Predictable, but unique... Fefnir thought, even as his strike was caught by Yuki, This is how it happened last time, but I'm more prepared to face her now than I was before. I won't give her a chance to defeat me so easily this time! Fefnir knew just how to counter Yuki's move this time, even though it was new, and didn't hesitate to do so. "Judgement! Tenchu Kaji Hitokage!" He called as he wrapped more reiatsu around his feet, bringing him to True Shukuchi level as his trapped blade quickly shortened.

The full sized katana shrank itself down to the size of a dagger, easily freeing itself from Yuki's grip by it's simple size reduction, and a large rush of energy swirled around it as Kaji's excess energy was funneled back into Fefnir's body, manifesting itself as fiery energy around Fefnir's feet taking the place of his own Reiatsu. Accordingly, Fefnir's legs wouldn't be burned by the heat bombardment Yuki was attempting since he was naturally protected from heat around his legs by the nature of his bankai release. He immediately leapt backward, totally invisible and spanning a large area in a matter of nanoseconds before calling, "Are you going to just lay there? I've released my bankai for you, so at least make it worth it!"

Yuki never had the chance to see Fefnir's bankai before, she didn't get the chance to train him for it, something she was regretting now. Like a piece of his training she had forgotten, That made her feel like such a bad teacher. She made a mental note not to make the same mistake twice with Amie. Quickly she moved into her own bankai state, not wanting to throw herself into the wind unarmed for power she didn't know.

"Burn the heavens.... Arthion."

She said, and firey wings erupted from her back, scorching all the plantlife around her. A Dragon's tail of fire ran down her spine to sprawl across the floor, with a great firey maw raised above her head to give her a second set of eyes. Her gauntlets lit on fire that trailed up her arms. She spread out the dragon wings to cover as much of the ground as she could so Fefnir wouldn't have anywhere to land without burning up to his hips. The Dragon's head looked up, surching for Fefnir among the field of fire.

Yuki herself had her eyes slammed shut to avoid vertigo of dubble vision, but kept her senses for his riatsu wide open. Hoping to find him and scorch him quickly.

Fefnir was circling, spiraling, never ceasing in his motion. He only had a limited amount of time in this state, so he'd need to act quickly, fires around him or not. Besides, what were a few minor burns compared to facing Yuki's bankai head on? It was amazing the level of speed even Fefnir's well-worn body was achieving, like he was seventeen again and at the top of his game. Maybe it was just how pumped he was to be seen as worthy of his teacher's final release, her strongest techniques, her greatest moves. He wouldn't disappoint her, not now.

Fefnir was moving much too fast to be see now, so much faster he couldn't even be compared to motion anymore. He was neither here nor there. He was everywhere and nowhere all at once. To be hit now by anything but chance was nearly an impossibility. But how many impossibilities had Yuki proven feasible before? Not to mention, even over the long time he'd had bankai, he'd not used it in actual combat conditions. Not only was this a terribly distinct disadvantage for him, but he'd trained and knew that he couldn't maintain this state for an extended amount of time, and would be done fro after that. His shikai didn't return once bankai was activated, so he'd be easily within Yuki's reach if he wanted to attack her, and neither did his reiatsu, so Shukuchi would be out of the question unless he wanted some serious injury to his already worn leg muscles. Still, he'd give it all he had for Yuki, because even in the heat of battle, he could feel her happiness at being almost normal again, and he didn't want her to stop enjoying herself. Not now.

He circled, moving in and out sporadically but making his way closer to her gradually. He was weaving in and out of his previous paths, making it harder and harder to spot his reiatsu amongst the remnants of his spiritual pressure. Even as he bobbed and weaved, jockeying for position to attack, the flames of Yuki's bankai were licking at his haori. Luckily, however, this fabric was treated so as to be fire retardant, and therefore didn't burn away. It still heated, however, and the touch of the rough fabric on his skin created patterned burns across his torso. Still, Fefnir was used to being burned, and wasn't bothered by this at all. Finally, as he approached his teacher, moving rapidly around her, he decided on his course of action: Fefnir was going to try to hit her in her main weapon, her legs, because then he would control the tide of this battle. So, a nanosecond later, Fefnir was striking at one leg, then the other, back and forth, from as many angles as he could, the came in from the front to try and deliver a kick into Yuki's stomach to finish his combo.

Yuki hardly had to move as Fefnir came closer for the attack. to support the dragon's huge weight she had to be almost prone, kneeling on the ground. It was a stupid move of his to think he could get at her legs. A flap of the massive wings scorched him as he attacked her sides, and as he came in for the finishing blow, the Dragon's head whipped downwards to bite at Fefnir's extended leg, breathing a little fire as it lowered it's head.

"Your facing the dragon now.... Don't think such cheep tricks will save you now."

With Fefnir's leg trapped in an extended position it was barely a foot from her chest. A glance at him through the dragon said 'oh, so close' with her usual cocky smile. She grabbed at his flaming foot, her fire immunity playing into effect to make it feel like she was reaching into warm liquid to grab his foot. She raised her other arm out to the side, and started to transfer the heat of his leg, the fire and all, away from him. She couldn't drain all the heat of the fire, but his internal temperature would drop insanely fast, even with the external fire to warm him.

Aw, s**t.... The thought was already in Fefnir's mind as he made the last move of his strike. The imposing presence of the dragon had hidden Yuki's core form, causing him to think she was upright rather than bent over. Once he'd gotten in closer, his mistake was easy to see, but he hadn't left himself any time to correct it before Yuki could react, and react she did. That huge dragon head twisted down and latched onto his leg with a sickening squishing sort of sound, and there he was, hanging like a fish in the market, just waiting to be carved up. However, instead of simply clawing him open like he'd expected, she grasped his leg through the fire, and suddenly Fefnir started to feel very... cold? It was like her touch was stealing his strength (his strength coming from the heat he constantly surrounded himself with) and his leg immediately started to lock up as it's life-giving warmth was taken away. The feeling was rapidly spreading upward in his body as well, so Fefnir would have to act quickly, even through his blinding pain.

