I've got an idea. Kind of silly. Well, Lemony repeatedly states that Count Olaf is clever. If he's so clever, why doesn't he hook a way to get on "Who wants to be a Millionare?" xd Just imagine! Anyway, as you said the whole "orphan-chase" thing is way better for the books.

Probably because Olaf isn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed.. (a phrase which here means he might be good at scheming, but when it comes to knowing how far away the sun is from the Earth, he wouldn't get too far. Besides, who would he call for 'phone a friend'? )

As Mr. MooCow said, he could phone pretty much anyone! Even his brother and sister (I have this theory that the man and woman in book ten are related to him. All the evidence points to it.)

What about his
son
?

When did he have a son? And i'm not bothering with spoilers beause I doubt it. Where is it shown damnit!

In the autobiography there's a section where all the villian's names are underlined, and it underlines an evil count with one son.

...That is actually a good question. Maybe he just likes burning houses down...or maybe he'll get even more money from the orphans than the bank? eek

He could burn down the bank though. But yeah he might get more money from the orphans. It just seems like robbing the bank would be easier.

Would it be possable to gain much monitary compensation for burning down ANY federal building? Purhaps one may, provided that they have been contracted for such.

Or Count Olaf could be the son referred to? And the evil count was his father? Since titles like 'count' tend to be hereditary. xD

That's possible, I never thought of that.. Since it never talked about Olaf's father being in VFD, I just kind assumed it was him. 3nodding

Count Olaf just might of wanted revenge or to make the books sound better. Or maybe he wanted to go down in history. xd

I have wondered that myself. Count Olaf likes to make people miserable. By chasing rich orphans, he can make them miserable, burn things down, and get rich all at once. Plus, he is quite the ham. Chasing orphans would make a better play then robbing a bank don't you think?

The prime requirement for being a villain is being illogical and stuck-up enough to stick to the plan, no matter how difficult that may be.

Look at Jessie and James from pokemon. Six years and they're still after that Pikachu.... xd

See, I have two ideas when it comes to that.

1) Count Olaf could have given himself the title "Count" just so he'd sound more important. It could just be another guise he's under.

2) It is frequently mentioned that Olaf does not bathe often, and he drinks constantly, and it is noted that he is not pleasant to look at. Overall, he is fetid and repulsive, and has no personality traits which would make these severe flaws insignificant. Esme also, more than likely, does not want to ever have children, seeing as the "pregnant woman" look has never really been "in". Who would really want to perform the act of having a son with him?

Instead of Count Olaf going through all the trouble of hunting down the Baudalair(gah! need to find spelling!) orpahns why doesn't he just rob the bank?

"The Rather Rude Man Who Took From the Tender Depository" would not be a title given to a book I would read.
