Slowly, as if half-paralyzed, Remi jerkily reached around Valiant as she cried on his shoulder to pull her into a hug. "It's okay..." he muttered, numbing shock still running through his mind like greased lightning. He was going through motions he didn't know, trying to comfort someone when all his life he had been incredibly self absorbed.
But Valiant wasn't just anyone. Somewhere in his still-childish mind he knew that she was as important to him as his violin, without her, life was weird and strange and less wonderful. "Val, come on." Pulling back, he looked her up and down. "You're clean and pure as moonlight." And she was. The moon to his sun, the night to his morning, one of his best friends and...
And more than that. Whether she felt like she deserved him or not. But still, he wasn't ready to confess to her straight out, despite her crying and confessions of her own. Forcing a weak smile on his face, he shrugged. "You're right. The girl I like would have to have long blonde hair, and pull dumb stunts like stealing my violin bow, and be able to stand up for herself even when I'm acting too much like a hero to realize I'm being a jerk, and of course she'd have to be musical. Playing something like the... flute? Maybe." He looked at her gravely. "If you don't know anyone like that, that's a damn shame. But I think that she's out there, whether she knows it or not."

Valiant Brushed her hair out of her face desperately, to look Remi in the eye. She could no longer trust her ears, for it seemed to her that he was admitting that he liked her. But then the eternal mockery cut in. Why would he be meaning the words he was saying, what was she to him but a person to go on adventures with. No. She couldn't do it, yet as she looked up at him through teary eyes and a sheet of hair she couldn't run she couldn't do what she meant to. "Why am I so stupid? Why did I ignore the signs?" she asked no one in particular as she laid her head back onto Remi's shoulder. This was not going to go the way she wanted, and it would do nothing but hurt her. But.... but... She looked back up at him, it was selfish of her, but she wanted to be loved by the other cat, not necessarily as a mate, but she needed to be loved.

Remi coughed embarrassedly. "I wasn't exactly being obvious." he said, oblivious to just how blatant his feelings had been. "I'm very subtle." The statement would make Neptune choke on his laughter, but Remi prided himself on an excellent mastery of emotion that he simply did not possess.
He looked down at her and gave her a grin. "Hey..." he said, reaching over to twirl a piece of her blonde hair playfully. "It's gonna be all right, okay?"
The difference between Remi and Valiant was that Remi had never been really hurt before. He was full of a boundless optimism, could bounce back from anything. Though he could try to comfort her, he could never know how she felt.

Valiant gave a surprised laugh. Remi, subtle? What exactly had she missed? Then he said the words she knew was never to be true. It would not be all right, the world was never "all right". She sighed and pulled away from him, was it truly her place to correct him? Val wanted to though she knew he would have to learn on his own. She felt as though ancient in those thoughts, as though she were ageing in front of her very eyes. Her thoughts circled around what she had become, and what she was becoming. There was no place for someone like Remi in her world. With tact she composed herself by hiding her despair behind a veil of false hope. "do.. you really think so?" she asked willing him not to see the pain behind her eyes. What was she thinking? She would never be a part of his world, and him being in hers would mean he would have to loose that childhood optimism she had grown to love. Valiant hated change, and with all of this dumped on her it was her breaking point. She was loosing everyone... Schmee would be next, and so on and so forth... but she didn't want to leave as selfish as it was, she wanted to protect Remi to help him keep his optimism. Val thought of Ishtar, Raco and the others, she was not truly alone, but it felt as though she was.
Remi would never know what it meant to be completely alone in a room full of people. She gave that dull smile again and hoped for the best. Perhaps he would remain oblivious and not see through her facade.

Remi nodded gravely. "Even when my own grandpa was going to give me away, I knew things were gonna get better. I mean, as long as you do something about your situation, it can never suck forever, right?" He stretched languidly on the branch. "Sure, things may look bad, but you have to remember that you're in charge of yourself. You can do something about it."
And that was that. That was Remi's creed, how he got from one situation to the next, how he survivied life no matter what it threw at him. It wasn't just optimisim that kept him going, but his sense of right and wrong, his morals, and his motivation to change his own life for the better. "Yeah, things can look hopeless or tough," he continued, "But you're a pretty brave girl, right Val? You've been through this crap before." He flashed her a weak grin. "You're too strong to let something like this break you. I know."

Valiant faced him speechless; you would think the poor boy was vomiting rainbows or something really. Valiant reached over and rested her hand on his cheek. “I’m sorry Remi, but a lot has changed, and I’m not that girl you met anymore. I dance on the thin line of good and evil to often now.” Val stroked his cheek once and kissed him on the forehead. She was lonely and tired, held down her entire life. “If you need me I will always be here for you, I do love you, and I think I always will… but I can’t sit here and hurt you. If you were to come to me I would give you anything you could possibly need. I just can’t do this. Truly I believe you will be over me very soon indeed, you’re not the type that would allow a silly girl to hold you back.” She kissed his nose and looked him in the eye. I’m sorry.

Remi's eyes widened in surprise. This wasn't how it was supposed to go! The hero got the girl and she was good and wonderful and pure as snow and everything was okay...
"I'm not giving you up," he told her frankly. "There's more good in you than you think, Val. When you realize that, and I hope you do, I'll be here." He got off the tree branch and looked back at her. "But I'm not chasing after you. This is your adventure."
Bow retrieved, Remi left, and it wasn't until later that he let his wounded pride catch up with him.

Valiant stood on the branch for a long while, contemplating if she had made the right choice. Would he truly be there for her when she was ready? She honestly doubted it. A man’s mind never truly settled. With shaking hands she brushed a lingering tear from her face and set forth unto a new life. Whether or not Remi took part in it was yet to be told.
