Her host will be here any minute." Keiko Mitsu A young woman approached quietly, hands clasped behind her back. She's small, and pale, with cropped dark hair. "Hello." She says calmly. DivineSaturn Oh, another young lady approaching. Lionel can't help but nod his head charmingly, tipping the hat yet again, with a soft "Good day, miss." Oh, he's good.
Is the lion man coming or not? stare
Or not. "Coming, coming..." Talk about no rest for the weary.
Lillian Haladet Lillian seems only slightly surprised. "Right on time, I see, miss... Keiko, was it?" Keiko Mitsu She smiles, nodding. "Yes, Lady Haladet. I'm Keiko Mitsu." "Good day," a short bow and a smile to the gentleman who was leaving. Now he was polite. Lillian Haladet "Mitsu. Yes." Lillian seems a little more frazzled now. "Yes," she mumbles into the walkie-talkie. "Yes, send her in."
"I'm glad to see you were prompt," she finally mutters. Keiko Mitsu "Yes." She nods, "I like to be punctual, and I'm very excited to be having Kris staying with me." Lillian Haladet "Kris...?"
Lillian can't help but smile a little at that. "Yes, I'm sure Krisamine is looking forward to meeting y--"The doors swing open again, and this time, one of the guards escorting the child out is carrying a massive pile of luggage that no mortal could possibly carry. "Thank you, sir," Krisamine chirps, smiling sweetly at him before daintily making her way to Keiko and Lillian. "Good evening, Miss Haladet. Is this my host?" Keiko Mitsu Keiko smiles seeing the child, although slightly startled by the luggage. "I am indeed your host," she says, giving Krisamine a bow. Manners, manners. "I'm Keiko Mitsu." The child gives her a cute grin, playing with the hem of her skirt. "Hello, Miss Keiko. I'm Krisamine," she says, and pauses, "Or Kris, for short."Lillian Haladet "I'm sure you two will get along nicely," Lillian offers helpfully before turning back to the walkie-talkie. "That's good for now. Go ahead and go on break; I'll be returning shortly." Keiko Mitsu "Thank you, Lady Haladet," Keiko says, never lapsing on the fomality. "Kris, would you like to head home now?" "I think that would be nice. I'm very interested in exploring Gaia.""Excellent." Now, how to deal with the luggage. Oh well, when in doubt, a pinch of magick always helps. Lillian Haladet Lillian raises an eyebrow at this, but says nothing.
Instead, she strides toward the gate, whispering quietly to one of the guards in front of it.
After a moment, she turns back to Keiko. "If you have any questions or problems from here, do not hesitate to return to the embassy. If I'm not present, ask for a Vilden Keth. He will be more than happy to assist you." Keiko Mitsu Keiko looks a little surprised by the comment, but replies, confidingly. "I'm not expecting any trouble, but thank you for informing me. It's always good to know that help is somewhere." Lillian Haladet "His sister lives on Gaia; he will likely introduce you if you run into him." She nods. "However, I must get going. I apologize."

Responding to the letter from home Dear Mother,
Thank you for your kind letter. You know I'll behave, I can't wait to learn about Gaia and it's people. My host parent, whose name is Keiko Mitsu, seems very kind. She fosters and cares for several other children here, whom I will tell you about later. Gaia is so diverse! When Keiko was bringing me home from the recieving area, we saw two elves, a kitsune person (he had feline ears and a tail), and a lady with bat-ears coming out of her head! They were all very nice though, said a polite 'Hello,' or 'Good morning.'
I was thinking a lot about how most Gaians don't have our specific abilities--I don't want to pretend I don't have them, but I will try my best to be kind to them. Speaking of our abilities, there are three other Neilani children here! One is a girl named Melete, I saw her briefly, and she looked rather irritated. The other two are boys, Patrick and Iolle. I'm very much looking forward to meeting Iolle, Keiko told me he has such high abilities, it is expected he will become a telepath!
Send my love to Father as well--how did the dinner go?
Love, Krisamine

