"What!? They're already trying to replace me? Well, you can tell them that they can find another room, because that cot is taken." Muttering under his breath, S'van fussed a little, irritated and irrationally jealous. He had only just moved out of the Candidate barracks, after all. "Ehh... don't blame you for being tired. It was a long night." At least, it had been a long night for him. Maybe Okassis had somehow escaped that particular doom, but he certainly had not. "It's bad enough that every other Candidate has lice, worse that there are so many Candidates."

"That's what I tell them. Then they feed me a long story about how they're trapped in a room made for two with three other guys, and start begging. Then I tell them you had lice and nobody's cleaned your sheets, and they reconsidered." Okassis smiled, albeit a ghostly one. "'Cept one guy. He decided he'd take anything he could get. That one, I booted out on his rump. Bet I'll be hearing about it later, too." Exaggerating? Probably. But at least that was Okassis being Okassis.

"So what're your duties now? Taking care of your Galliath, is that all?"

"Good, good! Keep it up." None of them deserved his bed, after all. For good or for bad. "Begging? How ridiculous of them. They can handle cramped quarters if I can." After all, S'van shared space with Galliath, who took up much more room than another lad or two would. "So far. I miss my kitchen duties, and I'm sure you do, too." All of the free food, any time Okassis wanted it? Yes, Okassis was definitely missing S'van duties, of that he was certain. "They haven't told me what my duties are just yet. Soon, maybe."

"So they just have you sitting around, twiddling your thumbs?" Okassis's voice was in no small part disparaging - S'van would certainly know his opinion about that brand of sloth. Men were meant to work, not sit and wait!

An idea seemed to strike him. "Hey. I'm playing hooky today," he revealed suddenly. "Got a tip about some numbweed growing a couple miles off. Thought I'd hike there today, get some for our lice cure. Why don't you come with? Think Gall is good for a walk like that?"

With a pang in his chest, S'van wondered if there was ever going to be a time when he could just take off now. ... Maybe when Galliath was grown. "I can't leave the weyr right now," he said, already feeling terribly guilty. He never, never said no to Okassis' schemes. What would his friend think of him now? The thing of it was, S'van wasn't sure that something that they met along the way wouldn't startle Galliath into flying between. As spirited as Gall was, he was still a baby, and babies did tend to get scared or distracted easily. Had Okassis asked him if he wanted to steal some numbweed from the stores he would have said yes automatically, but he hadn't.

"... What? Really?" Okassis answered, taken aback. Sovann had never balked from heading out on an adventure with him!... S'van, on the other hand, apparently did. What, was he scared they'd take away his dragon if he were a bad boy?

A scowl grew over his face. "Oh c'mon! It's not like we're really doing anything wrong. It's a public service! Look at all these poor itchy saps - we're going to rescue them!"

"I know, and I want to." Okassis was scowling at him. Okassis hardly ever scowled at him. Unhappily, S'van sipped his now tepid klah. "I just... don't think that it's a good idea right now, is all." Why it was not a good idea, he didn't mention. It should have occurred to him to mention it, but it didn't. He was a little tied up in the way his friend was looking at him. More, he didn't want to stay in the Weyr! Not forever, at least. He didn't mind being around most of the time, but he was going to miss those adventures until Galliath was trained up enough to not lose himself between. The trouble was, with the way Kas was acting, he wasn't sure there would be adventures to go on by that point!

Again, Okassis seemed stunned. Did he really- was S'van really - it had only been a fardling day, why--

"... Right-o, then," Okassis answered, jaw set. Standing from the table and hopping free of the bench, the trader had apparently decided that he didn't need breakfast as badly as he'd thought he would. "I'd better start hoofing, then. Have fun with the other Weyrlings, S'van."

Well. There was the response he'd been fearing, all right. Keeping his face as blank as he could to hide the sheer misery that such a brush off gave him, S'van nodded stiffly. For the moment, he couldn't really come up with something to say, and when he finally did, it was too late. "... B-but Okassis, it's... it's..."

"... It's only because I'm afraid he'll go between," he said to empty air, for Okassis was already gone.
