Joshua frowned, he wanted to leave, he really did. He also had a conscience, and it wouldn't let him leave someone when they were in danger. He didn't see much difference between gators and sharks-- they both had teeth.
At the moment, Gators seemed more dangerous because they had legs. Sharks didn't, so they couldn't chase after you once you got on land. "Maybe we should try catching a smaller one?" He asked. "A less hungry one?"

"When there's three right in front of me?" she asked, as if he were the crazy one. "Why would I--"
Someone cleared his throat from behind them and a look of pure guilt crossed Polly's face as she turned. Right then, though, one of the gators lunged forward, his jaws snapping.

Joshua jumped a foot in the air as the gator snapped. He quickly moved away from it, and once he was sure he was safe, he turned to see who'd cleared their throat and made Polly look so guilty. He knew that look.
It was the look his mother wore everytime his Dad caught her after she'd gone shopping."You didn't tell him you were coming, did you?" He muttered from the corner of his mouth.

"It was going to be a surprise," Polly whispered a bit too loudly.
"Trust me, I'm surprised," Tock said as he stepped forward in all his pirate gator glory. He was over six foot and looked as dangerous as the gators around them, but he reached out, plucking Polly up by the back of the shirt and walking away as if the gators weren't even there. "You coming, kid?" he called over his shoulder.
"It was going to be a present!" Polly complained as she dangled from his grasp.

Joshua knew Polly was in trouble, but that didn't keep him from following Tock. He was safe, for now. Even if pirates were dangerous, even if gator-pirates were worse, it was better than being eaten by a hungry gator.
Anything was.

Tock said something too quietly for Josh to hear, then, heading into town. But Polly's reply was loud enough for everyone around to hear. "But you won't let me get a dog!"
"You've got Fyrebird, ain't that enough pets?" Tock asked, sighing. "Besides, gator meat gets tough after a certain age."
"Then we should eat the damn cat-bird before it gets tough, too," Polly said, sullenly. She turned, looking at Josh. "You've got a pet, don't you?"

Joshua nodded at Polly. He had pets, sure. But why were they talking about eating them? "Cats, mostly. Dad has a fox." He said. "They aren't really mine, most of them are Mom's."
He thought of Nikki and shuddered at the thought of eating her. That would be horrible. "You know, one of my cats is going to have kittens soon. If you want, I can give you one." As long as she promised not to eat it.

The look of horror that crossed Polly's face would have been hysterical if she hadn't started screaming. "No CATS NO!!!" she bellowed, struggling against the hand that carried her.
Tock sighed, picking her up and hugging her easily. "She'll face three gators without a thought, but mention one cat and she turns into a maniac," he muttered, now that Polly was merely whimpering and hugging herself. "I blame it on that bi--witch of an ex mother," he added, covering Polly's ears as he explained.
Polly's long, feathered tail came up and she hugged it protectively. "I hate cats," she said.

Joshua blinked, he didn't know what else to do. He hadn't meant to upset her; he had never seen anyone react to the word 'cat' quite like that; except the mouse in Alice in Wonderland, and he didn't count. "I'm sorry," he said, looking from Polly to Tock.
Maybe if he changed the subject, Polly would cheer up. "What kind of animals do you like?" He asked.

"You probably don't want to know," Tock told him before Polly could respond. He put her down, letting her look around. "We should head home, though," he said. "It's about time for dinner."
"I want ice cream," Polly said.
"Tell that to Jake."

"I should be heading home too, my Mom'll worry." He grimaced, showing how much his mother worrying upset the entire family. "It was nice to meet you Polly, you too, um.. Mr. Polly's Dad." Joshua said, waving, before taking off towards Barton. He couldn't wait to share his adventure with his parents when he got home.
It didn't matter if they believed him. He would always remember the day he met two pirates, and faced three gators.