Entry No.: 002 Date: Sunday, January 23, 2005 User: Keiko Password: ******** Quote: As I lift this pen and etch these words, a journey begins. Krisamine Iolen, daughter of a prominent Neilani family, is participating in an exchange program, and I am her host. Kris--as her nickname is--has high mental abilities, and no doubt is able to empathize with my emotions. I am very happy to be hosting her, but I'm wondering somewhat if I am the best possible guardian for her. I, like she, grew up on a foriegn planet, when manners and ettiquete were hugely important. To be blunt, I'm a little old fashioned, and when angry, I become more detatched than annoyed. Kris has a very bright spirit, and I don't want to dampen that. I do hope that I can teach her to think differently of people not endowed with her abilities. The issue I mentioned above doesn't concern me that much, it was just something on my mind. Kris seems to be settling in very well, she made fast friends with Nell (a fallen angel Banir Kinder) and Aida (a Konokai child). We set up a room for Kris upstairs, in between Syrona's and Nell's, with mine across the hall. We left it simple so she can customize it to her will, but I think it was quite nice. The walls are a golden-beige, and Aida and her sister Kieta took dark blue paint to sketch runes of welcome, love, and protection, as well as some others they neglected to name, along the wall over her bed. She seems to like it a lot, as well as the computer we set up for her to email home. Well, I have to go make lunch for the girls now, and figure out what Kris's favorite will be. I will write more later, ~Keiko.

Meeting the family
"Ladies! We're home!"
Crash.
Keiko flinched slightly, looking to Kris to explain. "The others are a little wild."
"Others? How many others."
"You'll see." Keiko remarked, sounding a little pleased. Down the stairs, three girls crashed down, chasing after each other. One, a blonde-haired pixie girl, seemed eager to crush the other two, also winged little children. One looked like a gothic angel, which pretty much summed her up. The second was white-haired, with warm, smiling eyes.
"Hey, Syrie, give it up, she's here." The dark haired girl said firmly, her black and white striped tiny wings fluttering slightly. She scuffed the toe of her left boot, fingers playing with the shiny zipper on her sweater. "Hi." She told Kris in a somewhat detatched voice. "I'm Acrasia. This is Nell, and Syrie."
"Hey," Syrie smiled at her brightly. "Oh my god, you're so pretty!"
Kris was startled by the sudden appearance of three odd girls. She focused her attention on the one who was complimenting her, doing her best to smile at them all. "Thank you!" She said. "I'm Krisamine Iolen."
"Nice to meet you, Kris." Nell said, "We'll help bring your stuff up to your room. Where is it?"
"I'll take it," Keiko said hastily. "Acrasia, be nice. Girls, why don't you take Kris upstairs and show her around. Answer any of her questions to the best of your ability. Remember, she's not used to Gaia."

Down in the Library
The morning had risen, warm and cheerful, with the sun streaming in through the window in Kris's room. Keiko had helped her finished decorating it, and with a spot of magick, the room was completely renovated.
The walls were a delicate pink, with the runes Aida and Kieta had traced in purple. Golden lamps came out of the wall, and were covered with sheer red scarves. The bed was a four-poster, with a pink, white, and purple drape. The floor was polished mahogany wood, but a rich carpet in blues, reds, and pinks had been pulled across the floor. Kris's many articles of clothing were folded neatly, and stored in a chest of drawers.
But Kris was irritated. None of her host family was native to Gaia, and no one seemed to be able to answer her questions. She hadn't spoken to Keiko thoroughly on the subject, she had gone off for a two day trip, with her cousin Kern visiting and in charge. Kern was studying upstairs, and had requested not to be bothered if possible. Keiko was due home in an hour. Kris had spend a while searching the computer for any information about Gaia, and gave up after an hour and a half. So she spent the morning wandering around the house. She asked Acrasia where she could find any information, and the stupid girl just shrugged. She would have to educate Acrasia later. With the ignorant one in tow, Krisamine headed down to the library.
"Acrasia," she said, exasperated, "I want to learn about Gaia. What do you know?"
Acrasia met her gaze levelly, unintimidated by the mental power that tinted Kris's words. "I'm from Heaven." she told the girl calmly. "Keiko is from Ithieral. Gaia is about that. It is diversity. People from every realm, country, planet, race, and religious live here. It's our home." She led Kris, who was no longer looking annoyed, to a shelf. "This side is Gaia," she told her, "and this, Ithieral. You'll learn a lot reading it. Or simply..."
Acrasia picked out one of the books, and touched her index and middle finger of her right hand to it. A silvery line of smoke drifted out of it, and into Kris' mind. Words flowed through, and she gaped at Acrasia in shock. "It's just the main idea," Acrasia said, shrugging, but looking pleased. "In my words. Read on, Lady Krisamine."
She paused for a while, "And if I may note," her tone turned cold. "This house has more magick in it than you can imagine. Don't think you're better than us, or we than you. Everyone here is equal."

