John tapped his finger against his leg as he stared down the wall of literature. Nothing really jumped out at him, except...

"Ah, here we are."

Grabbing a simple, leather-bound book, John checked its cover, smiled, and took it back to his seat. "It's a transcript of Lanzer's journal. It's interesting, getting to know the people who made this world. They seem so... humble."

Chris nodded. "Yeah, Lanzer. What a leader." He looked over at John. Being a leader was a hard job, but Chris was certain that John would be a fine captain for the clan.

"What do you think? Maybe one of these days, some other clans will have your journal, and they'll go 'that John Rixaen... making the most successful clan in all of Gaia. How'd he do it? Hell, maybe they'll be books ABOUT your book. Wouldn't that be something? Psychoanalyzing you and such." Chris chuckled and patted his friend on the back. "Anyways... I'm sure Lanzer'll make for a good read."User Image

John blushed at so brazen a compliment. "Oh, come now." the swordsman said, hiding his blush behind his book. "You of all people know how simple I am to figure out. If anyone's gonna have a book written about them, it'd be you!"

John's blush faded as his eyes moved, slowly reading the text of Gaia's most illustrious leader.

Chris waved away the compliment. "Maybe, but I doubt it. Hopefully I'll have a few books written before all's said and done, though..."

He tapped John on the shoulder. "Anyways, if you're going to read that, you might wanna sit down back where we were earlier. You could take the out of the library with you, but..." Chris glanced around, looking slightly uneasy. "... I don't know how Ally's doing the checkout stuff or anything. I'll probably be doing most of my Moby Bruce reading in here until it all gets sorted out."User Image

"That's probably a good idea..."

John jumped out of his seat and made a beeline for their original table. Sliding back into the seat, he resumed his place on the page. His eyes slid across the text steadily, learning more about Lanzer and how he ran things...

Chris stared at John blankly for a moment, then quickly started to follow him. "He must really like that book..."

By the time he got to the desk, John was already reading. Guess the pirate footspeed bonus wasn't enough to overcome the combined head start and voracious enthusiasm John possessed. Ah well, it wasn't a race...

Chris pulled up a chair and sat down where he'd been seated earlier. He quietly opened the book and began to read.

Moby Bruce
Call me Ishmael. Some years ago — never mind how long precisely — having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation...

His eyes drank in the words; Chris was hooked. He was beginning a new kind of adventure, one which he silently pursued throughout the old, yellowed pages of Moby Bruce...User Image

"'Kay, so I've still got to label and organize all the maps, then moving on to fictional works...double check on all the Animated chronicles...," Ally muttered to herself as she slowly made her way down the hall to the library. Peanut butter and banana sandwich in one hand and a leather-bound notebook in the other, she glanced over the list of things she'd yet to do for the day. The library was her next stop; she was supposed to have finished all the classing and categorizing of the books, but she fell a bit behind schedule in the last few days. Cleaning and cooking were certainly tasks that consumed most of her time.

Folding her notebook closed with one hand, she stowed it in her trusty messenger bag. In her bag rested all the materials she would need for this particular chore--writing utensils, new books she had picked up, lists upon lists upon lists of every single thing sitting on those shelves. She had a long night ahead of her, so she even packed a couple snacks for herself...just in case. A hundred gold said she'd probably make use of one of the desks for sleeping rather than her own bed. Not by choice, of course.

The raven-haired caretaker reached for the handle of the library door, shoving the last bite of her sandwich in her mouth before entering the haven of knowledge. She blinked a few times, swallowing the gooey remains of her quick meal. Man, peanut butter was sticky! "Oh! H-hello, John, Chris," she greeted when her mouth finally became operable again. She gave a slight bow with her shoulders.

Moby Bruce
Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off — then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can. This is my substitute for pistol and-

Chris was shaken from his reading trance when he heard someone approach and call his name. Slightly startled, he looked up in her direction. "Oh, Ally," He said, setting his book down for a moment. "Hello. I was wonder if I'd be seeing you around these parts..." He tilted his head to one side. "Are you here on business, or for leisure? The two of us were just indulging in some light reading, you see..."User Image

Ally scratched the back of her head, a sheepish grin befalling her face. "M-my apologies for interrupting...I have much work in here t-today, you see." She felt her cheeks grow warmer by the second. Honestly, she did not expect to encounter anyone in here. "P-please, don't mind me! I'll just be...cataloguing..." She hurried past her comrades, claiming an empty table for all her belongings.

John yawned. Lanzer's Journal suddenly was very boring to him. Getting up, he saw Ally and Chris talking, but decided to leave them to their chat. He made his way to where he had found the journal, put it back where it belonged, and grabbed one of the thicker books. It was an encyclopedia of the Animated. Setting it on a table, he swept through most of the pages, headed for the back of the book, which dealt with Animated typically found in the Shallow Seas. Something wasn't sitting right with him.

Chris raised an eyebrow. "Cataloging...?" He scratched his head, confused. "Well, if you say so..." well, someone seemed a little high-strung today... he shrugged. Probably not any of his business. John had gotten up and started moving around, too. Did this whole clan have ADD or something? What was wrong with just sitting down and reading?

Chris's attention flickers back towards his book.

Soon after unpacking all of her needed materials, Ally settled right into her work. Careful hands flipped a large notebook open, and pencil scratches could he heard as the graphite stretched across the lined pages at a rapid page. She then paused her writing, picking a new book up from the table and examining it.

Hm, Gaia's Great Vacation Spots. That would go over in the travel section the next aisle over. Destination set, she padded over to the book shelf where the new text belonged. A few flaps of her angel wings gave her just enough lift to reach the shelf high above, and she placed the book in its new home. She urged herself up just enough to peek over the ten-foot-tall holding unit. She didn't want to interrupt either of them. but...

"W-what books do you guys have?" she questioned tentatively, taking extra care in keeping her voice somewhat hushed.

"Encyclopedia Anima..." John muttered quietly, his concentration sharpening as he read the fine print text.

Encyclopedia Anima

One of the greater mysteries concerning the Animated of the Shallow Sea is the appearance of Anchor Bugs at the bottom of the Shallow Sea. While it would be simple to just assume that the creatures are just reanimated anchors browned with rust, the fact remains that these creatures not only sit at the bottom of the sea, but they also migrate, moving to the warm sands of Gold Beach. What is even more peculiar is that the Anchor Bugs on Gold Beach are typically weaker than those found in the Shallow Sea. Theories fly as to why this is, but the most apparent is that the Anchor Bugs that have migrated to the Gold Beach are out of their element. In the Shallow Sea, the Anchor Bugs may help themselves to a diet of algae, undersea reef and maybe even the odd Brain Clam. However, above the surface of the water, things change. The humid air combined with the beating sun on Gold Beach dehydrate the Anchor Bug quickly, so it is tied to the waters from whence it came. Without any algae to consume, the Anchor Bug is forced to pursue larger prey, most notably unsuspecting Gaians. However, most Gaians who traverse Gold Beach protect themselves with Rings of considerable might (CL 7.0 or above), and thus, are too tough for the Anchor Bug to hunt in its vulnerable and weakened state...

Chris looked up shortly to answer the question. "I'm reading Moby Bruce, he said in a matter-of-fact tone. "You know, the classic?" He raised his book up to show Ally the cover, then set it back down. His eyes rested on the pages before him.

Yes, as every one knows, meditation and water are wedded for ever...

He tentatively continued to absorb the words, turning the page to continue the story.User Image
