She hadn't noticed the other mare stopped, and ran right by her. She made a wide turn and went back to where she stood, and replied, "Enough? I've only gotten started," she said, smiling big. She felt rejuvinated, like a young filly again. The lightning charging the air charged something within her, making her feel more alive, and full of the urge to burn off the energy coursing through her.
She looked around and noticed some rock formations not too far from them, but far enough that the run back to Wesley would be longer. "How about we run to those rocks, and then back to where we started? I don't want to leave him alone too long. He does get scared easily." she said.
The rain had relented a little, and wasn't coming down quite as heavy, making their visibility a little better. The wind hadn't died down nor the intensity of the lightning. White hot streaks lit up the sky, followed soon by the loud crack of thunder.
"So, are you ready?" she asked, her body tingling with the energy in the air, ready to run again.

Echo looked to where Arianna indicated before judging the distance herself. It seemed like a reasonable distance to get there ... and then back to the log where Wesley was hidden. The rain had indeed started to taper off but the danger of the lightning was ever present. It thrilled Echo to be out underneath such a primal force of nature.
Shaking her wet mane to the side Echo grinned suddenly. The element of danger sparking a fierce desire in the mare to just run and let everything go. Nodding in reply to Arianna's questions Echo stamped a hoof on the ground before speaking.
"Let's go."
And with that the dark-colored mare shot forward in an easy loping stride. The rocks loomed ahead as she set her gaze on her target.

Rain was dripping from her eyelashes, and everywhere else on her body and her wings were soaked. Usually in a race she would try to fly, but not this one. One, she thought it might be an unfair advantage, and two, it was harder to fly in rain than normal.
She shook herself to get as much of her hair out of her face as possible, then readied herself next to Echo. At the sound of the other mare's "go," it took her a fraction of a second to realize she had already started, and she took off after her opponent. It didn't take long to catch up, but the earth was proving to be a great opponent as well. The rain had caused the grass and dirt to soften, becoming slippery and more difficult to run on. She worried a bit for their safety, because she wouldn't want her or her new friend to get hurt by falling in the mud.

Echo's hooves pounded against the softening ground. The compactness of the earth losing some of its integrity as a result of the downpour. Letting a laugh erupt from her frame Echo spotted the rocks dead ahead. Changing the speed of her stride the mare cantered effortlessly around the formation before pausing momentarily. Breath caught she loped away from the turnaround point and headed back towards the fallen log where Wesley awaited. Her breath came in short gasps now as she pushed herself to finish first.
(( Short ... but just woke up ... so brain dead ))

Her eyes were stinging from both water and sweat as she neared the rocks. She slowed just a bit so she wouldn't lose traction as she made the tight turn. She noticed Echo slow down just a bit, and took her chance, pushing herself harder, keeping her breath as even as she could.

The mare's stride continued unchecked as she skidded to a stop at the log where Wesley waited. As she arrived a brilliant flash of lightning lit up the night sky and the thunder rumbled ominously. Panting from the exertion of the race she turned around and watched as Arianna came closer to the finish line. Chuckling softly amid herself Echo's sides heaved as she tried to catch her second wind. Racing during a thunderstorm against an Angeni and winning would be a memory to cherish.
Swinging her head around to eye Wesley Echo grinned, "I won right?"
The mare eyed the storm raging on before catching the rest of her breath. It looked as if the storm was still gathering strength. "Arianna, Wesley thank you for the company this night. I must admit that I had a fun time. I think though that the storm is going to get worse before it ends. Perhaps it's time to call it a night?"

She squinted through the rain to see Echo arriving at the log. She slowed down to a walk as she met the two at the finish, catching her breath as she moved.
Wesley peeked out of the log at the dark mare. He chuckled lightly, "Yes, you would be the winner." he said, hopping out of the log now to move over to Arianna. "Can we go home now?" he whispered to her. "I want to get out of the rain, and you should before you get sick."
Arianna smiled sweetly to her little friend, then turned back to Echo. "That was an amazing race, Echo. And I do agree, we should probably move on and find shelter during the storm."
Wesley took that as his cue to climb aboard, using the rings on Arianna's back to climb up. He sat down between the limbs of her wings, and held on to the rings with his paws. "It was nice to meet you, Echo. May our paths cross again someday, but a nicer day than this. Goodbye."
Arianna nodded, and said her own farewell. "You have proven to be a great opponent and friend. I wish you the best in your journeys and that life gives you the best it has to offer. Goodbye Echo, and I too hope our paths cross again someday." With that, she turned and readied herself for another run, this time, her opponent was mother nature itself. She was racing against the storm, with no finish line in sight.