The Gift
It was lunchtime, and for once, the entire family was assembled together at the kitchen table. Keiko sat at the head, with Nalelle on her left, Aida and Kieta chattering quietly next to her, with Syrona next to Kieta. Acrasia sat on Keiko's right, with Willow next to her, then Kris, and Nell at the end. Revane and Khaldun were seated on the floor, staring intently at the food, waiting for a piece to fall. Maiyme, the maydel, was seated on a shelf next to the table, watching them all with amusement.
Keiko had been cooking for a while, knowing that everyone intended on coming to lunch. She had decided that Kris needed a family-style lunch with everyone there. There was sandwiches, plates of carefully set up fruits and vegetables, a large bowl of fried rice, and strangely enough, apple sauce. Syrona had insisted.
Kris and Nell were talking about Kris. How did she like Gaia? How was it different from Neilan? What was Neilan like? What about their telekinetic abilities? She kept Kris talking for a long time, but cut her off after a while. "Sorry," she said, and listened intently.
"Guys, quiet, I'm trying to listen."
No one heeded her.
"GUYS!"
Keiko heard her trying to silence the table, and leaned foreward, extinguishing the candles that were providing light in the darkened room with a soft breath. Silence reverberated throughout the room. Keiko carefully relit the candles, and gestured to Nell. The front door bell was ringing.
Nell launched herself out of her seat before any of the others could beat her to the door. Kris looked at Keiko puzzled, and she just shrugged. They waited for sound. Nell was murmuring to someone, and there was a crinkly noise, like plastic paper. The door closed, and Nell yelled, "OI! Kris has an admirer!"
She ran into the room, carrying a beatuiful boquet of pink and yellow roses, wrapped in the crinkly paper, with the ends held in a damp towel. A note attached to one of them read, "From: L.K."
"Who's L.K?"
"I dunno." There were mutters of agreement from the others. Keiko stood up. "Let's put these in water, and they can go in your room, Kris." She said, going to fill a vase with water.
"Oi, you all. Keep eating. I worked hard on those sandwiches!"

Von Helson vs. Gambinos.
"Some ball that was," Keiko muttered during breakfast as she served herself a piece of toast with marmalade. "Kidnapping, and all that jazz. Worthy of the junk that happened at home during the Decadal War."
"What happened?" Kris asked, taking a slice of toast for herself, and taking a bite. She made a noise like a half hiccup, and placed it down on her plate, staring at it as though the toast had bitten her, not the opposite. Acrasia sniggered.
"The Von Helsons threw a huge party, extremely fancy and dressy, with everyone drinking crystal flutes of wine and giving out all this junky stuff, pretty gold brooches and hats and balloons. I have a hat and ballon upstairs, and a brooch too, but I think I'm going to burn that."
"Why burn a pretty gold brooch?" Kris asked startled. "I'd take it and send it home as a souvenier for my family if you don't want it."
"Help youself," Keiko offered. "I'll give it to you later. Anyway, Lord--Mister, I guess--Mr. Gambino was there as well, with his son Gino, and supposedly he crashed the party. There was a huge scandal as though the Von Helsons were impersonators, and the True Heir was trying to vanquish them or something, so they kidnapped Gino to get the True Heir and Mr. G to leave them alone. Finally they returned him, but hey, I'm happy I managed to get out of there without being zombiefied." She exchanged a glace with Acrasia and Nell. "That was Halloween. Krisamine, love, never go to a party hosted by someone important from Gaia unless you're extremely careful."
"I'll keep that in mind." Kris said firmly. "But who are the Von Helsons and the Gambinos?"
"They're the most powerful people on Gaia." Nell cut in suddenly, and got up, rummaging in the mail basket for a magazine, which she handed to Kris. "There're the Von Helsons."
"They're beautiful!" Kris said, surprised. "Why would they do something like that?"
"Good lord. They're hideous." Acrasia said in a hoarse voice. She hadn't spoken all day.
"No they aren't!"
"I'm not going to argue over something that stupid." Acrasia told her smoothly. "Think what you like, but I have work to do."
"Her immaturity astonishes me on occasions." Syrona said crisply. "Bye Keik, I'm going out."
"Girls. Be nice to each other. Please?"

