Rhys was temporarily interrupted from his one-man crusade by a female voice below him.
What am I doing this for...?
Rhys turned his head to look back down, but thought better of it--if a girl's below you, it's generally more polite to not look down.
"When you want someone, you'll get why I'm doing this," he said, continuing his climb. "You... err..."
The dark anger was slowly giving way to feelings of foolishness.
"You don't HAVE to follow me, you know," he said, grinning sheepishly, the darkness fading. "This is probably doomed from the start."

Renault had come back by this point, giving up on Nils; instead, he'd come to see the action. And instead, he found two amateur bishops trying to climb their way up a wall of extremely powerful dark magic. ". . . I'm just going to ask what in the GODDESS' NAME you two think you're doing?" he asked crossly, folding his arms over his chest. "You're going to get yourself hurt. And don't you think Amelia can handle herself?" He sighed and shook his head. "It'll be fine, you two don't need to act like complete idiots to try and help her. Just have faith in her."

"And what would you have me do?" Rhys shot back, sounding frustrated. "I'm not just going to sit here while Amelia gets tentacle reiped!"

"STOP BEING A RETARD," Renault roared. He was a bit tired of telling people how stupid they were being. "You go in there, you're going to distract Amelia, and she's going to get hurt. But in any case, you're not all that experienced with Light magic, and right now Rei is a lot stronger than he should be.If you go in there, things are just going to get worse. Think of it this way; if your magic can't hurt these tentacles here, why would it hurt the person controlling them? But Amelia can stab him. So she's the only one of us who has a real chance." The bishop paused for a second, then sighed. ". . . She's my daughter. Don't you think I'd take any chance if I thought it would help?"

Admittedly, Renault's yellings about stupidity just made Rhys even angrier, made him want to climb faster up the wall. To hell with this body! What did it matter if he got hurt? What did that overbearing Father know!? Saving Amelia was all that mattered! That... that...
His own thinking reminded him of Kieran.
His face soured, remembering the freaking AXE buried in Kieran's head way back when. All over TRAINING.
Rhys finally became aware that, perhaps, this WAS a stupid gesture after all. He'd known it was crazy in the back of his head, yes; But now... now it WAS sounding stupid. Plus, it was true--there was NO WAY Rei could possibly be this powerful without something extra augmenting his powers. In which case...
Light magic beat dark magic nine times out of ten.
And this would be the tenth time.
He made another handhold in an adjacent tendril--he wanted to at least avoid hitting Victoria on the way down. He then turned his body around, leaning against the back of the thing, then jumping off. It was a bit of a jump, but not very far--he landed with an "oomph" on his feet.
He scowled at the dark fence, face burning furiously but holding his tongue.

Rei pulled tendrils between Amelia and himself, hopefully forcing her to lose speed dodging them. A spear to the gut is still a spear to the gut, after all.
"Ah, looks like I've got your blood boiling!" Rei took a step back, flexing his hand to shake the tendrils between the combatants. "That'll make it that much more refreshing when it spills to the ground..."
Rei saw a white mass in the distance, the same height as his tendrils. Recognizing the red haired Bishop, he grinned. "See? They don't trust you to do anything! There they are, climbing to the rescue." Rei took another step back, and began to laugh. With a thrust of his hand, the tentacles scraped farther into the sky, carrying the passenger with it.
"Will you continue to fight, knowing the life of another literally hangs in the balance?" Rei kept eyeing the General, preparing for her incoming strike by putting up his protected arms.

Amelia skidded to the left and leaped out of the way of a tendril flailing at her legs. Each time she tried to get through them, they lashed right into her face, forcing her to move back to keep from getting a faceful of elder magic. "Ah, looks like I've got your blood boiling! That'll make it that much more refreshing when it spills to the ground..."
Amelia scowled. I am not letting these things hold me back! With a cry of determination, Amelia slashed her spearhead at a pair of tentacles aiming for her eyes. They promptly severed at the middle, the top halves falling to the ground with a limp twitch before they disintegrated into thin air, both top and bottom halves simply vanishing.
Then Rei was laughing as she struggled to fight through the mass of tentacles, slashing down writhing tendrils that got in her way, wincing in pain as a particularly sharp one slashed into her side, recreating her earlier wound. "See? They don't trust you to do anything! They they are, climbing to the rescue."
"What d-do you guys think you're doing?!" Amelia shouted, eyes wide as she spied Rhys and Victoria attempting to climb up the tendrils and reach the inner area where she was fighting Rei. Right as Rhys leaped off, they plunged above her head, carrying Victoria up with them. "No!"
"Will you continue to fight, knowing the life of another literally hangs in the balance?"
Amelia turned to Rei and scowled. She wove her way through the remaining tentacles, moving to slash the spearhead through his arms. "That is the worst goddamn pun I've ever heard!" she screamed by way of a response, eyes still blazing.

"That...that fool, I went to help him, and this is what I get? He goes off to safety and I get snagged." Victoria could almost spit in contempt at her current situation. She hated being a hostage. Much like the rest of her comrades, she'd rather be striken down than used as a bargaining tool. Pulling out the forged Divine tome... she let off a spell. "Let me go, swine." she glared almost sinisterly at Rei as the spell lit off. It had the exact effect as she pictured it.
It blew up, almost like a mine in thin air. It sent the bishop flying, even injuring her a little, because it was forged to be so powerful to break through the resistance of enemy mages. It ended up flinging her out of the harm of Rei's tentacles, but also over the wall and for a very rough landing on the ground just outside, losing her cape and dropping her staff in the process while oddly still gripping firmly onto the tome like it was a precious keepsake.
Needless to say, she was battered, but alive. It was a narrow and extremely risky escape... with pain as a reward. "Father Rhys... what was the... meaning of that? Why did you climb... when you were just retreating..? Fool..." with those being the last words she said, the only female of the group of bishops fainted and watched her world turn black.

