Laika watched gleefully as the second puppy came rolling down. She was fast! Wagging her tail excitedly, she bounced after Waka as she rolled by, cheering her on and then padding up to her when she wobbled. She looked really dizzy! Laika found that to be a great thing.
"You were the best one yet!" She said the the silent puppy, enthusiastic and sincere. She bent down, nuzzling the little wild dog like they had always known each other. She perked up when she heard Eusi rolling, turning and looking back to see her coming to a stop near by. She had been even faster!
Looking back down at Waka, Laika grinned.
"I guess your mommy is the best one out of all of us! But you're second!" She wagged her tail again, nudged the puppy encouragingly to follow, and then bounced the short distance over to Eusi, nuzzling her excitedly.
"Mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy!" Kidege twittered excitedly as Eusi came to a stop by Laika. She bounced up and down, needing her mom to look at her right away.
"Did you see me?! I rolled! And Waka rolled! And you did too! That was fun! I want to do it again!" She giggled and bounced over to her sister, licking her ear because she missed her cheek in all the excitement.
"You went far!"

Eusi obediently glanced at Kidege first, giving the puppy her attention. "I'm listening!" she told her, smiling. "That's right, we did all roll! Well, haha, give Waka a minute and we'll go back up and roll down again. You can go ahead if you'd like, love."
The grey wild dog rolled over and walked to her mute daughter and licked her cheek too. "C'mon silly," she cooed. "You can walk. The more you do it, the faster you get used to it again."
Waka grinned and giggled again, giving her mother a silly, clownish smile before trying to get up again. Her little feet started walking slowly, then faster, then faster, and finally she tripped over herself and rolled down a little slope not too far away.
But she did feel good about getting all that praise from Aunt Laika! She hadn't thought that she had been the fastest, or even the second fastest. It probably ran in their blood to be excellent hill-rollers. That's why she had done so well.
"Whoops!" Eusi trotted quickly after Waka and nudged her up again. "You're just not supposed to go faster down the hill, though." The ever-watchful mother nudged her daughter in the other direction, taking it slow this time, and up the hill to take another tumble down.
"Alright, let's try it again!"

"Yay!" Kidege chirped, bounding up the hill as quickly as her light feet could take her. She found it more difficult to fly through her jumps when she was going up, and didn't like the way the earth seemed to be pulling her back down. One day she would figure out how to make it easier, like it was when she was jumping down a hill.
Padding up to the top, out of breath, she sat down and took a moment to center herself, tongue hanging out of her mouth as she looked down at her mom, sister, and their new aunt.
Laika watched the puppies in wonder, not knowing which one to follow first. She leaped after Kidege first, getting half way up the hill before she turned around and saw Waka rolling again. She flew back down, skidding to a stop near Eusi, panting excitedly and wagging her tail.
"We're rolling again!" She said, though that fact seemed to already be excited, so it wasn't clear why she was broadcasting it. She bounded away again, up the hill to meet Kidege. The two sat next to each other, sharing the same winded, but excited expression and stance. One was a puppy, whose enthusiasm was excused by her age and the novelty of this new game. The other was a puppy at heart, no matter how much her body grew or time moved on.
Laika looked down at Eusi, barking, "I'm pretty sure these two are the best hill rolling puppies I've ever seen!"

Eusi laughed and gave Kidege an affectionate lick on the ear from where she lay nearby the two younger girls. She watched Laika run around just like her daughters did.
"I know!" she told her sister. "It must be in our blood to be good at hill-rolling. It's just one of those instinctive things we're just good at," she added.
Waka nodded eagerly at her new aunt and happily situated herself near the other three so she had a good spot on which to roll down in a minute. This time would be even more fun than the last!
The little wild dog crawled closer and closer to the edge, under the careful eye of her mother, getting ready for take off with every passing second. But suddenly, she didn't realize that she had gone too far, and accidentally tumbled down sooner than she had planned. Her mouth opened wide in a silent shriek and her eyes filled with fright, Waka couldn't stop herself as she continued to tumble down on top of herself as she neared the middle of the hill.
Eusi had been watching her mute daughter edge closer and closer to the edge and was about to tell her to stop with a warning word, but then she took a tumble down.
"Waka!" she called, throwing herself down after the little starry pup and running downhill to save her.

