"NO YOU FAT!" Jasper hollered back. "FATTY WAR-RUS! FAAAT!" Enraged, Jasper threw all of body weight against Tristan, his cheeks puffed with rage and his hands clenched into tiny fists. He wanted hot, furious revenge on Tristan -- how dare he insult him in such a way. He was irrefutably, most definitely not fat. After flailing wildly for several minutes, Jasper simply opted to smack Tristan repetitively in the face with the condom packet which, after thirty seconds of abuse, sprung a leak, dripping lubricant over the two boys.
"EEEEWWWW. WHY COMBOM MAKE WET. They bloons! Bloons NOT WET. THIS YOUR FAULT. YOU ARE FAT."
It was all too much. Leon had completely betrayed his trust, Jasper was screaming like an air raid siren and Zephyrus didn't understand the simple concept of a Unicorn. It was lunacy. Lucien, shocked and scandalized, flapped his hands at the ashen-blonde twin and pouted his lips. "U'corns! They're horses with wings and horns! They're pretty and magical," he reached into his rucksack to prove his point and pulled out a small, purple unicorn made of fiberglass and plastic. "I call this one Vivi. Her real name is Violet, but I like Vivi better."

Tristan clenched his teeth, hot rage flushing his cheeks and making his blood coarse through his frame. He used all of his tiny body’s might to shove the other boy off of his chest. Before Jasper could pin him down again, Tristan jumped as far back as he could. Tristan panted heavily, his entire body sore. The cherub stared down at his chest and arms, awed at how the pressure could remain there even though Jasper was far enough away.
“I’M NOT FAT!” he shrieked, waving his arms to show how Jasper had hurt him. “LOOK AT WHAT YOU DID!”
He curled his hands into fists, ready to retaliate at the out of control child until the strange viscous fluid dripped down through the corner of his mouth and landed on his tongue.
“Grapes,” Tristan said, suddenly forgetting about the argument. “It tastes like grapes!”
Leon gaped at the scene and decided it was time to take action. He took advantage of Jasper’s sudden preoccupation with the cherub and snatched the packet of condoms from the boy’s hand. He followed Tristan’s example and quickly stepped away from the boy in his fit of rage.
“This isn’t for you to play with,” he said calmly and sternly.
Meanwhile, Zephyrus faced yet another panicky kid. He shied away slightly from the flailing Lucien and examined the plastic toy in his hands.
“I’ve never seen one before,” he said softly. “Why isn’t Vivi moving if she’s a horse?”

Jasper crossed his arms over his chest and bit at his lip in hot-white rage, pushing himself forward threateningly.
"WHAT YOU DID!" he hollered, his shoulders jutting upwards. "YOU ARE FAT -- what?" Without hesitation, Jasper shoved a finger in his mouth and rolled it under his tongue experimentally. He pushed his lips out and made a strange wailing noise reminiscent to a dying cat before throwing his hands in the air with an expression the screamed he's right! He reached one hand out demandingly and rested one hand on his hip, wiggling his extended fingers in want before realizing that Leon had taken the package for himself. He looked at the man witheringly, which was actually pretty hilarious coming from a boy who could barely string coherent sentences together, before scrunching up his face in disgust.
"GIVE BACK NOW! ASSFACE! YOU SUCK! GIVE NOWNOWNOW!"
Lucien smacked himself in the face with a dramatic warble, his expression wilting. "They are amazing and awesome," he said matter-of-factly, pulling another from his rucksack. "And she can't move because she's only a pretend unicorn made of toy. But we can made her move like this!" He wiggled a small orange and yellow unicorn in front of Zephyrus in an obvious attempt to make it either walk or fly.

Leon took a defiant step back. He eyed the aggressive Jasper, and the less threatening Tristan with a challenge in mind. Leon’s parenting skills -though very limited- were being tested through this motley bunch of toddlers. The man pursed his lips and looked Jasper down; he could not show the boy any fear or intimidation. He had to think... fast.
“You can’t have them!” he cried out, attempting to put together a viable excuse as his mind raced. “They’ll turn you bruised! All purple and sore! You don’t want that, do you? What would I tell your mum’s?”
Leon’s brows were furrowed with false concern as he attempted to sell his bullshit.
Crap.
Zephyrus nodded slowly, attempting to show Lucien that he understood. In reality, he knew nothing about unicorns. This was the first he had ever heard of them, and Mara had shown him an encyclopaedia of animals, beautifully illustrated and very detailed. The boy loved horses, so he would have definitely remembered if he saw one with a horn on its head and wings. Mara wouldn’t conceal something like this from him. Zephyrus smiled shyly at the plastic toy.
“She is pretty,” he said. “Can I try?”

