choice about being around her). But it seemed weird for Ylaine, who seemed normal and somewhat companionable, to snap.

(This was just proof of how little she knew of Ylaine.)

Again following Miguel, she stood a short distance away; her eager expression spoke volumes for her, anticipation in the way she gingerly leaned forward onto one foot to watch what was to happen.
