Anita Blake is an "animator," which means she can raise the dead - she works for a firm that pimps her out for things like will discrepancies (don't know who gets what from daddy's estate? bring the b*****d back to life and ask!) and the occasional vampire staking.
The action and suspense are sharply written, and the characters are interesting and likable, even the cocky assholes like Jean-Claude. Especially Jean-Claude. Anita makes mistakes and has strong but stupid opinions sometimes, but like any human being she's always adapting her views and just trying to be a good person. She's dangerously close-minded at first, and is firmly against vamps and anything non-vanilla and non-monogamous, but if you read between the lines, you see her opinions start crumbling as she's drawn deeper into the darker themes of the books.
I especially love that characters appear completely two-dimensional and kind of one-track at first, but as Anita gets to know them, so do we. The author does an awesome job of writing the books from Anita's point of view, but provides enough between-the-lines hints of Anita's hidden feelings that you know she loves someone long before she does.
Anita's sense of humor is another attracting feature. She's had a lesbian vampire all up on her, trying to bite and trying to grope all at once, and she rolled her eyes and muttered 'gag me with a spoon' before trying to shoot her. She looks at the world the same way the reader does at times - as nagas and vampires struggle for rights and the right to vote, she's wtf'ing about all of it and shaking her head.
Anita is an awesome character when you peel away her layers. She's as controlled by her sex drive as the rest of us. She collects stuffed animal penguins to try and have some kind of normal comfort in her batshit life. She feels bad for the bad guys with sad stories but shoots them anyway if it's the only way she can live. She bleeds, bruises, and cries in the shower when things get worse, but she steps out of the shower with a gun in her hand and strives to face the world with all she has. But, again, she makes really bad mistakes all the time -- she's gotten people killed, she's been unable to save others, she's had to be saved herself.
It takes reading two books to get into it, because Anita is annoying until you get to know her.
@Mike: OMG READ THE FIRST BOOK b***h. It has Philip, the best male character EVER. He obviously doesn't make it out alive if he's not in the rest of the books, so it's not a spoiler to tell you he dies. XD And Anita totally loved him but all she did was hurt him over and over on purpose (hence her coming off as very annoying) because he used to be a vampire freak, and then getting him killed. BUT READ IT COS PHILIP IS WORTH IT.
Yaaaaaaaay new books. whee
I'll definitely have to look those up, yes. 3nodding I sometimes have to spend a few extra hours at work before Kat can come get me, so I have a lot of reading time now. <3

Sounds like a really interesting book. biggrin I'll have to get my a** over to the public library sometime soon and check some stuff out. <3
I'm reading a book called 'Nickel and Dimed' right now. Dunno if you've ever read it, but it's about a writer/reporter who takes an assignment to work minimum-wage jobs to kind of show how other people live.
That reminds me...
KAT??? Have you ever had to do the 'Wal-mart cheer?'
GIMME A W! GIMME AN A! GIMME AN L! GIMME A.... SQUIGGLY!!!!!
O_o please don't kill me.

Yaaaaaaaay new books. whee Well I have been reading the graphic novel versions of the books, and they encompass the first book so far so I don't feel as if I am missing much. D: My mind would get too scattered if I read the first one now, I'll do it when I decide to read them all again, as I believe... I believe she has finished writing the Anita Blake series for now?

O.o....I HATED doing that damn cheer. If you were one of the poor bastards clocking in early they'd catch you and make you get in their little Satanic circle.
It calls demons down to make the a*****e customers buy more crap and what not. 3nodding
You have to shimmy for the squiggly part. -_-;;
The only thing remotely like that at my bakery job is sometimes my manager Debbie belly bumps you. She also likes to call people over so she can fart on them. Tis very funny.
I saw the graphic novels....They're Marvel aren't they?
Which reminds me.... I really need to get on the ball with reading the Dark Tower series again. I keep getting distracted by all of King's new books... He shits one out like every month. Xp
I love how books are getting all comic-ified. Artemis Fowl is a graphic novel series now too. I'm waiting for Harry Potter to show up on Marvel's list, though.
Marvel and Harry Potter are in the same theme park at least now. Doom should go pose as a Death Eater and whip some a**....
And this is all related because I just got off work and they're literary characters and this is a book discussion and now I should probably put pants back on and go clean.
