why does it honestly matter if Abney Park used to be a goth band?
I don't see why that is even relevant at all.
I adore their song love though. heart

I do think that Emilie Autumn is pretentious, but I do think she's at least aesthetically pretty steampunk.
I pretty much agree with what's been said, that most "steampunk" bands are just goth bands who wear brown instead of black. Steampunk seems to be a more aesthetic thing than a musical one, which makes sense when you consider that it's first and foremost a literary genre.
Anyway, /rant.

Akonite Voltaire.... okay so he's mostly unique if not a leader of his niche too considering ThouShaltNot tends to get their songs billed as his by mistaken fans I've noticed that too. Which is strange since ThouShaltNot sounds nothing like Voltaire. Nor is Voltaire in anyway Steampunk. He's only started wearing Victorian clothing to his shows in maybe the past year or so. Most of his music is just a slap in the fact to the lame a** little goth kids who worship him. though he is a hell of a nice guy in person. Also... I don't understand Steampunk music. I tried to listen to Abney Park and they're just crappy gypsy goth music... Can someone explain to me what makes a band steampunk? Is it just the clothing they wear? If so, then steampunk isn't really even a genre of music, is it?. Just a bit of clothing and colorful fiction. I need examples. Thanks.

Have you heard their song, Airship Pirate? But is that it? What that sounds like to me is a Gypsy goth band singing about a steampunk theme. Thats like saying that White Zombie's Genre is Horror Movies and Hot rods... but just because They sing about those things... I mean their genre is clearly not "Monsters and Cars"

Honestly, I think all the goth bands labeling themselves being steampunk is bullshit. When I think of steampunk music, I think about Orchestrated, Jazz, and Big Band music.

Steel Jay When I think of steampunk music, I think about Orchestrated, Jazz, and Big Band music.
I like the sound of that. Maybe with a bit of an industrial twist. Yes something orchestrated with the sounds of clanking gears and steam being released keeping the beat.
Akonite (Myths is more of a personal taste as steampunk since I like the Lovecraft Victorian feel)
I Love Lovecraft (as well as redundancy) A lot of my steamy musings have to do with Lovecraft Mythos.

I think pretentiousness and the music industry go hand in hand. Considering that being pretentious is tantamount to having a zealous degree of self-appreciation, I think you have to be that way to get taken seriously in any seriously competitive environment.
