The Potion: Part 1

“I’ll be back in a bit Sergei, just running down to the store to get some candy and decorations!” I heard Mei yell as he searched for his ever elusive keys. Really, he should just chain those things to himself, he was always losing them. Though Mei had explained to me what Halloween was, I wasn’t interested in the candy or decorations, I wanted to dress up! Hearing the click of the door as it shut I ran over to the dvds of various animes and started to pull them down… which was actually quite a task considering I had no opposable thumbs. Finding a few I looked over them. It was time to get some ideas for what I’d dress up as!

Of course my two favorites were defiantly in the equation! Wait… where were they? They weren’t in the pile I’d pulled down. Panicking slightly I searched the room, they HAD to be here somewhere. Behind the cabinet, under the pillow, on top of the TV, they were no where!!! Did Mei take them? No, why would he take a couple of dvds to the store? That made no sense.

Okay, I had to go about this logically. They weren’t in their usual place, they weren’t by the TV… another room perhaps? Hopping out of the room I checked the bathroom, nope. The front room? No… now the kitchen. I had never really looked here extensively before, but this WAS where all the food was kept, so it’d be a good idea to get to know the place. Cleverly using a combination of a nicely placed chair and a broomstick I managed to make my way up onto the cabinet. Across it was a sink, above that was a window, but no dvds!!!

This was getting ridiculous, where could they be? Turning around disheartened I made my way back to the chair… when I heard something. Was something at the window? Turning around I quietly made my way back to the sink… oh no! Someone was out there!!! Don’t panic, don’t panic… THE DVDS!!! This human had MY dvds!!! Oh he was about to be K.Oed and the exp would be mine. … What? I’d just watched Mei play hours of FF7.

I had to be quick, or he’d get away. Opening the utensil drawer I pulled out random kitchen items, and I was ready to attack! Now: Limit Break - FLYING KITCHEN ATTACK!!! The nozzle to the sink came undone as I kicked it, causing it to fling about everywhere spraying scalding water, only to be pushed out the window, causing the human (I think it was human at least…) to scream in surprise. Then, as I jumped down onto the broomstick from before many spoons, measuring cups, spatulas, seasonings, and one toaster went flying out the window; hitting their target with a thud. Making my way back to the window I could see a figure retreating down the metal ladders to the ground, leaving the dvds.

Jumping with victory I hopped out of the window and onto a rickety metal platform with some ladders going down them. Victory!!! I could hear the famous tune play in my ears as I looked over my Fruits Basket and A.C dvds… but wait. What was this? Sniffing at a small vial with blue liquid I tilted my head. Had the guy dropped this? It looked like a potion!!! Oh! So defeating villains and monsters worked the same way here too! They dropped items!

If only I could grin, but merely my eyes beamed with victory. Though my curiosity had to be satisfied, what DID a potion taste like? It took a bit of work getting the cork off, but soon the blue, shiny liquid was free for me to drink. The stuff… tasted… it was hard to describe really. Downing the last drop I realized there was no way for me to get back to the window above my head, I’d have to wait for Mei to get home. Surely he’d see I was gone? Maybe I’d make noise or something so he could find me… yes, that is what I would do.

Oh! That’s what the potion tasted like! It tasted like… whoa… suddenly I didn’t feel so good. My eyelids felt so heavy, I’ve never felt like this before. Laying down against the cool metal underneath me I could barely make out the alley below as my vision swam. Why didn’t FF characters get sleepy like this after drinking a potion. Unless… it wasn’t… a potion…

Sergei fell asleep on the fire escape outside of Mei’s apartment, only to wake to a whole new life ahead of him. (WITH OPPOSABLE THUMBS!!!)

((This is only part one of Sergei's transformation, so if this is read before I finish part 2 please don't grow Sergei juuuuuust yet. Thank you! ^w^))

The Potion: Part 2

Traffic was terrible, couldn’t believe how long it was taking. Oh no, I wasn’t driving, I was on the bus. Never had been fond of driving… perhaps one of the reasons was traffic, but now I was stuck with it anyways! It was late, I should have been home ours ago, had a paper due tomorrow too. Wasn’t my fault some idiot decided to slow down to stare at an accident that had happened hours ago, only to wind up in an accident himself. Heh, now he could stare at his OWN accident. Perhaps that was a bit mean though… but considering it was almost midnight, it was just the right amount of nice at this point.

But really, there was no point in getting upset over something I had no control over. Not like I had to be anywhere… no one to wait for me at home. Sergei was there, but he didn’t worry, he was a rabbit. But then my mind reminded me Sergei was more than that. He had such a human-like quality with everything he did; sometimes I wondered if he wasn’t something more… special. Well, special or not he couldn’t reverse a traffic jam and write my term paper. That was just wishful thinking on my part.

After what seemed forever, though was probably only two hours since we’d gotten stuck here, the bus began to move. Some people cheered in the front of the bus, waking a few sleeping passengers, who grumbled and went back to sleep. I wanted to sleep, but I couldn’t. If I only got home then I could work on what I currently was carrying in a plastic bag in my lap. It was a special project, one I was sure to do for Sergei. Tomorrow was Halloween, and it wouldn’t take long to get these made for the rabbit.

Watching as the street went by faster and faster as the bus sped up a small thought crossed my mind, made me wonder… was anything wrong? Something just didn’t feel right. But what was nagging at me, I didn’t know. It was probably just a feeling, though really, my ‘feeling’ had rarely been wrong before. I just hoped this time it was wrong.