Jasper openly gawked at Leon, his fingers curling against his palms; he was preparing for tiny fists of rage. "YOU'RE LYING, YOU-" the unnecessarily yelling grated to a sudden stop and Jasper, fists held high like a boxer, turned his rapidly diminishing look of self-assurance to Tristan. He dropped his hands to his sides and, if it were at all possible, his cheeks would have reddened; the package had turned the twin's tongue purple. His tongue was bruised. His tongue was bruised.
"YOU TRY KILL US! YOU TRY-- YOU KILL US! YOU ARE HOBBIBLE! HOBBIBLE MOODERA!"
Jasper threw himself at Leon, fists flailing. He wasn't sure if the grapple of limbs was about to work in his favor, but he continued indiscriminately, consciously aware of not leaving any part of the man's body unattacked.
Lucien, who had easily and without-delay tuned his wailing brother out, nodded enthusiastically and extended the figure towards Zephyrus. "Yeah, I have heaps anyway. You can have Blossom, and I'll have Vivi." He rocked the winged horse across the ground and whinnied a terrible impression of a whinny.

“WAIT!” Leon yelled, shielding his face from the child’s array of punches. “Wait, wait, wait!”
He jumped away from Jasper, preventing the boy from advancing by putting his hand firmly on Jasper’s head, forcing him back as the child attempted to push his way towards Leon.
“You and Tristan will be fine,” he said the most direct tone he could muster. “Bruises go away, right? I told you not to play with those! See, you have to listen to me!”
He grimaced as he heard the words escape his mouth. He doubted Jasper would take that well. Fortunately for the babysitter, Leon thoughts were coming quicker to him as he came up with plans to quell the children.
“I’ll get you both an ice cream so your tongue doesn’t hurt,” he said loudly. “Sound alright?”
Tristan analyzed Leon with distrust in his eyes. Maybe the ice cream was poisoned too- but he did tell them not to play with the comboms, and ice cream was quite a wonderful notion. He poked at the tip of his tongue, feeling a sore sensation spreading over the surface. The cherub winced and then nodded warily at Leon’s suggestion.
Zephyrus held his amusement with a kind smile; Lucien was quite terrible with animal noises. The twin mimicked Lucien’s actions with the unicorn, even attempting a whinny himself. The sound that emerged from the boy’s mouth was more of a warble than anything a horse would make, which caused the boy to blush severely. He laughed shyly at his attempt, following Mara’s advice to “laugh with others rather than have them laugh at you.”, regardless of his utter embarrassment.

Jasper puffed angrily at his cheeks and flailed against Leon's hand. It was inevitable that eventually the boy would start yelling again -- and yell he did, a censured commotion that echoed out in odd directions; it came from behind him and under him and around him and over him, muffled and screamed, shrill and hoarse, an endless siege of white-noise that bit at the ears and cut at the mind. It was not, however, difficult to see where the shrieks were coming from -- Jasper, it seemed, had ceased all attempts at moving past Leon's shieldhand and was now furiously stamping his feet and, as aforementioned, screaming. He wanted hot, unrestrained revenge or in the very least an attempted murder charge.
"It a trick," he hissed, fists shaking and feet itching to be stamped. "You mooder with ice cream them hide in walls them steal Lucy to sell on streets for more ice cream."
Whether or not Jasper understood exactly what he was saying, it was undoubtedly the comment of a child destined for a criminal record in petty theft and resisting arrest. Or loitering. Or trading pistols filled with street-bought cocaine. Or all of the above.
On the other side of the emotional spectrum, Lucien positioned himself to sit cross-legged in front of Zephyrus and was grinning the grin of a happy coma. He clapped enthusiastically at the boy's attempt at a whinny which was truthfully closer than his own personal attempt, though he'd never admit it, and wiggled his figurine towards Zephyrus'.
"Hi Blossom," he breathed, trilling his lips. "You look lovely today!"

