His immediate reply to her request interested her, but she kept silent as he glided through the water as though a part of it, moving solidly through the cool liquid. He reached her dripping excessively, creating various puddles at her side adding to the ones she had created herself, and crouching slightly as she looked up at his large frame, Leslie felt the soft fangs fold around her cuff and yank her gently off the ground. Her body twisted as to get comfortable; her tail tucked between her legs while her spine curled, forcing her hips beneath while her paws hung forward in an attempt to acquire balance.

They hit the water without a word. Would this become a tradition for the pair, this silence? Or was the shore there parting place? The water swarmed around her but like any grand guardian Dover kept her head firmly above the surface. The pup wiggled to her feet as they came to the shore. The droplets that poured atop her as the male shook startled her at first until she looked up, watching him rid his outer coat of the thick liquid and swiftly she followed his example, whipping her body back and forth in rapid succession until the very tip of her tail gave out a lash. Blinking, she looked back to the dark male.

Swiveling her ears forward she listened to his poetic tune. Wait? What now? Her as she started off the pup shrank down, feeling the breath of realization that her brief company was coming to an end and she would soon be once more alone. A terrifying grip latched around her, creeping through her veins at the thought of one more silent night in the darkness. Without thought she bound forward, nearly running into the hind of the large male in the process, but slowed at his side, searching for some excuse she could use that wouldn't have him push her away. "Your leg looks pretty bad," she commented, hiding her anxiety, looking over the injury.

"Observant," Dover snorted in response, limping right along regardless of her company, amber eyes seeking an appropriate area to recline. It seemed he would not be rid of the youngling yet, though the fact that she wasn't a chatterbox was helpful for her case; still, he worked alone and was unused to having a tagalong. And considering she had no home apparantly . . . ah, he might be stuck with her now after playing the hero. Great. Babysitting wasn't ever part of the job description. Dover stepped over several rocks by the shore, continuing up the incline and putting little weight on his wounded leg as they began to turn back into the forest. "Can take care of myself, y'know. S'just a scratch. Know anyone I can take you to?"

She didn't catch the sarcasm, to interested in watching him as he meandered slowly up the slope, and without much thought at all she followed after him. Her large puppy paws romped right against his heel, while her head bounced along with her shoulders as her speed attempted to keep up with the male's strides. Lucky for her his pace was hindered, otherwise Leslie would probably be forced to trot in order to keep up with his gate. Every now and again her golden eyes would glance toward the gash, but swindled downward before the male's eyes could catch her in the act. "Doesn't look like just a scratch tah me," she retorted, her tone mild enough. Her pads continued as they traveled farther away from the water. They followed onto the rocks and past as they furthered their distance, sauntering along as she followed the lone male. She was quick to answer his question. "Nope."

Another sigh. "You stuck with me, then?" Dover asked, still reluctant despite knowing the answer already. "Hope it's not out of some sorta pity or adoration; too sweet for my tastes. Speaking of . . ." He tilted his nose down and began sniffing, trying to scent out prey as they walked. He had no direction really, and the best would have to be food if he had another mouth to feed for the time; though Dover was quite convinced he would get rid of her sometime soon. At length a meandering squirrel's scent was caught, and he turned inland without warning.

"Mom named you yet?"

She watched him, waddling along as he spoke, her ears cocked forward at attention. Leslie didn't say much, she didn't feel the need to nor did she really find the right opportunity to answer the statements he muttered. Yes, she was stuck with him, but was it out of pity? Well, maybe if he pitied her, but for the moment she used his wound as an excuse to tag along with him, both truthfully concerned and afraid to be alone anyway. She perked a bit more as he became suddenly thoughtful, moving now as though searching for something. Doing as she was before, the pup simply followed.

Giving a grin, she gave a nod at the question. "Yep. I'm Leslie. What are you called?"

"Before dear Mother went and keeled over
She gave me a glare and called me Dover."

Lame, but he was in a rather "lame" mood anyway to think of more clever rhymes. So Leslie, huh? Normal enough name for a pup decorate with berries on her fur, of all things. Maybe her parents weren't as nutso as their genes. Mind you, another passing thought was that at some point some berry-feeding beastie would come tackling the gal from above in search of non-existant food clinging to her pelt, perhaps even tearing off some hair in the process. The musing brought him a small chuckle, the first sign that day that the wolf indeed could have a sense of humor. Sort of. When he fancied.

"Here is the deal
If you stay at my heel
You help find the meal
Even if we must steal.
Got it?"

Naturally her eyes grew large with his single statement. Was he serious? Certainly any sort of revelation wouldn't have just been spout off with such uncaring flare unless it was true. She couldn't imagine such a scenario. Well, at least he was named? Was that good enough? Leslie said nothing, only giving a nod to signify she accepted his name. The chuckle came without her having any idea what had brought it on. All she knew was that Dover had been staring at her pelt when it occurred -but that meant nothing, he could have been looking straight through her for all she knew.
When another poem laced from his lips the pup perked up, grinning slightly at the sound of it. This wolf, though strange, fascinated her. His lyricism balanced the savage killing that had just occurred moments before. She listened, cocking her head as puppies do, and gave a firm not afterward. "Yes sir!" she said excitedly, prancing up about his paws.

So sprightly little Leslie was, the innocence of pups - he had forgotten what that was like. "Good, good. Start by scouting," Dover told her, "since this leg of mine's a bit of a hinderance. Got to make each movement count. Go on now." He did what he believed was a nudge forward with his paw, but an underestimation of his strength versus Leslie's light weight made it that instead the holly-touched gal was rather tumbled over instead. "Whoops."

This would be just temporary, he told himself. Just until he could find a pack or some couple to take her in, and nothing more. At least this sort of companionship left him in charge, which was better than Dover could have said of any other friendship he had had in the past. Perhaps some good could be done by sparing a life, teaching the pup basic skills to survive, rather than ending it in mercy from her loneliness.

She grinned, about to follow his instruction when his paws tripped forward over her, causing her to duck down immediately with her head low and tail between her legs. She looked at him and grinned sheepishly, hoping he hadn't hurt himself with the exercises. He seemed well enough. Leslie would make it her duty to ensure his wound would heal cleanly, fully, and to the point he was at 100% once again. She felt it was something of her responsibility, the only way she could repay his kindness. It was her fault anyway, correct? But for now, as far as she was concerned, she felt she'd grow used to this male, having no intention in the least to leave his side anytime soon.