Keiko told me about the Ball, which sounded lovely, and I wish I'd gone. I wonder why she didn't take us? It sounded very grand, and quite a nice ball, not trashy and boring, like that stupid dinner Mother made me go to a week before I came here. That was ridiculous, just a large crowd sitting there, and eating, and the food wasn't that good. There was ballroom dancing later, but Mother refused to participate. THIS Ball seemed lovely. They told me about the Von Helsons later, and I cannot believe what they said. "They kidnapped that poor little boy and held him until his father promised to never return!" They're the most beautiful, powerful ladies on Gaia! Why would they need to do that? Nell gave me a magazine with pictures of them in it, and I put the picture up in my room. Keiko gave me the pieces of the brooch she got, but I'm not going to wear it for a while, since she was so upset with the events of the ball. After breakfast, she wrote their names on paper and burnt it. Nothing else much has happened, except tomorrow, Keiko's cousin Lora and her friend Kern are coming to Gaia. Lora's bringing her kids, I guess they're boys, Devon and Jason, Keiko said their names are. Acrasia just laughed a me when I said that. She said they were girls! What kind of person would name their daughters Devon and Jason? Oh, she just told me it's Jayscon. But really. These Gaians are so strange. I don't know what to think of this place. But someone sent me flowers! They're so pretty, I put them in my room. At least something that makes sense is going on here. But I don't know who L.K. is. Conversing Through the Ceiling
Sounds resonated from the ceiling, startling Kris as she read a book from Keiko's library, seated on her bed. She looked up, noticing for the first time, a steel square. It twitched slightly, and Kris lurched back, about to scream, when it was pulled through the ceiling, and a handpoked through.
It was a remarkably pale hand, with crescent shaped nails that were fairly long and cared for remotely. The wrist it was attached to (and the arm, Kris supposed) was marred with deep disfiguring scars, as though someone had brutally tried to cut something out of the wrist.
She shrieked, and the hand withdrew quickly. "H-h-hello?" She stuttered, staring up.
"Hi." A voice whispered. It was melodious and husky, but worn and tired.
"Who are you?" Kris demanded, standing up, and peering through the hole in the ceiling. The voice snickered quietly, coughing hoarsely, and she could almost imagine it smiling.
"I'm..." There was silence. "My name is of no importance."
"What are you doing up there?"
"Resting. Hiding. Recuperating. Studying. Numerous things. Your name is Kris, correct?"
"How do you know?" Kris was starting to feel paranoid.
"I hear you talking to Milady Kireaona."
"Kireaona?"
"Ah, Miz Keiko."
"Does Keiko know you're there?"
"Probably."
"And you don't want to come down?"
"Not especially."
"Can I tell the others about you?"
"I'd rather your didn't."
"Okay."
"I will see you soon, Kris. Goodbye."
And there was the soft rustling sound of a slight figure moving away, and the steel plate fell back into place.
((A/N: Don't be concerned about Kris's new friend in the attic. She's perfectly safe. On Gaia, anyway.))

