Some of us have been living this way for a long time.....

After driving three hand-me-down cars I finally have my first new one and the 3-year loan will be done *early* - before the end of the year. My son is driving a 1992 Jetta that cost us $250 (plus repairs, of course).

We got converter boxes for the TVs and are resisting any move to flat-panel digital - don't need it. Picture on the old one is just fine.

You upgrade *parts* of the computer, not the whole thing. I run Linux on my main desktop and my laptop is a hand-me-down.

My employees have new fancy phones. I don't; all I need to do is talk and take the occasional picture.

Game system? I play zOMG, the son plays WoW and he and his friends swap other stuff all the time.

I guess you just think about what you really need and what an item is really for.

The bolded statement made me laugh. I have an old a** television that was probably made in the early 90's xD But...it's always worked, and even outlived our newer living room television.

When my friends see it, they tease me about having such an old & 'bulky' television >>

So many of the younger crowd at work have these huge TV's - it's why I zeroed in on it. heck, some neighbors we used to have might not have had two nickels to rub together most of the time but they had this giant flat-panel model that the room wasn't big enough to sit far enough back from.....

why do people need this stuff?

I've never really bought a lot of technology. All I have that is actually mine is my iPod, which was free, my DS, a GameBoy Advance with a non-working screen, and a few little things like an electronic Sudoku thing.

The cool thing about iPods is, the fancy box they come in can still be used after you unpack it--at least last time I checked. I don't know about the iPhone or iPod Touch. We need more packaging like that!

I have a Cassette player circa late 80's, a VCR circa 1993, a clock radio circa mid-90'sish and CD player circa late 90s as well as the speakers. Oh and a computer stereo system from 1997. Oh, and my car is 16 years old. All work really well, except for the car. With that, i might need to buy a new used vehicle here soon. Oh, and best of all, my cell phone is a qualcomm from 1997 and yes it still works, and yes I use it.

When I got my first real job at age 18 I bought a 32-inch tube style TV because that's all there was back then (1997).

Twice now my husband has bought a 36-inch LCD TV and twice he had to return it and pay for some unforeseen expense. Meanwhile my old 32-incher is still going strong and is always there waiting for us. Sure the new Sony HD widescreen LCD ones were awesome by comparison, but this one is getting the job done for no additional cost.

We will buy a new one and actually keep it when we can afford it but it's a luxury and right now there are more important things to worry about.

well, i still have and use an old CD player from the late 90's (with rechargable AA's of course), my mp3 player is from 2003 (& even though the screen glitches out sometimes i don't forsee myself getting a new one any time in the near future), & i'm definitely keeping this laptop as long as i possibly can.
i also have a tv from my youth that i play video games on. no cable though, not even an antenna because there's going to be that digital switch soon, so whats the use? the only thing i watch on TV these days anyways is stand-up comedy & planet green ninja

Having fancy and expensive junk makes them feel important.

I feel guilty now. I bought a new cell phone friday.(a verizon blitz) but i got the go green app for it. I gave my mom the old Razr i had cuz she has a razr and she can use its battary as a backup in case hers dies. after she gets a new battary i'm donating the razr to womens domestic abuse or something tho.
(i REALLY wanted to buy a used enV off ebay but they were $100 used! without a warrenty! At least i have a year warrenty now.lol)

I dont think its a matter of just having one. I have several devices that have bluetooth(i dont NEED it but sometimes like to play around with it, connecting cellphone to bberry and such) and its such a pain! I think its empowering after you manage to get the devices to work in sync with it.(i always feel smart whenever i manage to do something sucessfully with the bluetooths but you would never catch me walking around with a bluetooth earpeice.thats a bit much)

I use my cellphone for music instead of getting new gadgets that do the same thing like ipods. Too much to carry!

heh, i bought my friends old zune off of her when she moved. like really old, first one sort of delio. and i love it! i dont know why anyone would own any mac music player over this thing! i can put my own mp3s on it, im not restricted to itunes, and it's got all the functioning (if not more than) of the ipod too. and it's bigger(data space wise) than most of the newer zunes. my other half bought a new one, the screen got broken by the dog since it was so tiny size-wise(luckily he can still use it) and its still not got as much strorage as my old one.

my boyfriend got the newest zune.(DEFF not LYM)
It's memory capabilities are RIDICULOUS! D= How can someone have so much music!?

But I DID kinda force him into a "last-year's-model". XD

His Samsung Glyde(cellphone) is a pure crap phone. He's turned it in 3 times now for a new one and same thing happens. Misses texts, talk time is now only like 2 minutes....
I obtained an alias2 for $20 from a family friend, and now it is his(b-day prezzie FTW) and yeah... Sexy phone, used(in excellent condition) and in amazing condition!(one little paint job scratch)

I was tempted to keep it for me-self. lol.
But alas, he NEEDED a "new" cell-phone, unlike me, mine works fine. LOL.

He loved it. =P

So that's better than him having to hike on down to verizon and get a NEW phone(sooo many emissions! D=)
