Vale did not accept failure. He would try, try, and try again until he was not failing. That was the way he'd faced every project in life.

But he knew. Like a thought springing to the forefront, he knew there was one avenue left. He wanted the Quinn he knew back - the one he fought with on a daily basis, the one he swore he would kill one day. Because that was the Quinn he knew.

"There ee's...one last thing. That might v'ork. Might not." His heart was racing in his chest pretty awkwardly, even as he tried to sound casual.

Why did this make him so nervous now? Because it wasn't heat of the moment? Because it wasn't sprung upon him? Because Quinn wasn't making him angry? Because he wasn't stuck in a feral rage?

Get it over v'ith!

Determinedly, he moved. He wasn't quite sure how it happened - one minute Quinn was sitting up, the next he had the other godling pushed down into the couch. And he didn't much care, either.

If Quinn didn't remember how he kissed, he would kill the other godling, right here, and right now. Annoying idiot!

At first, nothing happened. Quinn was surprised at being kissed, but nothign special happened. He didn't remember anything, but he liked having this boy pressing him down into the couch.

Then Vale bit his lip, and everything came rushing back. He pushed Vale off of him, and onto the floor.

"You ******** b*****d! You bit me! Again! You made me sick the last time you kissed me, you know. I was in bed for two days! Two!" He grumbled, but reached out his hand to help Vale off of the floor, standing up.

After Vale had stood up, he flipped around, grabbing Vale's arms and wrapping them around him, pressing his back against Vale's chest. "That was sweet of you to help me, though. Such an...affectionate kitty." He grinned. "And you do seem to like kissing me, don't you?"

Quinn paused for a minute, remember the boyfriend comment, and was taken aback. The Vale he thought he knew would have yelled a 'No!' at that question, leapt away from him, and ran three blocks down into an alleyway to clean.

But he had responded with a very noncommital response.

Quinn detached from Vale, but kept ahold of his hands, a sober expression on his face.

"You said you didn't know if you were my boyfriend. Does that mean..." He paused.

"That maybe..."

"Or maybe you just--"

"I mean--"

"You know?"

Quetzalcoatl had a very figurative facepalm.

You just asked my immortal enemy's godchild out, didn't you.

It wasn't a question.

...Yes?

He wished he could melt into the floor.

What had he been thinking? This was a mistake! A mistake! Why had he ever wanted this Quinn back?

He growled, even as humiliation lit his cheeks, about to snarl an insult back and maybe punch Quinn's head injury again. But then he saw the look on Quinn's face, and snapped his jaw shut again.

This. This was more than too close. He froze, even as humiliation changed to cherry-red embarrassment and horror, eyes wide like a deer in the headlights.

Work brain, work! All the begging in the world wouldn't make his brain give him a response. He must've been staring with that ridiculous look on his face for a solid fifteen seconds before snapping out of it, abruptly and hurriedly pushing Quinn towards the door with a desperation born out of the need to suddenly and immediately clean every block within a three-hundred foot radius.

"Ah! You are cured, hurrah! Time to go home, da? Because that ee's v'here you should be. Yes," he added, as if any of that made sense. "You must hurry along. To get to v'here you need to be. V'alk home safely, v'atch out for strangers, do not take candy from homeless people, bye!"

Quinn grinned, and twirled out of the way of Vale's usherings, putting his hands on his hips and looking at Vale again. "I'm serious. You weren't sure one way or the other, so does that mean you would?" He sighed, and looked at the ground. "Look, I'm not used to stuff like this either," he muttered, completely sincere, "Most of my experiences have been one-time deals. This isn't like that. At least, it doesn't seem like it."

He looked up at Vale, and sighed. "You know what? Nevermind. Nevermind. Screw it." he stomped over to the door, and threw it open. He didn't even look at Vale again.

"I'm leaving. Bye." He slammed the door behind him and stuffed his hands in his pockets, turning to walk down the street toward his house.

...As much as I'd like it to be, I don't think that's the truth.
I don't want to talk about it.

He reached his hand up to wipe at his eyes, then stuffed it back in his pocket.

He stared at the door. It was closed, and there was no Quinn. That was what he'd been aiming for, right?

Wrong.

He was being a coward, leaving it here. Quinn had faced him honestly, and he hadn't returned the favor. A coward would let it die here - crawl back into the house, mope and sulk and feel sorry for himself.

Valeriu wasn't a coward.

He grabbed his keys, out the door and feet slamming onto the pavement in seconds. Where was-

There.

"V'ait!" It was a hard stop for Vale, momentum almost overthrowing him as he ran up behind Quinn, arm hooking around him to keep the godling in place so he couldn't see the nervousness on Vale's own face. "Just v'ait."

This was hard. Harder than he'd originally thought when he'd raced out the door. It felt like he was standing on the edge of some precipice, and he couldn't see the bottom - but he was about to jump anyway.

"I don't know," he admitted. "I like you, sometimes. I hate you, sometimes. I don't know ee'f ee't ee's friendship, or something more. I am, v'as, only ten. I don't know anything about this." He hooked the other arm around Quinn in a not-quite-hug, frowning. "I am serious v'hen I say I v'ill kill you. I v'ant to v'in this game. For my sister - and she ee's the most ee'mportant thing ee'n my life."

"I don't even like boys like that," he barked out a humorless laugh, shaking his head. "But you don't go away. And I don't v'ant you to."

"So, I don't even know ee'f v'e can. You are my enemy and my opposite, and..." He trailed off, frowning. "I don't v'ant us to end up like our gods."

That was what he was afraid of the most. That that would be their fate. It seemed inevitable, no matter how much he fought. That the little bit of friendship they had would be torn to shreds by hatred and mistakes, and left with only regret and blind loathing. He didn't want that.

For once, Quinn didn't feel like crying. He didn't feel like anger, or another violent mood swing. He just felt warmth. From the other boy's body, from the godling's speech, everything. Quinn didn't feel like talking. He didn't feel like babbling incessantly, and he didn't feel like moping. He just felt like staying there, frozen in that awkward hug, forever. He listened to everything Vale said, and remained silent for a few moments, just standing there, his hands resting on Vale's arms.

"Heh...I'm older than you. Did you know that? Just by a little bit, but I am older. It's kind of funny. You're definately the more mature, responsible one. I'm just the flightly loser." He shifted around, so that he was facing Vale in their hug, and wrapped his arms around the other boy's neck.

"I'm not so sure you like anyone like that, usually, Valeriu," Quinn snorted. He used his full name, and did his best to mimic the romanian accent to make it sound authentic. "I don't want you to leave, either. I don't know if I could kill you, Valeriu. I doubt it. You're stronger than me, faster than me..." He sighed. "We're both stupid for having anything to do with each other."

Quinn buried his face in the boy's neck, clenching him tightly. "Our gods made mistakes. We don't have to make the same ones." Quinn sighed. "But Quetzalcoatl is a lot nicer than Tezcatlipoca. He'd probably be really angry, wouldn't he?" Quinn shook his head slightly.

"I don't care what he thinks. He's a jerk." Quinn yawned. "I'm tired. Apparently being knocked unconscious doesn't count as sleep." He didn't let go of Valeriu. "And my head still hurts."

He closed his eyes, and hung off of Vale, falling into him, and falling asleep and unconscious.

"Don't leave."