"No, Waka!" Kidege barked, with some minor annoyance in her voice as the other pup started to roll down the hill. For a moment she didn't realize it hadn't been on purpose, though her mom's reaction cleared that up.
"Oh!" She yelped, staying put and yelling fairly useless things because her little legs would never catch up to them, "don't get hurt!"
Laika had never really experienced a maternal instinct before, as far as she knew. Even as she felt her heart flutter and her body shift gears, she didn't know that was why. The preservation of a puppy's well being, after all, could stem from anywhere, right? She did not turn a thought to it, a bit too pre-occupied by the puppy rolling down the hill.
With a bark and leap she followed after Eusi and Waka, letting her energetic and activity filled lifestyle show off its perks. She was fast, and caught up to the puppy with relative ease, though she would have to catch her breath from the fright and the chase once she was sure everything was okay.
She ducked simply plopped herself in Waka's path, letting the puppy roll right into her, since she hadn't gathered so much momentum that the bump would cause either of them harm. The pink wild dog looked down at Waka, then up at Eusi.
"She's even good at rolling by accident!"
Kidege barked and ran down to meet them, though she ended up moving a bit faster than she wanted to because of the slope, and then couldn't stop. She bumped into her moms legs, peering around them to see if her sister was okay.

Eusi gave a relieved bark of laughter and slowed her frantic pace down to a trot as she soon reached her sister and offspring. That had been close. Too close.
And then she felt another bump, and glanced down rather quickly to see her other daughter roll down into her legs, and she gave another sigh. The wild dog licked Kidege and nudged her up again to help.
Waka had had absolutely no clue what was going on; just that the world around her had been going faster and faster and suddenly it had stopped. She felt something soft beside her and looked towards it, suddenly seeing two..no, three Aunt Laikas. The pup blinked and shook her head, slowly grinning at her family members around them.
She gave a silent giggle and stuck her tongue out at her mother playfully.
Eusi nipped her daughter right back and shook her head. "You had me worried for a second! But yes, it does seem that you happen to be an excellent roller. Even by accident." She ruffled Waka's head with her paw.
"But I think it's about time to return home, girls. Your father and siblings couldn't have gotten into much trouble while we were gone, but they probably did."

Laika looked up, sad that they were going to be heading home, but knowing she should head back to her own den, too. And they would see each other again, no doubt! So whatever 'sadness' she had felt was quickly gone, as it often was.
Sadness just had no chance with her.
"We'll play again soon!" She said with confidence, looking down at the pups and then back up at Eusi for confirmation.
Kidege wasn't too upset about having to go home. She wanted to show her siblings what they had learned! And make sure she stayed the best at it. Though, Waka was good so maybe she could share the title. Either way, they were the 'masters' and they could teach the others all about and be cool.
"Okay mama!" She said, bouncing around her legs and then bounding up to Laika. She looked shy for a moment, then nuzzled her leg before bounding back to Eusi and hiding behind her front paws.
"Bye!" she chirpped from her cover.

The mother nuzzled her sister with affection. "Of course we'll see you soon. I expect that you'll be wanting to meet the whole family, and I don't blame you. We could use an extra paw in helping out, if you'd like to visit sometime." The offer came from the heart, for while Eusi would love to see her sister some more--especially now that she was grown up--it was true that having such a big litter made it difficult for the two parents to keep their eyes on them all at once.
Her mute daughter, however, was unafraid of cozying up to Laika. She loved her new aunt! She was so much fun and taught them such a neat trick to share with her siblings. Waka would help Kidege teach them, and they would have lots of fun!
With one last lick to Laika, she skipped back over to her mother and sister. Until next time! she thought.
Eusi licked her two girls and smiled at her sister. "See you soon!" And they turned around and headed back home.
She was not looking forward to seeing the mess that her mate and the rest of her pups had made. That was for sure.