One hour, thirty-five minutes, and a sore bus seat later I was back home. Searching for my keys I sighed, so many pockets, but it was cold out now. We had been having surprisingly warm weather. Until now that is. Fingers curling around the metal object I moved it to the keyhole, and with a turn of the key the door opened willingly. Closing the door I walked over to the living room sofa and dropped the bag onto it, looking around for a sign on the rabbit. Usually whenever the door opened he came to meet me, odd for a rabbit, but just right for Sergei.

Though once again I felt the feeling that something bad had happened, and Sergei’s lack of appearance wasn’t helping to qualm my fears. “Sergei?” I called, not expecting a spoken answer of course; but instead perhaps the sound of small pads on the floor. But there was nothing, everything was eerily silent. So I headed the first place he might be: the bedroom. Walking through the open door at the end of the hall I was surprised to find the place in a bit of a mess. DVDs were scattered on the floor, a few having fallen open, while others lay disheveled on the shelf. What had happened here? Had Sergei done this? Usually he could just click play to watch something…

But there was no brown fluffy rabbit here either, so I headed back out into the hall. “Sergei?” I called again, worry lacing my voice. This was incredibly unlike him, to go missing like this. Ducking my head into the bathroom my eyes scanned it, finding no sign of him, so I continued on into the kitchen… where the window was open. When had I ever opened that window? Now that I looked around, there were things scattered around everywhere. A bag of flour, some kitchen utensils, silverware; what had happened here?

But I didn’t like how that window was open at all. Then a thought shot through my mind, a silly thought, but what if someone had taken Sergei??? Running to the phone I dialed 911, what? Rabbit-napping was a crime too! Though as the phone rang I heard the rickety fire escape outside creek, so I hung up the phone and listened silently. That was most likely how the burglar now… was he still here? I could get Sergei back!

Picking up a knife off of the counter I approached the window slowly, before peeking over cautiously, to find… who was that??? There appeared to by some guy in a long, white lab-type coat, a single sleeve seemed to be missing though. And it had a huge hood currently covering most of his face. Looking along the length of the sleeping form's body it became apparent he was wearing a dark blue dress shirt and black tie, hanging loose around his neck. He also wore black gloves. His pants were black as well, simple enough, though some straps seemed to hang from the sides, like something you’d see at that expensive store Hot Topic. He also had several belts strapped along his leg, heh, it reminded me of Final Fantasy.

But the guy’s unusual attire wasn’t what caught my eye… he wasn’t wearing shoes… and his feet weren’t human. They looked animalistic. Long and furry I was reminded of a rabbit’s foot, and a crazy, craaaazy thought crossed my mind. Gulping softly I finally got my voice back, gripping the knife softly in case I was wrong. “Sergei?” I said cautiously, causing the figure to stir. Jumping slightly I steadied myself as the guy sat up, he groaned softly at having been woken, and then it hit me.

A single blue eye stared up at me, the other covered by dark brown hair, for a moment before he broke out into a grin. The hood fell back as he looked up, revealing a pair of brown ears, they had several piercings, and now that I looked the very grin he wore was pierced. Well, it was his lower lip, but still I hadn’t expected that. He was human… but he was a rabbit… but he was human!!! “Sergei???” I asked again. At first the guy looked confused at me, before nodding… and then he himself paused and started to look down his own body.

OH! MY! GOD!!! What happened to me?? I squeaked a human-like squeak as I looked down at myself. I was bigger, longer; clothed and… lifting my hands I saw I had OPPOSABLE THUMBS!!! It was so cool! But how… how did this happen? Looking around confused I spotted the small vial, now drained of its contents I realized what had happened. Picking the bottle up… I COULD PICK THINGS UP WITH MY HANDS! ... I handed it to Mei, pointing at it. Taking the small vial I could see the gears turning in Mei’s head. He’d figure it out, right? Oh wait… perhaps I could speak now? Certainly I had watched enough anime to know the English (and probably Japanese) language.

“Th-That” I said, my voice coming out hoarse at first. “I drank that” I repeated, and watched as Mei’s eyes widened. Could they get any bigger? I didn’t think so… but was it because of the potion, or that I had just talked? Hoping I wasn’t in trouble I bowed my head, eyes falling to my now longer legs, could I stand? Gripping at the fire escape railing I stood shakily. Oh great, entire floors above the ground and THIS is where I have to learn how to walk. But before I can move any further a hand is gripping my shoulder, steadying my shaking form. It’s Mei… and he’s smiling.

I don’t know what had happened, it was frankly scary as heck, my rabbit that I had now known for exactly one year, was now human-like. What’d they call that… an anthro? None the less, couldn’t just let him stay out here where people could see. Watching as he leaned down to pick up two DVDs I helped him inside. He was rather tall for a… rabbit… how tall were anthro rabbits supposed to be anyways? Stepping back I sighed, “good thing it’s Halloween Eve or it’s would be weird” I chuckled, before leaning against the wall. Watching as the rabbit grinned sheepishly, looking down at his own body, I shook my head. Sergei was truly one surprise after another. Guess he didn’t need the outfit anymore. “Happy Halloween Sergei” I said, bringing a smile from the rabbit-anthro-person. Happy Halloween indeed… but was this a Trick or Treat?
