My petsmart also has a tank full of under water plants but none in the tubes actually.

Some petsmarts have the tubes, some don't. The one closest to me has the tank only, the one that I prefer is farther away and only has the tubes.
It should be a safe bet to buy the ones in the tank, but beware you will probably end up with hitchikers (snails/snail eggs or anything else that hides in plants).

will they have anything that can hurt my fish or crawl out of the tank? those are my main worries with hitchhikers.

They shouldn't. If the tanks are all on a central system and their fish have any diseases, your fish could catch those from the plants. That's why people suggest quarantining your plants before you put them in with your fish. If you have a quarantine tank that works. I don't though and I just plop everything right in. It's dangerous but so far so good on my part.
Anyway, at my Petsmart, the plant tank is on a different system than the fish tanks, so I think if that's the situation, there shouldn't be any worries about diseases.

I really like Java Moss. :3 I have to re-grow some because my ball died some how.
I also like java ferns. The first week i had them they sprouted baby java ferns so i had like 50 baby plants X3. I still have a few from that, but not many i threw a lot away.
Java Ferns do better when attached to something instead of planted in the gravel. (Generally I just let them float around and wedge somewhere to attach, sometimes it fails and they end up growing in the filter though. XD) But you can attach them onto a rock with a rubber band and in a few weeks you would be able to remove the band :3.
As for Java moss, I just let it float around, It will also attach to things, So you can just rubber band it to a rock.

I got java moss but it was from asia so it died on the way over. Some of it started to green up but them my crayfish ate it all. She also ate one of my java ferns so I moved the rest to a crayless tank.
