(just making sure)
The dragon let go of Cedric and sniffed at Katrina as it thought about this new possibility. Why, there was a river not far from here, it remembered, and immediately took off. Now its gait was loose and carefree, though still a fast trot. It didn't bother trying to fly. Its wings might not be developed enough, or any magic that went along with flying.
Cedric let out the breath he had been holding. "He doesn't like playing with the others his age, so he plays with me instead when I come. Usually it doesn't turn out like that. He must have been showing off for you," Cedric guessed as he glanced at his arm. Eh, a few scratches but no real harm done. "I know where he's going," he said as the dragon topped a gentle hill and disappeared from sight. "It's a long walk. How long can you stay? Time is faster here, you know. I need to get back soon."

"I can stay as long as I like. I am a woman after all, they can't keep me penned up. But mother would be upset if I wasnt back before late morning. It was just before midnight when i left..." Katrina was insinuating that time, for her, was not a problem.
"You know Cedric," Katrina began tentively. "If your little one over there doesnt play well with the others, your attention will only make it worse." She paused thoughtfully. "He needs to make a name for himself, you know."

He nodded when she was telling him that she had all the time in the world, if she needed it. So did he, but he wanted to get back in time for something. Then she started talking about the dragon.
Cedric hung his head for a moment. He had thought of that already, but knowing what to do about it was hard. "I know. But when he was born he didn't get as big as the other dragons, not as quickly. He was too skinny, like his bonded was being starved to death. So my wife and I helped feed him... He's still not as big as he should be, but he seems healthy now. But that's why he plays with me. The only difference between me and his father is that I can't scare him away with a show of my teeth when I've had enough, so that he'll scamper off to play with the other youngsters."

"Yes, but you can disappear whenever you feel like it. But you have tamed him and taught him that you will feed him and pay attention to him. Its a kind gesture, but not to a wild animal." Katrina idly picked a flower from the foliage along the side of the path. "You need to teach him how to hunt on his own. That will give him some back bone so that he doesn't depend on you anymore. He will start playing a little more rough, and when he does that with you, tell him no and if he doesnt stop, you blink out. Over time he will learn that to play rough, he must do it with his own kind because humans can't and won't play like that. It always worked with the animal cubs at the compound, as well as training the boys that would become shoulders. It improves community." Katrina loved talking about animals, even if it was to a man. At least he may understand some of the concepts, though he could never have thought them up on his own. Not from what she knew about men anyways.

Cedric was frowning at her, obviously upset, and for more than one reason.
"I tried some of that. But his father told me to stop. They aren't just wild animals-- they talk to each other. They may have hot blood but they also have big heads. They don't talk much to me, you know, only if I'm interfering where I shouldn't. I don't know. The dragons seem to be specialized, just like humans. One dragon performs one job, the other a different one... Maybe they have a different job lined up for him, you know? Or maybe he has a birth defect. Maybe he's really just retarded, and I can't tell. That's why I just go off the few hints the dragons give me. They can't talk to me directly, you know. They talk to your dragon while you're away and then you get the message through the bond, later."

"It figures it would be a male to stop what is obviously better for his child." Katrina scoffed. Males were always making things more complicated. "And its no surprise at all that he never explained himself. And even if he did have a birth defect, thats no reason to exclude him" Katrina was angry at this. It was here opinion that everyone could contribute to society. Indeed everyone had to contribute as much as they could.
"The dragons dont seem all too flexible about these 'specific tasks' you are going on about. It doesnt seem like you can explain it all too well. But you can explain that frown to me." Katrina was passing up the important questions to find ways under Cedric's skin. Maybe it was to weaken his resolve or put him on the defensive, but the truth was that Katrina had no idea what type of man he was. She just wanted to figure him out and had no idea how to go about doing it.

"Feretris has ruined my child!" he said agrily. He turned away from her with his next words and stalked off, again in the direction the dragon had gone. "What else should I expect! I didn't help raise you-- you have no love for me! You know nothing of the world outside your twisted little compounds, and you don't even wish to learn!"
"It might be better that we don't speak at all," he scoffed. "You don't listen when I speak, any way."

"Well you certainly yell like a father." Katrina mocked as she faked a pout and hurried to follow him.
"And in case you didnt hear, I am the animal expert at my comound. I know much about nature and the world outside my compound, so dont pretend to know that much more than me! Besides if all they say about you is true, I hardly doubt you can blame my love of getting into trouble on Feteris and still claim to be my father!" He was such a child! Stomping around when he didnt get his way, sulking when she teased him. Hardly the strong 'Cedric' that she had heard about.
"I dont need some man to come and tell me what I dont know, but since you seem to know more about this place, than maybe I can suffer you helping me." Katrina said, sighing. It wasnt a ploy she would use if he was actually a slave, but he wasnt. So she would have to give and take and hope he could manage. "Look, I'm asking you questions and playing your little game, so how about you answer me? I mean what else would you want me for? Do you seriously think I would believe that I come to a new world and 'suddenly' meet my father? What are the chances of that happening?"