Leon and Tristan both covered their ears during the onslaught of wicked shouting, wondering what horror awaited them if this screaming persisted. Tristan was wide eyed in horror and awe, never before had he heard someone be so very loud! Even when he yelled, Tristan couldn’t even begin to compare to this; the twin’s eyes shone in admiration at the vocal chords of the young Jasper.
“IT’S NOT A TRICK,” Leon yelled, unaware of his volume thanks to keeping his ears covered. “I HAVE NO REASON TO HURT ANY OF YOU!” Tristan uncovered his ears and scowled at Leon, taking Jasper’s idea to heart. “You’re a bad man!” he yelled. “That’s why you want to kill us!”
“IF I DID ANYTHING TO YOU,” he yelled. “MARA AND GRACE WOULD KILL ME, THEY WOULD. I’D RATHER NOT RISK IT.”
Zephyrus flinched at the yelling persisting on the other side of the room. He shied backwards, making himself as small as possible. He hated shouting. And arguing.
“How can you stand it?” he asked Lucien meekly, attempting to raise his voice to make himself heard over the screams.

Jasper stared puffer-faced and puckered at Leon, his fists shaking a little less violently; he did make a very valid point. Upon the untimely deaths of himself, Lucien and the two twins (of whoms names he didn't remember, or simply didn't care to remember), it was almost certain that Mara and Grace would take it upon themselves to 'hang Leon up by his balls'. Now, the slightly less furious and slightly more devious Jasper didn't quite know what that meant, per say, but he knew it involved either undeniable pain or a cease in existence, both of which the boy was quite content with.
"That's right," he said, a smug smile creeping over his jagged teeth. "That's right, they kill you for kill us. Okay, okay, I has a preconition! If make mounteen of ice cream them we not tell on." Jasper threw his arm over Tristan's shoulders and elbowed him a little in his side (an admittedly poor attempt at convincing the twin to agree). Still, a mountain of ice cream was enough motive, right? And he didn't even elbow him hard.
Lucien shrunk back a little and shrugged his shoulders. "He's my brother," he replied, pulling at a strand of plastic hair. "I don't like it, I don't enjoy it, but he's my brother. Wouldn't you do the same?"

Tristan winced a little, but held in the pain. Jasper had sharp elbows, but he did make quite a nice offer. He pondered on how Mara would react if she found out about this ‘barter’ they were doing. He didn’t consider it for too long, seeing as he really had not figured out the concept of morals.
“Yeah!” he hurriedly agreed. “A mountain, Leon!”
Leon groaned and uncovered his ears, wishing that what Jasper had just proposed could have been blocked out. Unfortunately, what was heard could never be unheard. He let out a sigh and tried to balance the pros and cons of the offer. If he did give them the entire few boxes of ice cream he had, they would get sick and Grace and Mara would be upset. On the other hand, he would have to spend the rest of the evening in peace.
“Wait a minute,” he said after that moment of consideration. “I am not making a deal with a kid.”
Tristan looked up at him, unsure of how to feel. He didn’t really know Leon that well, other than the fact that Mara liked him and he was nice enough to them, but the twin felt betrayed by Leon’s words. The tiny and almost unnoticeable halo of light flickered slightly in his disappointment.
“One ice cream for each of you,” Leon said sharply. “And that’s it. Any more trouble and I will let Mara and Grace know about your behaviour. Then you can go hang out with them when they go drinking.”
On the other side of the argument, Zephyrus nodded in complete understanding. Though they were nothing alike in both appearance and demeanour, they were still family. Tristan was closer to him than even Mara.
“I understand,” he said with a shy smile. He then proceeded to ‘walk’ the plastic pony towards Lucien’s.
“Thank you Vivi,” he said, his words deliberate as he tried to figure out what these mysterious flying, horned horses would say to each other. “Your hair is very....shiny today?”

Jasper smiled smugly, pleased with Tristan’s agreement; he had unquestionable power over the situation at hand, something a toddler of such bearing should never feel they have. However, the boy was quickly brought back to reality as Leon came to the realization that, no matter how hard Jasper may wish against it, his mother had power over almost everything in his life, giving Leon the immediate upper hand. While inwardly gaining more respect for the man’s ballsiness (and his unexpected lateral thinking), Jasper was less than amused with the compromise.
Considering the offer fleetingly, Jasper crossed his arms over his chest and mumbled a quick, pseudo-defeated “fine”, the corners of his mouth twitching.
Grinning from ear to ear, Lucien brushed a strand of hair from his nose and fisted the air in delight; Zephyrus was picking up on the game so quickly – it. was. awesome. Lucien trotted his plastic figurine towards the other, trilling his mouth once more and tilting his head to the side.
“Thank you! I brushed it this morning,” he wiggled the toy and flicked its mane. “And yours is as beautiful as ever, Blossom. Would you like to come on a flight with me? I was able to get above the clouds yesterday; they were so pretty, like popcorn.”

