Fish grinned wickedly at his friend. "Oh," he said enthusiastically, "It was the best."
He thought better of this for a moment. "Of course, I mean, I'm sure real school here's gonna be more awesome," he added. After all, Crowley was here for real school. Things were better already.
"I'm glad you're here," he said after a while. "This is gonna be so cool!"
He started back down the hall and motioned for Crowley to follow. "We should probably get back to Dad's classroom, huh?"

Crowley still felt a little bad about missing, like, all of preschool. It sounded like it would have been fun, though from Fish's assurances it probably would be a lot more fun to be in classes where you could doodle on notes or something and not walls. (He had a feeling that he would spend much of his time doodling the various implements of sports, and trying to get out of doing any real drawing.)
"Duh," said Crowley, pretending to have an ego. "I'm here. It's got to be awesome."
Then he followed Fish down the hall. "Your dad probably knows where our classroom is," he said thoughtfully. "Probably."

"Bet he does," nodded Fish in agreement. He was still at the point where he thought his dad knew just about everything there was to know, so this statement came easily. He grinned mischievously at his friend.
"Hey, race you there?" he suggested. The halls were empty enough this time of morning for them to run.

"Sure," said Crowley, grinning. It was pretty much a straight shot to Fish's dad's office (Mr. Prosper?) so he figured he knew the way well enough already. Beating Fish back there would be like taking candy from a small child, or perhaps one of his mother's assistants. Or a Cogitor. Something helpless, anyway. Crowley made a show of stretching as they walked. "It's not fair though, 'cause I'll win."
He looked at Fish for a minute, then shouted, "Ready GO," and with that he started running- arms pumping to make the most of motion, instinct taking over so he would breathe correctly, in through the nose and out through the mouth. He loved running- he felt powerful, unstoppable, like he could plow through walls and keep going into the horizon, over the sea out into space. Probably he couldn't bust through these walls, though, so he turned into Prosper's office and stopped, hands on his knees and a good bit winded. But he had won, though, and that was what was important.

A few seconds later - a noticeable gap, though nothing embarrassing - Fish skidded into the room behind Crowley and doubled over trying to catch his breath. Rather than in through the nose and out through the mouth, he seemed to be doing in through the nose and out through the gills, and it sounded weird.
"Okay, okay," he panted. "You win."
He straightened up and looked hopefully at his father.
"You know where our classroom is, right, Dad?" he asked. Prosper nodded. Fish looked to Crowley.
"Told you so," he said.

"Told you I'd win," said Crowley smugly, straightening up to look down his nose at his friend in pretend arrogance. Of course he would win, he spent all his time running! Running was his thing, next to soccer and lacrosse and baseball and okay, most sports in the entire world. He just liked the freedom, right? Right!
The noise from Fish's gills was kind of annoying but worrisome and also sort of cool, if Crowley thought about it, which he did. "Dude," he said, "Are you okay?" And then he noticed Prosper, having apparently run right in and totally not cared about who was actually in there. "You're s'posed to breathe a certain way, you know-"
Ignoring Fish's told-you-so, he glanced back to the teacher, and to the clock, and then he said, "Could you show us, Mr. Prosper?"

Prosper also consulted the clock - he had a class first block. But it was his parental duty to escort Fish and Crowley on their first day of school. He nodded. "Sure," he told the boys. He put away the set of paintbrushes he was sorting and motioned for them to follow him.
Fish grinned at Crowley and fell into step behind his father. School was going to be awesome if they were together to cause trouble!
