Prime's been wearing his soldiers as armor since Godbomber. (Yeah, I know, that was technically Ginrai. Same difference.) So I wouldn't write it off just because of that. If Autobots need to learn to combine in order to defend themselves against combining Decepticons, this movie Prime would not ask his soldiers to do anything he personally would not do.

Gestalts vs Power Rangers.... see the difference? LOL Not really. The only difference is pilots. Transformers gestalts would be closer to GaoGaiGar then sentai, though. But then, I actually kind of liked Energon Prime's combined mode with drones. Not enough to make up for his Weight Watchers Before Picture robot mode or a**-tastic vehicle mode enough to make me buy it, but it was great on its own.

This is one of the finer points of gestalt-required Prime that has recently irritated me. I am a fan of old G1, despite it's faults, and in those days Prime didn't need to combine with anything to be able to hold his own in a fight. For years now (minus the recent movie and Animated), each and every time Prime had to do anything more strenuous than lifting a box, we had to go through a combination sequence. stare