Secretive Sleuthing, Part One
"Hey, Keiko?" Kris asked, walking into the library. Strangely, she wasn't dressed in her usual pink emsemble, but in a practical pair of pants and a t-shirt, (albiet one with a complex, beautiful design) and had her delicate golden-blonde hair pulled back.
"Hello, Kris." Keiko smiled at her, from up on a ladder, filling books. They were piled in a neat, precarious stack on the platform next to her, and appeared to be history textbooks. Keiko placed a few more, and climbed down carefully. "What's up?"
"Can I ask you a question?"
"Certainly." Keiko said, taking a seat by the window, and gesturing for Kris to do the same.
"What's above my room?"
Keiko looked as though she was certain she had misheard her. "Your room, you ask?" She looked as though she was thinking hard.
"Yes."
Keiko got up, and walked over to the Maps section and pulled a brass tube out from its holder. She uncorked it, and pulled out a few sheets of paper. "These are the blueprints of the house." She explained. "Lesse, your room," her fingers found it, and Kris was startled to see that it was one of the largest rooms.
Keiko flipped to the next sheet of paper, and nodded. "Thought so. You're right underneath Section B of the attic." She elaborated. "It's a space between the roof and the top floor about five feet high, six in some places, which we use for storage, mostly. Awful to be up there, it's damp and musty, and the ceiling is very low. " She gave Kris a piercing glance. "Why?"
"No reason. I was curious. There's a steel plate on the ceiling of my room, and I was wondering what was behind it." Kris lied. Best to keep her mysterious friend's existance a secret.
"Ah. Has there been any noise from behind it?"
Keiko knew.
"Not that I'm aware of."
"I see."

Secretive Sleuthing, Part Two.
Kris headed straight from the library to the kitchen, where she sat down to think. Aida and Kieta wandered in while she was contemplating a course of action, and raided the refridgerator, giving her an idea. Food. Kris leapt up, and went to the cabinet above the counter near the sink, and pulled out two boxes of cookies, and a bottle of room-temperature liquid Keiko liked to drink at night. (Non-alcoholic, she had promised.)
"What are you doing?" Aida asked, amused, as Kris stowed the cookies and tea-like substance in a plastic bag, and tied it shut.
"Keep a secret?" Kris asked, setting the bag down, as the two joined her at the table. Aida nodded. "Yeah. What's up?" Kris steepled her fingers, and said softly, "There's someone upstairs, living in the attic. I want to find them, and get them to come out."
Aida and Kieta exchanged glances. "That's not so strange, you know. Mom has people visiting here all the time. She's involved in politics on her homeworld."
"Living in the attic?"
"Questionable taste, to be sure, but no one's perfect." Aida said with a shrug, playing with the ring attached to the end of her braid. "I don't know." Kieta said finally, interlocking her fingers and setting her hands down on the tabletop. "Maybe Krisamine is right, and someone's up there who shouldn't be."
"We can look." Aida said. "If it'll make you more comfortable."
Cookie and tea-substance bag in hand, the trio trotted out of the kitchen and up the main stairwell, going up to the second and final floor. Directly above the landing, there was a rectangle on the ceiling, about six inches wide and two feet long, with a short rope tie attached to the center of it.
Aida put her hands on her hips, and looked up at it. "I'd say that's the entrance. Up you go, Lady Krisamine," she wisecracked, as she and Kieta locked hands to give Kris a leg up.
I'm crazy. What would mother say?Kris thought miserably, as she set her hands on their shoulders and climbed up onto the hand-stirrup. With an unexpected burst of strength, Aida and Kieta lifted her a foot or so up, so her flailing hand caught onto the tie and yanked it out of the ceiling, sending them all ungracefully to the floor.
Kris dusted herself off, glaring indignantly at Aida, who was pink in the face from holding back laughter. "You make me laugh." Aida said with a smile, setting her hand on the edge of the ladder that had descended from the ripped out rectangle. "After you, Lady Krisamine."
They climbed the stairs, Kris leading, with Aida behind her and Kieta following. Their shortness allowed them to stand up straight, but they were unprepared for the darkness, as the ladder came up softly behind them, snapping shut. "Hello?" Kris called, her voice echoing.
Something moved suddenly, a few feet away from them, and Kieta paled, Kris emitting a soft shriek. Light appeared very suddenly, from a small candle shining with golden fire. The warm light reflected on the face of a young woman, who smiled at them tiredly and raised a hand in greeting. "Hi. I expected you'd come up here soon, Krisamine. But I wasn't expecting your company." Her voice was low and husky, and her eyes dull, with bags underneath from tiredness.
"Hi." Kris said. Suddenly her bravery thawed a little. What was she supposed to say? They had found her mysterious friend, but now what?
As if she sensed her indecision, the woman nodded. "Come back later when you have gathered your thoughts, Kris. Keiko knows I'm here, and she's fine with it. I'll be down in a few days."
"What is your name?" Aida asked suddenly.
The light flared again, and the ladder opened for them. The woman sighed, and gestured for them to go. "I'm Eavan, Lady."

