Keshet beamed with pride. "I go on patrols with my daddy, but he let me explore, as long as I can still hear him call for me." The teasing lilt annoyed him a little, and he asked, "So, where's your family, fuzztail? Do they let you join them on patrol?"

Chione's nose wrinkled at the question. "Why would you need to go on patrol? The beaches are safe so long as you stay out of the deep water. And so long as you stay near the adults..." Pausing, she turned, glancing behind her. Well.... woops. She'd failed at that much, anyway.

"We travel to other places," he said with a bit of pride. "We go anywhere and everywhere we can, wherever the wind takes us." He was nonplussed about her comment about safety. "I see. So, fuzztail, where's your family? Aren't you theoretically supposed to be in sight of them?" He grinned anyway, since this filly was fun in her own way, a way that neither colt nor filly truly comprehended yet.

"Theoretically, meaning that on some level I should be within view?" Chione's gaze turned back to Keshet. "Theoretically I am in view..... if one of them just happens to fly over...," she grumbled, then shook out her mane, pushing it away as though the question had never come up. "But doesn't that get boring? Just wandering around everywhere all the time?"

Kesh grinned. "Nope. We almost never stay the night in the same place twice. No two places are identical, and since we're always going new places, we're always seeing them for the first time. We're never bored." He cocked his head. "If one of them flies over? Can your mommy or daddy fly to find you?" It would make a great deal of sense if at least one of the filly's parents had wings like the filly and could fly.
((You know...I don't think they've officially introduced themselves yet.))

"But what if you really like a place? You never go back to it to see it again?" Chione's nose wrinkled. "Of course they can. Well, my mom can, at least. And my brother." That struck a chord. Why couldn't her dad fly? She cocked her head to the side thoughtfully, one ear flopping. "Anyway, it's not fuzz-tail. It's Chione. Chi-Ohne." She pronounced it slowly, articulating as she might for a child.

Keshet paused to think about that. How would the herd deal with it? Surely they could always come back to those places--? But what about other such places they wouldn't see if they stayed put? "Well, I guess we'll see it again someday, but what if there are other really beautiful places we wouldn't see if we stayed in one place?" He grinned. "That makes sense, Chione. I'm Keshet." He privately decided that he was still going to use Fuzztail as a pet name for this filly. It was too fun an opportunity to pass up.

Chione clopped a hoof thoughtfully. "I guess so. So you stay with your whole family? And you move around a lot. Keshet..." She spoke it carefully, as though testing. What an odd name. But he was an odd colt. And so incredibly colorful. Wasn't that a danger? Then again, if his herd was large... She turned. "It's just us. Me, my mom, my dad and brother. Oh, and Embri. We found her on the beach, where we live."

"Yep. There are ten of us most of the time, and it's fun. Maybe you could come with us someday." That would be fun. And he might be able to taste her again. Any other kirin would be disturbed by the fact that Keshet felt this way about Chione, though a little relieved that he only liked Chione's taste. The size of the herd didn't worry Keshet one little bit, or the colorfulness. It didn't entirely occur to him that anyone would dare attack such a big herd, especially with so many strong males around. "Embri? Is she a friend of your family's? What's she like? Does she fly, too?" Admittedly, the concept of flying kirin intrigued him.

"Maybe so." Chione's ears flicked ever so slightly. But would she miss her mom and dad? Jii? A passing thought. Would he go one day, off on his own? She pushed the thought away. No, it didn't seem possible that someone so close could suddenly just be gone. She forced a smile, oblivious to Keshet's cullinary ponderings.
She hmm'd softly at the question. "Embri is Embri. She acts a lot like my mom and dad sometimes, more than a foal." A nod to the third question. "She's all cream colored, and yeah, she's got wings too. But she can't fly. Not yet. My brother and I - we can't either... our wings are too little..."

Keshet cocked his head. "But how did you get off the ground just now?" How could she not fly if she could spend as much time as she did off the ground using her wings? That confused him. This Embri.... "Maybe Embri's just really little?" That would make sense, that she was a grown-up, just smaller than other grown-ups.
He wasn't worried about missing Chione, not just yet. Besides, if her herd stayed in one place, and he remembered how to come back here, or could at least track her down, he *should* be able to see her again...though maybe they'd be a lot older by then. Oh, well. He'd still find a way to find the kirin who tasted so good to him. "Hey, your family doesn't move around, right? If your family doesn't move around, maybe I'll come back and find you someday."

Chione's nose wrinkled. "I jumped. Well... with help." She fluttered her wings. They weren't good for much yet, but they would give her an extra boost. "You think so? But she's only about as big as me..." A light shrug. It was possible that she was older. She did act it, after all.
The second part confused her briefly, though she nodded after a moment, glancing back. "Over that way. There's a path through the sea grasses. We have a shelter under the trees." An odd pang struck her at the thought. That's right, the colt would be moving on soon. "You'll be back here...?"

Keshet smiled and nodded. "Yep, I'll come back and find you someday, if you want. We won't stay here forever, there are too many interesting places we haven't seen yet." It occurred to him that he really wanted her to come with him someday, to see all those amazing places they hadn't seen yet. "When I come back for you, come with us, Chione. It'll be fun, seeing all those places together."
((You know, I think we're getting to a good breaking off point. Should we end this one and start another one when they meet up again as adults?))

Chione offered him a nervous smile, the timidity of her youth showing through. Still, she was curious about those things Keshet had seen. Would see. And it's not like she couldn't come back. She had some time to decide, anyway. Finally, she nodded uncertainly. "Whenever you come back..."

Keshet smiled and offered her a friendly n**. "Well, I'd better get back to the herd for a quick nap. We're moving on early tomorrow morning. I'll see you again someday!" Yes, he would come back someday. He would take her with him. They would see all sorts of fascinating places together, and they'd make trips back to this seashore, to visit her family when she got homesick. He had it all planned out, and he was excited for the day when he would see Chione again.
