Overlord of Night- Shadow

Renault jumped back, free hand flashing down to pick up his tome as he did so. Damn. He'd been careless. He should have paid more attention to his surroundings. Shame, and he'd been so close too. A little longer and he'd have been able to bring Nils back with him.

"Saint? Hardly," Renault replied with a chuckle. "I'd have to redeem myself far more than I have to become a Saint. But I can still take a bard. I'm hardly a beginner." He stepped forward, tome coming to bear once again. "And I can certainly take a Druid."

He paused for a moment, collecting himself. "Outnumbered? No, I believe it's fair now. Well, almost. Perhaps the two of you together can pose a fight?" Then, with a sudden action, as if something had changed, Renault's eyes snapped onto Rei's, cold and ready. "You don't understand, demon. You won't win. I will have my friends back." He took a step forward. "I will eliminate you from this world." Another step. "And I will not die! I have a Goddess to serve yet. . . but more importantly. . ." He paused, then smiled slightly. "If I did. . . Amelia would cry."

Light shone brighter through the clearing this time, along with the gentle sound of a song. The bishop's eyes slid closed, completely disregarding the battle as his lips moved in a silent prayer. He could feel it. The will of the blessed Saint. It was the same. . . the Saint wished the same thing as he. He would not lose. He could not lose.

With a rush, his eyes snapped open, and his free hand flashed out in a gesture of release. Light swirled around the clearing in a vortex, a gentle roar echoing from somewhere, and nowhere. Renault's eyes were slightly blank; it seemed he wasn't fully himself. "Druid. This is your last chance." His voice carried an echo of a kind and gentle being. "Leave now, or you will regret it."

Rei took a step back at Renault's 'transformation.' Why is it that in every damn fight I get in, the enemy 'ascends to a higher plane of ability' or some such crap? Taking another step back, Rei stood next to Nils. With a focus of his thoughts, Rei conjured a wall of entwined tendrils, making a makeshift barrier between the two forces. However, one on the Saint's side reached out, trying to push the dagger farther into Renault's chest.

"...We're leaving. Now." Rei murmured, grabbing Nils by the arm and backing away. I knew it! The brat had to pick the worst possible opponent... just perfect! In a hushed whisper, Rei spoke to Nils. "...if he tries to attack, use that damned trinket and help me out."

"... It's only temporary, child." It was as if Renault, or some being speaking to him, could read Rei's mind. "A human cannot hold the power of a Goddess long." If one read between the lines, one could easily figure out that he had perfectly resonated his power with Saint Elimine's for the moment. The light shimmered, moving inexorably forward towards the two cursed "children".

His free hand came down, removing the dagger from his chest and slashing through the tentacle before it reached him. It wasn't as if it would have done much, anyway; it was a lung injury. A moment later, however, the bishop turned away and began to walk. The light didn't fade, though; it formed a barrier, as if to mirror Rei's. "You may go." Renault's voice seemed to be returning to normal. "But only because I will not destroy you." And then he was gone, vanished into the woods as if he'd never been.

Again, something had interfered. First, in the fight with Amelia, the girl became a bastion of hope against Rei's onslaught. Now, with Renault, the man had channeled some kind of dark-smiting force allowing him to shrug off stab wounds. Without further confrontation, Renault had simply left, the fight over.

"Damnit, why can I never win a damned fight?" Rei dismissed his magic, turning away from the barrier. Walking back into the forest, Rei turned his head and looked at Nils. "Let's go. You could have killed him, but you wasted your chance. The only reason we're alive is because of pity." Rei turned back around, a tone of disgust in his voice. "If AMELIA can fight to kill, you should be able to, unless you wanna just roll over and die."

Without waiting for a response, Rei continued into the woods. If he can't hold his own in a fight, he should just give up now, the useless whelp...

Nils didn't say anything. There was nothing to say, when all that Rei stated was absolutely correct. If he went dragon in the beginning of the battle, it wouldn't have lasted as long as it did or had the result it did. But no, he didn't, and now he was left with the humiliation and the blame.

His fist connected with a tree, his hand scratching against the rough bark. He lost, and it was all his own fault. Rei had been generous enough to bail him out and let him live. If the druid hadn't come to his rescue, he would be unconscious and carried back to FEFGA's to "help him", whatever the hell that meant. And there was nothing, absolutely nothing he could have done about it. The ways of being a supporting role were drilled into Nils' mind, and he couldn't fight, even when given powerful tools to. "Damn it..."

Daniel Tuck darted down from the nearby tree, climbing onto Nils' shoulder again. Without another hesitation, he headed deeper into the woods.