Discussions, Contemplation, and Weirdness
A lot had happened since Eavan had been found upstairs in the attic. Keiko had disappeared for several days, leaving Eavan and Nalelle in charge, and had returned looking remarkably different. Her skin was a pale grayish-white, and her hair had turned dark brown, separating itself into neat near-dreadlocks. And Kris had grown up.
She was a teenager now, and as Keiko called her gently, "a young woman," before Kris had asked her to "kindly shut up." Keiko and Kris were sitting together in the library, talking quietly. Keiko stood up, and took a large stack of books over to organize on the shelves, as Kris launched into a short monologue.
"I don't know what to do, Keik. Miss Haladet asked me what I'd like to do, now that I've completed my study, and I don't know. I'm quite sure my options are to enlist in the military, go home, or stay here, and I don't know what I want to do. I really don't think I'm cut out for the military, and I like it here, but I miss my parents, so--"
"Well, from what I understand, your parents aren't very good at responding to letters." Keiko interrupted quietly, reaching up to place a book on the shelf. "I think you should do what you feel is right, whether or not that's what you most want to do. But it sounds like you want to go home."
"But I'd miss everyone here."
"And it's a lot easier for us to arrange to visit than it is for your parents. Kris, believe me I'd love for you to stay, but I want you to do what will make you happiest in the end."
"I still don't know." Kris said, biting her lip.
Keiko shrugged. "Then write to your parents, or talk to the other Neilani students. And think. Take back everything I've said. I don't want to prejudice your opinion."

It was really early in the morning, and Kris was angry with herself for being unable to sleep. Yes, the night before, random intruders had entered the house, but Kirea--as Keiko was now going as--had sent them away, and Eavan had left, but she had barely been involved in that. Kris was more concerned about what to do.
"I wont be able to procrastinate deciding much longer." She muttered, scowling, and holding the headpiece that she'd first arrived on Gaia wearing.
Her talk with Lillan hadn't helped much, but Kris had adjusted now to being a teen, and figured, why not? She'd go talk to Lillan. A glance at the clock corrected her. No, not at four in the morning. So she'd write to her parents. Yeees.
Dear Mother and Father, I've grown a lot since I last saw you, and Commander Haladet has informed me that I'm ready to decide what to do with my life, what occupations to consider, and what choices to make. I was thinking I'd like to come home, maybe work in politics with Father, but I don't know if I want anything that stressful.
Commander Haladet recommended joining the military, and I don't know about that either. I don't think I'm cut out to serve, whether or not I want to.
So I was wondering if you'd offer me some advice.
Your loving daughter, Krisamine.

Eavan left too, and sent Keiko--sorry, Kirea, another long story--a letter today, which upset Kirea a bit. Good news is she might take us to her family reunion, she said. I really need to talk to Commander Haladet, or at least to some of the other Neilani students. Melete left a long time ago, and I just don't know what to do. I kind of want to go into politics, but Commander Haladet thinks the military is a good idea. First I thought the military was a great idea, then a bad one, and now I don't know. Kirea was in the army and she liked it--not the Neilani army, obviously, but anyway. There will supposedly be a lot of officers at the family reunion. I guess all militaries have to be somewhat similar? And what about politics. My parents are never able to write to me, and do I want to be that way to family when I have kids? I hate dilemmas. ~~Krisamine.