"Oh damn it," Renault grumbled, rushing over to Victoria. "Does EVERYONE have to be so foolhardy around here? Come now, woman. You shouldn't be taking such risks," he told her still form. "Especially not knowing what you're up against." She couldn't hear him, but it made him feel a little better to tell her off. But now, he had to get back to his job again. The staff came down, and the same healing light came out once again, recovering her injuries from hitting herself and falling to the ground. "Of course, if anyone was careful around here, I'd be out of a job, I suppose. But at least none of them would be hurt. . . although I doubt that's ever going to happen." A slight smile came onto his face. "But then again, everyone does it to help each other. So I suppose it just shows how close we are."

Black mist seeped from the severed limbs as Amelia cut them down, a light fog blanketing the area. As the general's blade cut the armguards, more inky haze filled the area, giving the Druid a capable shroud. Disappearing into the darkness, Rei grasped his left arm with the opposite hand, lightly rubbing the wound. She cut a little deep there. Lookit that, I'm bleeding. As the blood met the dark tendril, the darkness overcame the liquid, rushing on top of the wound like a scab. ...so these things like blood. Interesting.
As an explosion shook the sky, a sunburst sent the female Bishop hurtling through the sky, beyond Rei's gaze. Damn. That was... that was inventive. As the two tentacles closest to the one holding Victoria wrapped together, Rei chuckled. Returning to the fight at hand, Rei sneaked up behind Amelia, restraining her spear with a tendril, and putting his right arm, the one without the cut, around her neck.
"Who says I was ready to die?" His arm tensed around her neck, tendril on the outside growing small barbs that thrashed about like branches in a storm. "Foolishly running into a fight, wasting your stamina defeating decoys, and being more concerned with an exercising Bishop than your own safety." Rei took his other hand and patted Amelia on the head, as if she were a pup following orders. "Seems like you want to die to me."

Amelia coughed through the haze, trying to wave it away as she turned right, then left, then right again. She couldn't figure out where anything was in this fog, it was too dark and it hid everything from sight. There was an explosion from somewhere behind her, and Amelia prayed that it meant good as she slashed down a tentacle trying to latch about her neck.
Amelia tightened her grip, moving to find her way out of the fog. First, regain your bearings, she started. Suddenly her spear jerked backwards, her hands slipping on it, and a clothed arm wrapped around her throat. "Who says I was ready to die?"
"D-Dammit...!" Amelia muttered, struggling. The tentacle holding onto her spear was too tight for her to pull it free, and the other tendril whipping about cut little gashes into her cheek, a couple bleeding slowly. "Let me go...!!"
"Foolishly running into a fight, wasting your stamina defeating decoys, and being more concerned with an exercising Bishop than your own safety. Seems like you want to die to me."
Amelia scowled, still thrashing against Rei's arm. "Well, I'll show you wrong as soon as you let me go!" she screamed, making an attempt to dig her heel into his foot. She coughed, the tight arm around her neck keeping her from breathing properly. "Right now!"

"Ugh... everything... hurts." Victoria winced as she was now regretting every second she just had to be awake since being healed by her fellow bishop. "I'll admit it was reckless, yes. But... what can I say? I didn't want to be a disadvantage. I didn't want to unlevel the... fighting grounds. Tristai taught me a lot about warfare. I'd never be humiliated into being a captive... anyhow. I'm supposed to help others too... Father Renault... Father Rhys..."

Oujay watched, as he stood near the bishops, as they were trying to save Amelia from Rei. Oujay was going to help the girl that fell to the ground, when one of them already had it covered so he just continued to stand there. He looked at his sword and the tendrils finally came off, so he just sheathed his sword as he didn't need it at the moment. His arms were at his side as he stared at the barrier. "What can I do?" he thought as his grip tightened with his fists, but he loosened them a few seconds after. He knew that stabbing the barrier would do nothing to help. He soon figured out what the best thing he could do was. "Wait," he thought as he followed the barrier up as it went up endlessly towards the skies. He let out a small sigh

"He rose it, so we can't even climb..." Victoria sighed as she looked at the stretching black wall. "Father Rhys... listen to me. There is only... one thing you can do. You have to do it. While I was there briefly, I saw Amelia. I saw where she was. Stand... just outside the wall where she is. That bond you share... will strengthen her. If you just fetch my staff, it will heal me. Your Tellius staves do come in handy... just go... stand there. Make your affinities give each other strength, and she will win."
For now, the weakened bishop finished putting bandages over her wounds, as she knew even staff users weren't true miracle workers... despite Renault's experience, only time would heal the wounds of her foolishness. Hopefully, her advice to Rhys would lead to Amelia's victory. {I've seen it. You can support through walls! 8D}

Rhys snapped back to reality, out of his bitter reverie. Stand by the wall...? That's it? But she can't even see me. Worse yet, I've probably scared her and--and maybe even wounded her pride. I've endangered Sister Victoria, I've looked like a fool in front of Father Renault... how will ANYTHING I do not make things worse?
But he couldn't see the harm in just walking a short distance. Even if it was meaningless, at least it would be the BEST thing he did in this fight.
He walked over and sat down on the grass, gazing sadly at the imposing dark barrier. It's not fair. How did everyone else become so... strong? How did they do it? And when? But... that's not important now.
He bowed his head, clasped his hands together, and closed his eyes.
Goddess... I don't know if I understand the pride of soldiers, but... I don't want to lose Amelia. None of us do. Please... hear my plea and grant her strength to withstand this battle. Let her be spared.
