O.o before I had my wooden mouthpiece that went with my clarinet before my friend accidently broke it, i really never had to clean it because it never got all crusty and mooldy. I still cleaned it though.
Now that I have my plastic mouthpeice It gets really gross at times. I havent cleaned it yet, I plan on cleaning it after football games (like 1 more game to go) Although I had issues with reeds and they get all mooldy out of no where after i just got it. It turned out it was from my mouthpeice holder so i threw that out Dx But it was getting stuff on my mouthpeice as I played ._. it was gross.

Since I salivate a bit more than other people [I tend to spit whilst talking from time to time], I wipe mine off after I finish a piece of music. I usually don't clean it for about 1-1/2 months because wiping it off with my shirt helps it from getting all crusty.

I don't play a mouthpiece needing instrument (Flute!) but I have a brother who does. He cleans his mouthpiece out after every practice and such but the top is getting a bit yucky. A friend of mine suggested Lemon juice because the acidity will get the stuff off, but the mouthpiece will taste like lemons for a while.

Why was I eating while reading this thread? Yuck. I'm glad I play the flute. Easiest woodwind to clean, hands down! I've seen them get pretty gross inside the cylinder, though. But not many flautists are so lazy as to stick a cleaning rod and cloth in the thing and move it around a bit...

I don't clean my mouthpiece out as often as I should. Especially considering I sometimes play my clarinet with (possible tmi ahead) food still in my mouth YES I KNOW IT'S GROSS but really, what are you supposed to do when you've just taken a big bite of something and the football team scores immediately afterward and you have to play the fight song right away? And anyway, I move it over so that it doesn't get in my instrument.

You know what's the problem with cleaning MY instrument out? It's a bass clarinet! There's no swab you can stick in that baby. At least not one that the school provides. I do clean my mouth piece, but I'm a real procrastinator, so sometimes it gets gross. gonk

Well. My bass trombone mouthpiece has... oxidized.
It's a lovely brown shade of antique nickel-plated brass. D:
And my other tuba mouthpiece is rusting inside. >_>
And they're all nasty. Like every mouthpiece that ever existed.

for all those people who were eating while reading this: what were you thinking? yeah i normally don't clean my mouthpiece out. technically, it's not MY mouthpiece. i borrowed it. i have my own mouthpiece but it's like 12c and the BD wants us to use 5b (or something like that). It gets really nastly, and its old.

I know what you mean.
I clean my flute out every day, but the other flutes in my section don't even bother to clean it at all. I think the last time they cleaned theirs was six month ago, maybe more!
Disgusting.

It is a bit annoying that everyone around us is eating, but at least our isntruments don't get gross. I hardly ever clean out my mouthpiece. Surprisingly, it does't get that bad. A few crusties get on, but it isn't that bad. Actually, on my old mouthpiece I had to clean it out once a week. On my new mouthpiece, I only have to clean it out when I feel like it. I did today, because I was giving claribella a spa dayXD