Leon smiled tensely, attempting to hide his pleasure from this victory. Thinking it over in his head, he had the power to tame the boy—in a way at least. After tonight’s terror, he could just discard any future offer to babysit the children. Grace would tell Jasper to simmer down, and they would continue their drinking adventures and Mara may realize how amazing of a guy Leon is; how caring he is for her children, and agree to go out with him. It was perfect.
Leon then moved to the kitchen, and took out a box of ice cream sticks from the freezer.
“Zephyrus, Lu,” he called to the boys. “Want some ice cream.” Zephyrus took a moment from their play to nod in his most energetic way (which was actually quite slow for a normal child) to Leon. He then turned his attention back to the unicorns.
“I would love to go flying,” he said passively. “Did the popcorn clouds taste like popcorn?”

Jasper smiled a false smile, the corners of his mouth sharpening. Perhaps it was simply that he was the child of Grace, a woman of known misanthropic and ego maniacal nature, but it was becoming glaringly obvious that the boy didn’t like to lose; in fact, it was almost as if he tried to manipulate circumstances to suit himself – much like his mother, he didn’t need approval or niceties, he didn’t want approval or niceties, he simply wanted unrestrained reign. It wasn’t even that he wanted a sense of control anymore, his ego needed it.
And Jasper, well, Jasper was always willing to do whatever it takes.
Lucien’s concentration, known to lapse frequently, shifted eagerly towards Leon; and he didn’t just give a customary nod (which was all that was necessary, really) – no, he clapped his hands, whooped a little and exclaimed: “Yes please, with a cherry on top!”
Equally as excited as Zephyrus, if only a little more open about it, Lucien whooped under his breath once more before bringing back his attention. “Only sometimes. Yesterday they tasted like caramel. It was yumtastic,” he pulled the figurine up over his head, fwoofwooing in an attempt to mimic flapping wings. “Catch me if you can!”

Zephyrus broke character to honestly exclaim, “I love caramel popcorn!” before lifting up his toy again and imitating Lucien’s flying noises and motions. He strained his tiny arms to try and catch Lucien’s rapidly swerving and swooping toy unicorn.
Leon laughed at Lucien’s excitement, noticing that the boy had gotten over his anger over his accidental fall. “I’ll do what I can about the cherry, Lu,” he said, rummaging through the freezer.
He fished through the frozen meats and boxes of instant meals and finally came across a box of chocolate covered vanilla ice cream bars. He took out the unopened box and removed 5 bars from them. Placing them on the table, he grabbed a bowl and filled it with some cherries that he had bought the other day.
“Alright, kiddos,” he said with a smile, ice cream in one hand, bowl of cherries tucked in the crook of his elbow. “Here’s your ice cream.” He handed the first one to Jasper, then one to Tristan, then Leon moved carefully to Lucien and Zephyrus, handing them the ice cream bars and leaving the cherries on the coffee table beside them.

Lucien’s erratic flapping ceased almost immediately as Leon handed him his ice cream, and if it were at all physically possible his grin would have split upon the sight of cherries wedged under the man’s arm. “I. Love it too, but not as much as. Ice cream and cherries!” he said between grunts, tearing brusquely at the paper surrounding the bar. “Than’oo, Leewon. Wheh yoo fin’sh woul’ yoo like to pley ‘corns wif uf?”
Jasper rolled his eyes as his brother attempted to talk around yumming his ice cream with the determination of that obese child from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (which he made a mental note to thank Grace for indirectly handing him a derogative term for his brother via attempting to shut them up through television). After rudely snatching his ice cream from Leon, and repetitively rolling his eyes at Lucien as he waited for Leon to finishing handing out the rest, he moved so that he was able to tap Leon less than gently mid-back and raised himself onto his toes.
“I tell Mara you love her and babies,” he stated loudly, pointing a threatening finger. “I will, I will, I will! Straight-shooters don’t lie!”
