sound of clocks ticking soothes me. Nothing puts me to sleep faster than listening to the sound of tick tick tick from a clock. But, ah... Actually, cranks waste a good chunk of kinetic energy, well...some do. I'm sure there'd be ways to make it work better. But in general, two hours of cranking for about 30 minutes of power. I dunno. We'd appreciate what we have more! XD But, hey, I think a water-wheel in place of crank would be great. It turns, turning the cogs. Yeah, not too good during summer, when its drought...or winter when it freezes... But its a decent idea!
I'll have to upload my recent drawings. New dnd character of mine is an Arcane Mechanik... He gets clockwork robots with various engines, as well as the option to modify different weapons. My personal favorite was the "steam hammer" which didn't exactly use steam so much as hot coals. Ah well. It was cool. See, pressure plate on hammer head, when you hit with it, it pressed something, allowing a cog to turn, which opened vents on the side of the head. Inside the hammer head is a small furnace. Other side of the hammer has a vent for a little oxygen (to keep the fire burning.) Naturally the vents on the side that open would be angled in a way that the struck gets flamed. Obviously, though... The wielder stands chance of being infernoed.

Yea, you'd have to do it well to make it work, but I believe it could with some trial and error and alright, feel free to post the images here

Amossk Yea, not only is it green but it would be very cheep. And to boot it would be pretty awesome XD And yea, people don't see the potential in clockworks and steam. people are to lazy to get off their arses and turn a handle now and then. They'd rather pollute and spend money needlessly.
And for those of us with family members who ask us to grab the remote control for the telly when it's sitting a few inches away from them, we'll be the ones turning the crank all the time. XD
Re: clock sounds~ they put me to sleep too. It is very soothing. biggrin I'd much rather hear the sound of ticking clocks than my neighbours talking or people partying outside late at night.
Zenath has a good point about water-powered things during a drought. I live in a desert, so we are always having water restrictions and watching our usage, particularly during fire-danger 'season', as we'll need that to put out any sudden fires. So, although it's extra physical work, clockwork power would come in handy in places where water is scarce.

It's been my dream to build a town in the desert, a recreation of one, at least, with my personal observatory/fortress dominating the center...
And have an irrigation canal to supply water...
although I'm afraid I'd be too lonely...
But it would be glorious, with gears lining the main roads... ah...

Nothing wrong with being a hermit~ XD Hmm, steampunk in the desert would be interesting. It'd have to be similar to Wild Wild West, or maybe even Trigun. If you turned it into something like Las Vegas, you would never be lonely (and you'd also be rich). biggrin

Amossk Lily Darling Yes! Looking to go green? Why not go STEAM? (or clock! or both!) XD Also, I think cars should be turned into pedal cars, with pedals for every seat, that way everyone can contribute to powering it. You get your exercise and won't be dependent on oil anymore. Has anyone seen City of Ember? If not, I recommend it. It's pretty predictable plot-wise, but it's definitely got some steamy elements to it. The entire city is powered by a generator (I believe via waterworks, not steam). Yea, not only is it green but it would be very cheep. And to boot it would be pretty awesome XD And yea, people don't see the potential in clockworks and steam. people are to lazy to get off their arses and turn a handle now and then. They'd rather pollute and spend money needlessly. Ahem. I don't mean to be a party pooper, but if I remember correctly steam engines were powered by burning coal, which is also a fossil fuel and extremely dangerous to mine. The broilers would be absolutely unmanageable in a home setting not to mention a fire hazard. And the soot from a steam engine would send a lot of toxins into the air. So it's really not going green. Geothermal turbines, however are promising. But unfortunately, not everyone lives in an area with a lot of volcanic activity. (I do! XD) Incidentally, does anyone else find it ironic that they're clearing out the rain forest in order to get more farm land so that they can produce more crops for making ethanol?

But maybe I just play to much fallout XD And yea, that would be awesome. A steampunk version of Las Vegas. We could call it...Cogs Vegas! (i know, its a horrid name XP)
