I think Dragons are the way to go.

I'm looking to blend the awesomeness and cheerful brightness of steampunk with the darkness of Lovecraftian horror.

This it a brilliant Idea. it's something I've been working on for a while myself, except for it's based on the Re-animator and has very little Airship action.

If I were you, I'd read Dunwich Horror again for inspiration. that's one of my favorite giant monster moments in Lovecraft History.

Not a lot of Dragons in lovecraft... Rats, he's go... Zombies, he's got... wild albino men in caves, he's got... not many Dragons.

Here's a link that you might find useful: The Complete Works of HP Lovecraft.

Pick up a copy of Lovecrafts Necronomicon. Old Aliester Crowley stuff and Robert E. Howard novels should help too. No dragons though. That's not very Lovecraftian. You need things much more sinister. And MA is a great location since most of his works take place in New England and the Catskills. You should also look into local folklore in the area. That's how he got a lot of his ideas.

A lot of Lovecraft was very straightforward. It was often presented as a literal factual account of a series of events, recorded in agonizing detail. I think that this attitude was a part of what made his stories so unique. Even though it was more the style then to write in that manner, the fact that he could find ways to painstakingly describe the indescribable made his stories a genre unto themselves.

If it were me, I would use Lovecraft's descriptive style, but take the pacing and action oriented tone of steampunk. That is to say, describe the machines and details into the minutia, but focus the story on a fast-paced adventure. Use plenty of adjectives, the larger, obscurer, and more seemingly superfluous, the better. Above all else, remember this; For a true Lovecraftian feel, the protagonist should not be in control of their circumstances. Uncertainty and apprehension are the keys. The hero should be frightened and powerless, always faced with something that is just far enough out of their frame of reference for them to recognize how out of their element they actually are. If you look at Lovecraft's works, his charactors seldom act. They far more often simply re-act.

I am going to be writing one, and I need ideas for monsters.
I want at least one confrontation in an airship with a monster of such immense size that said airship is miniscule when compared to it, something like this.

But yeah, I'm looking to blend the awesomeness and cheerful brightness of steampunk with the darkness of Lovecraftian horror.

Cooer, what a wicked idea, guv'nor! >^_^<

Are you just going for a Lovecraftian feel, or are you planning on incorporating elements of the actual Mythos?

If all you're going for is the feel of the stories, then I can offer a suggestion stolen from one of the supplements for the Call of Cthulhu RPG--Morlocks! (That's right, the nasty subhuman subterranean dwellers from H. G. Wells' The Time Machine!) In the Gaslight sourcebook, the Morlocks have had the time to study and duplicate the title character's time machine, using several of their own to travel back in time to the Victorian era to set up shop in the subway tunnels, underground opium dens, and other dark places in London for their own nefarious purposes--throw in a superintelligent Morlock Overlord like Jeremy Irons' character in the movie version with Guy Pearce in the title role and the classic "portal to Dimension X", and... wink

{scratching head} Come to think of it, that would work rather well for a Mythos-related story too--just change the Morlock Overlord to a deranged scientist like the one from "From Beyond", or even have them working together, nyao ha ha ha ha!
