His smile becomes a bit less forced-feeling as the growing awkwardness eases away once more. He doesn't think he'll resort to medicine just to convince his body it likes something that it shouldn't, but its interesting they would -make- such a thing...

His interest seems to pique at the concept of snow cones.

He's never heard of those before, but his mind can easily paint a picture of what they are. What other flavors do they come in?

This is, by far, the least-stressful conversation he has had since even before arriving in Gaia....

Oh, wow. Where does Melody even begin? She supposes it would depend on where they got sno-cones. They just have SO MANY FLAVORS it's impossible to name them all! surprised

Let's see... there's cola and root beer, both of which Melody likes, and Tutti Fruiti and orange and lemonade and banana and lime and blue raspberry and cherry and strawberry and spearmint and Melody's even heard of a place that has a DILL PICKLE sno-cone! Yuck! And there's some places that have flavors that taste like alcohol drinks but aren't! Drinks like Pina coladas and margaritas and strawberry daiquiris and mai tais and fuzzy navels... OH! And then there are flavors like spicy cinnamon and sour apple and coffee and there's even a tea flavor, she thinks and...

Oh... oh dear. Melody didn't mean to go on such a tangent... sweatdrop But also, if Hitsuga doesn't like any of those flavors, her Grandma June has a cafe, and Great-Grandpa Setsushi works there, and she's got a lot of other syrups in different flavors, and maybe, just maybe, if Melody asked very nicely, she'd let them experiment!

Or, she supposes, if Hitsuga just wants a cup of tea and a pastry, he could always get one there.

And once again, Melody finds herself rambling. It's been a very long time since she's made a new friend; she can't help but feel a little too excited at the prospect.

Hitsuga momentarily boggles at the number of flavors she suggests. For as many things as it seems, to him, that Gaia overlooks, it seems they are, at least, thorough in their desserts.

....to the point of being repulsive, it sounds, as he tries for a moment to even envision the briny, bitter taste of pickle flavored ice and forces himself to stop before he turns his stomach just from the imagery.

His realizes his hold has gone a bit lax on the handbasket he holds and he quickly readjusts it once more to keep its small cargo of fruits, vegetables, and spices from falling to the floor and rolling every which-way.

Hitsuga would be most honored to visit Lady Melody's grandmother's cafe at some point, he assures her, the projection a pleasant, if a bit flustered one, as he flushes once more. He inwardly chides himself. If he is not panicking, it seems, he's falling all over himself making idle conversation. How he's made any good acquaintances here is beyond him....

Oh...! But, he does not wish to keep Melody from her shopping! gonk He offers an immediate apology. Comfortable to talk to or not, that is no reason for him to forget his manners in the presence of a lady.

....perhaps they could continue their conversation as they walked? sweatdrop

Melody seems to have momentarily forgotten that they'd been, until their meeting, grocery shopping.

If Hitsuga's basket is becoming heavy, perhaps he would feel more comfortable if he set it down in Melody's cart for the time being? The extra weight would be hardly noticeable, Melody assures him, and when it comes time to pay for groceries, they could separate their purchases easily.

And if there's anything else Melody can do to help? Melody may not be as smart as her aunties and uncles and great grandpa and her slightly-bigger brother and her mother and Daddy (Even if, Melody admits, he has a VERY VERY DIFFERENT way of showing it), but she does know her way around a supermarket!

The pink in his cheeks becomes a bit more pronounced at the offer and he gives his head a shake, keeping a firmer grip on his basket. No, no, that's all right, he insists. He'd just been lost in his thoughts for a moment, that's all. sweatdrop

And Lady Melody shouldn't worry herself. She is, very likely, MUCH smarter than he is about Gaia. Markets and beyond.

Melody beams at that, but quickly glances away. Perhaps not... after all, she still never bothered to learn to read...

He furrows his brow a bit at that, having not precisely been given an option growing up. In addition to having the arts, history, and chemistry pounded into his head, reading was a necessary side-venture to learn.

Hitsuga, nonetheless, knows it is not his place to judge how things may or may not be done here, and offers projections of reassurance. If it makes Melody feel any better, he does not know how to read the Gaian language either. Therefore, she -still- knows more than him about Gaia.

Melody smiles shyly at that, idly reaching out to touch a box of corn flakes. (Should she buy it? Ehhhhh... she doesn't think she'll eat it.)

