For long ranged, a crossbow would be useful. You can easily make crossbolts from stuff you find around your secret hide-out. They also make very little noise when fired so won't draw any attention. Unlike hunting rifles or any other fire arm.

How about a crowbar then?

I would choose a crowbar. It serves a dual purpose. Not only could you use it as a weapon, but you could pry stuff open if'n you had to.

True. Well, if you have a silencer for your rifle/pistol/whatever you happen to use, then woot. :D
Another plus with the bow, however, is you can alwyas get your arrows back. Just pluck them from the zombie's heads. XD
I'd also assume that gun shops and what have you would have already been raided at the begining of the zombie onslaught. So ammo would be harder to come by for those types-o-weapons.

That's true. There's also the use of fire. They can't do too mush when they're a pile of ashes.

Yes! Burn them. >D
Let's just hope they burn quickly. o-o They may set stuff on fire if they're still walking around. And I would think they wouldn't notice. They're dead, after all...well...kind of. oO; XD

Not necessarily true. Fire is a good choice to use against zombies, due to its ready availability, but the already decaying flesh of zombies has an advantage the living do not.
The fact that it is rotting, means that their skin holds more moisture than anything else. If you are to use fire, best to use it on those already long dried out. They burn quickly, and spread to others in their wake.

Fire isn't always your ally, however. It is uncontrollable for the most part. You should never use it in purely static defense. It is better if used when you intend to flee right after. You need to consider you surroundings too. If you're in a building, for example, that would be a bad move. Smoke inhalation could kill you long before the zombies could. Considering it may take hours for them to fry.
Random fact: Avoid hospitals at all costs. That's where most of the infected will be. Those who were first introduced to the virus will likely head to the hospitals for treatment. They'll die there, be placed in the onsite mourge and reanimate within it's confines. The spreading of the disease shall soon follow and with that, more zombies will be created. On the plus, you could hang out in a cemetary. Any bodies would have reanimated long before they could be properly burried. And the rumors of zombies crawling out of the grave is just that, a rumor. Only fresh corpses can become zombies. Any person already six feet under can't come clawing back to the surface. And even if for some reason a zombie were burried, they only have human strength, at best. No man could escape from a fresh casket placed under tons of dirt.

Zombies can't climb ladders. Using a route that involves climbing is a surefire way of eluding pursuing zombies. "It's not hip-hop, it's Electro"

And cross bows would be easier to find? XD

MissTress of DisTress And cross bows would be easier to find? XD The basic fashioning of a crossbow is pretty easy, once you find suitable materials. The only hard thing to find would probably be the string to launch your bolt, I assume. neutral
