"Oh, well, I think...I would really appreciate that," Kinsey finally nodded. She adored Varun, even if she hadn't had him for very long, and she didn't want his speech stunted because she didn't have all the time in the world. Ford did need to be trained because, unfortunately, she still needed to make a living. Considering how much the seasonal Raevan disliked venturing out, she highly doubted he'd appreciate being kicked out onto the streets.
"Whaddya say, Varun? Maybe Phiel can teach you while I take Ford down to the station?"
Varun, while initially annoyed they had started talking like he didn't exist, was equally as annoyed to be brought back into the center of attention. Having never suffered someone making a decision for him, he didn't see why he had to make all these decisions himself. He looked from his guardian, to Phiel, and back to Kinsey. He shrugged. "Suppose." Kinsey used that word a lot.
Kinsey chuckled. "You suppose what, Var?"
A fierce scowl. He was getting there! "Suppose so."

"It would only be on days that I did not work," Phiel said, relenting a little as he looked at Varun's face. The Raevan did not appear happy to have his company, and a slightly terrifying thought crossed his mind. What if Varun was destructive? And what if Kinsey saw fit to bring the rather festive Raevan to his home? Oh god, what about the fish, was it even safe...? There was something aquatic about Varun, but what if he was a predator, or something...
"Although I am impressed with how much he knows already," Phiel said with a small smile.

It was probably a very good thing that Phiel did not know that not only was Varun aquatic, his soul was that of the great sea monster, the leviathan. And while his reaction to other aquatic beings was currently unknown, keeping him away from Phi's beta fish was probably the safest bet. Varun had issues distinguishing 'things he liked' from 'things he could keep'.
"Like I said, he likes words. He just picks things up. I don't think he always understands what he's saying." A shrug and a frown. "Teaching him to read would probably expedite the process. I hope. I'm not sure how to teach his exactly. Maybe I could get him one of those books from elementary school."
Varun puffed up, tossing his head a little as Kinsey doubted his grasp of the spoken language. "Understand! Yes, understand." He nodded, motioning nothing in particularly with his hands. "Read? What?"
"I swear, what is his favorite word."

"Well, if he understands the word 'what'," Phiel chuckled softly, "then he is in fairly good shape already. He can at least ask about something he does not understand. However, I do not know if he will understand explanations, so..." He shrugged, one-armed, before looking back at Varun.
"Reading is in books," he explained quietly, chuckling a little. "We will get you some of your own, once we have taught you to read a bit. Would you like that, Varun?" Phiel made certain to address the Raevan directly. He had noticed that the redhead responded best to that, or at least he thought he did...

Varun nodded, soundly pleased by the idea. Reading meant words, right? More words was an excellent thing. "Yes," the Raevan responded firmly. "Books. Mine. Yes." He nodded again, watching the two humans.
Kinsey chuckled, pleased he was so enthusiastic to learn. Imagine if he'd been like her, and didn't want to learn anything remotely scholarly? She had been a terrible brat when she was little and gods praise her mother for still getting her to sit still and practice her reading, but Kinsey was more than glad Varun had a different approach.
"I'll see what I can get from elementary schools," she promised them both.

"I think the library might be a nice place to bring him, too," Phiel said quietly, shrugging a bit. "Well, once he learns the concept of borrowing. Though perhaps that might teach him."
He thought about it for a moment, then hesitated; amused, he looked down at Ford, whose face wore that happy-puppy almost-smile that dogs sometimes wear. "... Then again, perhaps that would not be wise. Mister Ford here may think that library books are tasty." With a little grunt, he pushed himself up off the ground, a wince on his features.
"In any event, I should not impose too long. I have a job to prepare for soon, and I am sure that Varun would prefer to have you to himself awhile longer, Miss Kinsey." Phiel's smile was subtle, but there; it crinkled around the edges of his eyes.