Well, if Hitsuga ever wants Melody's help, she'll be all too happy to give it. And even if she can't tell him what things say, she can probably tell him what they DO.

Which reminds her, she needs to look for the right size batteries for the portable amp her Grandma June bought her so she can go out and test it and see how the sound quality compares to a regular one. Probably not all that well, she reasons, but for that kind of portability, she can overlook a small drop in sound quality--

Ah! She rambled again!

Is there anything in particular Hitsuga is looking for? 3nodding

He blinks owlishly at her, what she's just said having sailed fully over his head. .....he rests his case sweatdrop

At the question, his dark eyes flicker down to the basket he holds, skating over the contents. It contains things he intends to eat, things he intends to -try- eating, and then a few things he intends to express oils from, provided he can fit them in the press.

He isn't sure he has anything particular in mind, but....

....oh! He perhaps has something Lady Melody can help him with. What would be very helpful to his work would be a pair of tweezers. Does she happen to know if there is such a thing here or where he could find them?
PostPosted: Thu May 07, 2009 12:39 am

Tweezers, tweezers, tweezers...

Ah! Melody knows exactly where to find those! With some effort, she wheels her cart around as quickly as she can (comically throwing her weight around with all the grace and elegance of a drunken water buffalo) and motions for Hitsuga to follow her.

She'd just come from the pharmacy section, and beauty products were juuuuuuust past it!

Hitsuga steps back, narrowly avoiding the nose of her cart having an unfortunate meeting with his hip as she turns it around. eek

....and then he follows after her, giving her his deepest thanks for her assistance. If left up to him, who knew how long he'd be here?

....though the answer, him being how he was, was probably 'not too much longer'. Finished shopping or no.

Melody, just happy to be helpful, leads Hitsuga past the soaps, past the cosmetics, and finally, just next to the nail polish, a rack of eyelash curlers, eyebrow brushes, nail scissors, files, brushes, and, of course, tweezers.

It isn't her place to pry, so Melody certainly doesn't ask, but she does wonder what sort of work he does. To have found a job so quickly after coming to Gaia--

Wait. How long has he been here, anyway?

He....hasn't really kept an exact count of days, he's afraid, considering all that's happened. A week, perhaps? Maybe a few days more....

He selects a pair of tweezers from the small plastic bin they are situated in and tests them, clicking them on the air a few times between slender fingers. These will be fine. 3nodding And much easier than trying to transfer small pieces of things to vials via hand.

As he moves to put them in his basket, he happens to catch a look at his reflection in one of the magnified mirrors fleetingly and does a double-take at himself. He looks, in short, like hell. His face is devoid of makeup, making the dark half-moons beneath his eyes from lack of sleep stand out starkly against his pale flesh.

His eyes flick to the display of nearby cosmetics, emotions of embarrassment and self-consciousness radiating off of himself like a small flock of birds taking wing.

As if on cue, Melody proceeds to unsubtly scrutinize Hitsuga, squinting as she attempts to locate just what seems to be embarrassing him so. A spot? No... a bug bite? Maybe a pimple? Noooo...

Finally, finally, she seems to grasp what seems to be bothering him. And suddenly, her projections shift from curiosity to concern.

Has Hitsuga been having trouble sleeping? Is he maybe homesick, or perhaps simply it is a bed that's too lumpy or a pillow that's too soft or perhaps--?

Fuss, fuss, fuss. Mother, mother mother. It would seem Melody is learning her new role before she must undertake it.

The peppering of concern and curiosity makes him draw in on himself as if to try in vain to make himself small enough to dodge it.

No, no, no. Its all right, he assures her, trying to gently dissuade the questions as he offers her a smile. Its....to be expected in a new place and all before one adjusts to change. He'll be fine. He -always- ends up fine.

He is only sorry Lady Melody has to see him this way. He usually takes much better care of himself than THIS...! gonk He has no excuse...

Hitsuga reaches out, fingertips skating lightly over a couple of items before grasping a piece of cardstocked packaging that contains a powder compact within its protective plastic bubble. Beside it is featured a drawing of a pale-skinned woman of....well, he isn't sure WHAT race, exactly, she is. But the fact she is applying it to her face gets its point across well enough...much better than starey-eyed birds did.

This, too, goes into his basket, followed shortly by a thin, red pencil. And a black....stick-thing. He is not sure what exactly it is, but the picture of thickly-lashed dark eyes on it seems promising.
