"Just get the dog away and I'll show you," Faolan said, wanting to almost add "and then kill you" to that. He didn't move from his position, knowing Zia was freaking out, the Essentic digging its little toes and fingers into his stomach.

Eli nodded and ordered Kell to back away and stay, pleased when predictably the canine moved about twelve feet away and laid down down. He was still watching the humans but was no longer growling or really close enough to be a threat.

Fao looked down at the lump in his jacket. "Ay, ay . . . my wee bairn. It's okay now. The dog's off and you can come out." He hoped it wasn't a bad idea to let the man see Zia, but if it came to it, Fao would protect his Essentic with his life. His expression showed as much, despite the soft concern for the little creature reflected in his eyes.
Eventually, Zia poked it head up, peering up at Eli with wide-open rainbow-colored eyes.

The auburn haired man stared confused at the little thing for a moment, what exactly was it? Cute for one, he had to admit and he felt bad for letting Kell scare it, the poor thing must have been terrified. " What is he?" Eli asked, guessing at the creature's gender.
Kell peered at the creature from where he laid but made no move to come closer, it didn't look like a prey thing.

Faolan looked up at the stranger slowly, not sure how to answer. "It is a, um, spirit." That should work. Maybe. "I'm the carnival's fortune teller and occasionally we mystics like to have familiars. This one is mine. Cute little bugger, isn't it?"

A spirit eh? Eli knew nothing about magic or fortune telling and honestly it seemed plausible to a degree. Plus if it was a private thing, the bond between the magic user and the familiar he supposed the horned man would want to keep that private. On the other hand spirits should not be picked up by Kell's nose which made that excuse illogical.
Still Eli nodded and smiled " Quite cute, does it have a name? Oh and sorry about Kell he's um getting up there in the years." Whatever it was the man had seemed to like it's owner and wasn't any species Eli knew of. Still as far as Eli could tell there was no need to report the man for having it and he'd done enough of sticking his and Kell's nose in other people's business.

Fao gave a soft sigh of relief. For now, it seemed the man was buying it. He stroked Zia's little feathered head and smiled a bit. "I call it Ziazan, and my name is Faolan." He still was wary of the man, but so long as he believed that Zia was a spirit and had no intention of harming either of them, Fao was alright with the man's presence.
Still not entirely fond of the dog, though.

" I'm Eli, and you both have interesting names " Not he strangest he had ever heard but definitely different. " Does Zia's have a particularly special meaning?"

"It means 'rainbow'. Zia always reminds me of one, particularly its eyes," Faolan said, getting the Essentic out of his jacket to hug to his chest. Zia's eyes were partially closed in content, but they definitely were all the colors of the rainbow.
The young man looked up at Eli. "You're not part of Farstep, are you? I know pretty much everyone here and I've never seen you before."

Eli had to admit the creature's name suited it and was sort of whimsical in and of itself, not unlike a rainbow. He shook his head at Fao's question " Just passing by." Perhaps he should get going too, he found Zia to be highly interesting and he was quite curious about it , but it wasn't fair to make Kell lay there in boredom while he satisfied his own curiosity.
" You sure I can't reimburse you for the beer and the uh trauma?" Though at the moment Zia didn't look at all that distressed anymore, nor did it sound like it.

Faolan shook his head. "No harm done, really. Zia gets excitable sometimes when out of its element." He looked down at the Essentic, noting it was now staring at the dog. "Curious about your new friend, are you?"
"Yes. What is it?" Zia asked softly, eyes opened wider now.

Eli smiled down at the small bird like thing " Kell's a dog, scent hound to be more specific, it means he spends a lot more time than a normal dog with his nose to the ground smelling things." He left off that Kell was a hunting dog, not wanting to scare Zia again.
Kell from where he lay watched Zia with curious brown eyes, his tail wagging just a little.

Zia put out a little wing-hidden hand. "Doggie!"
Well, that was probably not the reaction Fao was expecting and his expression showed it. He looked up at Eli. "Your dog won't hurt it if Zia pet on him, eh?"

The man shook his head quickly, with the right commands Kell was harmless even with the most delicate of creatures. He called the dog to heel again and waited.
Kell rose slowly to his feet and trotted over to see the pair of humans and the strange feathered something that smelled just a little like the weird person from before. The dog sat obediently at Eli's feet, but his nose at least was well within touching distance for the small creature.

Zia giggled and poked at Kell's nose, then squeaked. "It's wet."
"It's just snot, Zia," Faolan explained and was rewarded with a dirty look from the Essentic. Clearly, Zia did not take kindly to snot on its tiny hand. It started wiping it off on Fao's jacket. "Ay! No, Zia!" He just gave a long suffering sigh as the Essentic continued wiping dog snot on him, giving Eli a "see what I put up with?" look.