It was true that Cedric's anger was potent. How do you think he got in trouble all the time on Feretris? There was a point when he knew it was better for him to behave and squeeze by on whatever the women gave him, but them some thing would happen and the rage of a man who knew that he could be king of a country reared its head. And now he had little reason to hide it. Maybe she would even think about his words later.
Cedric shook his head at her question. "Luck. You don't have to believe me." He stared at her, not really calmed down but speaking more clearly and slowly. "We may never see each other again." They had stopped walking. "Unless you want to see me. Then you could tell me when to come and meet you here. My schedule might be a bit more flexible than yours. I have to go soon, though. There's some one who needs me back home."
He knew that if he didn't leave soon enough, his wife would worry and come here. He didn't want the two of them to meet. He felt protective of his wife, who had an unstable mind any how.

"I could, but you would have to tell me which dragon to relay my message to." Katrina said. "There is something I want to ask you though, before you leave. Its about Drxisisliege. She and I are bonded so we switch places when I come here and she returns wheen I leave. I have been able to communicate with her and I know what she looks like, but I have never seen her. Will I ever get to? We are so connected, but will I never come face to face with the dragon that knows me best?"
Katrina would give anything for a few precious moments with Drex. Since childhood they could always count on one another. Katrina made Drxisisliege feel safe and in control and Drex always made Katrina feel strong enough to go on in the face of danger. Just once, she would like to see Drxisisliege with her own eyes...

Cedric paled, a strange thing to see on skin that was already so light. He drew himself up. "I pretty sure there is a way. But if I'm right, it hasn't been done in a very long time. It seems like something that would throw off the balance... I've been considering trying it, but I can't think of a good enough reason. Please, if you are really interested in this, do not do it without me. You need another person to do it, any way. I don't have enough time to tell you tonight, but I can brush up on my research before we meet again..."
He paused. The idea of doing what she wanted to do still made him feel a bit sick. But it also gave him another idea. "Do you want me to bring you the literature I have? I could leave it for you here." If he did, and she took it to the real world, there might be problems if she was found out. Or they could keep it in the dragon world and she would only get to read it when she visited. Either way, in a world without easy printing, such an offer was a big one.

"You would do that? Wait...you CAN do that?" Katrina was very excited to hear him not only state that he could bring actually writting from one world to the next, but that he was willing to do so. Since she had learned to read, Katrina had always endeavoured to all but consume every text she could get her hands on. She had considered writing her own book on the wildlife she had learned about, but that would require travelling far and would need much resources she didnt have. "I would very much appriciate it if you would. I could come back and read it some other time. Or perhaps...oh never mind, I'll talk to you about that later. If you need to leave, I dont want to keep you any longer. We can arrange another meeting soon, preferrably at a time where you can stay longer without worrying about that "someone" you need to get back to." Katrina smiled, it was amusing to her that a man would worry about his mistress when most woman, in her mind, could do well enough without any man. Still it was kind of cute to see him so anxious over this. "I'm starting to feel a little tired anyway, Drxisisliege said she would worry if I stay too long." Even as she finished talking she heard the disapproving acknowledgment from Drex, who was warning her she would be too tired to sneak back into the complex when she returned.

"One last thing," he said, sounding somber and backing away from her. "Don't you ever feel your heart pounding and your head spin when you go back and when you come here? Be careful."
There was no flash of light or anything so obnoxious as that. He was just gone. And his dragon was just there, a big scaly white beast. The dragon, knowing exactly who she was from Cedric, made sure to lean in real close and sniff at her suspiciously. She could have poked its eye out if she wanted to, but conversely, it could have bitten her in half.

It was rather disconcerting to be concerned at one point with demanding that Cedric explain to her what was so dangerous about this condition and the next concerned with not startling a massive creature into seperating her body in two. She smiled weakly at the creatures inquistive scenting of her and stepped back. Come on Katrina, its time to come back Drxisisliege said. Katrian nodded and composed herself. Cedric had the pleasure of startling the wits out of her, as no doubt he had intended, but she still had her dignity. The next moment she was gone and Drxisisliege was relieved that they were both in their respective worlds. It would be no problem for Katrina to get into the compound, but she would surely sleep very deeply once she got their.