The only problem? She'd basically disabled him already. His leg was trashed: he'd never be able to run on it after this, at least not until he'd been to squad four. It was also rapidly cooling, so what little mobility he might have had would be out the window. Thus, the only thing Fefnir could think to do in order to salvage his torn appendage was to concede.

"I give up!" he yelled over the crackling flames all around him, "Yuki, I give up! Let me go!"

In her own insanity Yuki herself would have kept going. But her Zanpacto spirit in it's nobility would never let her continue a fight with an opponent who so blatantly stated his defeat. An internal struggle for what felt like an eternity, but really lasted hardly a second, flicked across her eyes as the inferno of a dragon head dropped Fefnir to the ground, against Yuki's will.

"Wait! What are you doing!?"

"The battle is over."
"It can't be! Fefnir is stronger than this! I trained him better!"

"It's over...."

Yuki argued with her zanpacto internally for a moment before she too let go of his leg and let the warmth return to him. Arthion forced her out of bankai as she fell to her knees, tears streaming down her face in anger and loss at her moment of solitude being over so quickly. She hit the ground in furry as cold reality returned to her. Even the aches of the battle, her bruised and battered ribs, her lightly bleeding shoulder, where not enough to insulate her from reality and all it's harshness.

After several moments of beating the ground, her knuckles started to bleed, and she wiped her tears away with her bloodied hands, leaving stain marks across her face as if her tears where more than simply saltwater. She looked up to where Fefnir lay, she couldn't think of anything to say to him, even though she knew she had to say something.

As Fefnir lay there on the ground, he just couldn't think. Something just made it hard to do anything, whether it was the horrid pain in his leg or the knowledge that he'd been unable to do anything more to help Yuki was debatable. His mind alongside his body seemed to be stuck, with just one word swirling through it: "Failure..."

His head turned just enough to show him the frustration Yuki now had no outlet for boiling over, and she bloodied her knuckles on the ground, tears streaming down her face. No...I couldn't help her after all... he thought with regret, How can I even call myself her friend if I can't help her when she needs me...

There was a long pause between the two as the worries and troubles Yuki had escaped flooded back to her. Fefnir broke it by saying, ".............I'm sorry, Yuki........ I failed you,"
PostPosted: Fri Apr 17, 2009 2:18 am

Just as Fefnir started to speak Yuki hit the ground with her fist particularly hard, making a sickening crunch as some of her fingers snapped out of place from the force of the hit, cutting off what he was about to say. She glared up at him in her frustration.

"Don't you ever tell me your sorry! Don't you EVER think your a failure! I. Trained. You. Better."

She shouted, her voice hoarse with rage and frustration. Yuki tried to get across so much more meaning than what she said, unable to say everything she wanted to; That his failure meant hers as well. That saying sorry showed weakness she refused to accept in either Fefnir or herself, and so much more. She bit back tears, only because she was staring at him and she refused to show him weakness, trying to set one more example for him even though he was no longer her student.

Fefnir opened his mouth to answer her, to deny his worth, to proclaim his uselessness, but any reply died in his throat. His heart was beating hard in his chest, squeezing him, choking him, making it hard to breath, much less speak. With the anguish she was trying to hide peeking through her stalwart expression, he knew that he could say nothing to contradict her. It just wasn't in him to do any more to hurt her, be it emotionally or physically.

"Captain..." He finally managed to force out, and that only from force of habit, "Please, Captain... keep going. Hit me until you feel better, until you can forget about things for a while. Hurt me so that I'll know something of what you feel. Just... please... don't keep it to yourself, where I can't help you..."

Yuki looked back to the ground, a cruel smile stretching across her face as Fefnir demanded to be beaten until death. Blood dripped from her face, and hands for a moment before she stood, snapping her fingers back into place with sickening cracks. She hardly even flinched, once more she was numb from the inside. She walked over to where Fefnir lay, immobile and pitiful. She grabbed a fistful of his hair and tilted his head back, painfully exposing his neck, so she looked him right in the eyes, her eyes numb and the smile cold.

"I could never inflict the pain I feel by hitting you."

The pressure she put in the word 'you' implying that she was talking about someone really close to his heart, and that even then he wouldn't understand the pain. She let his hair go and kept walking with a determined and stiff stride as she picked up her captain's cloak and put it back on. She let her shoulder bleed through the white mark of first squad and her knuckles stain the sleeves edges with her dark red blood.

With only the slightest of flinches, Fefnir allowed her to pull his head back, presenting his throat to her like an offering, a sacrifice of blood. She was smiling, but it just wasn't the same; the look in her eyes was like that of a corpse, empty and unfeeling. It was a look he recognized immediately, but one that looked foreign, totally out of place on Yuki's visage. He expected her to strike, to end him, and he was content with that knowing he'd done his all to help her, but instead, he got a cryptic reply.

"I could never inflict the pain I feel by hitting you."

She let him drop, and as soon as she let go, his own frustration at the weakness he'd displayed and his inability to be of any use to his friend surged out in saddened words. "Then how can I help you? I'll do anything for your sake, just tell me! Please... tell me how to help you..."

Fefnir quickly wiped at his eyes, feeling them begin to burn, as if he were about to cry, but he wouldn't cry now. Not in front of his captain Yuki, nor his friend Yuki, and especially not in front this hollow version of the woman he respected more than any other person in the world. A few raindrops began to fall in the field, a storm that he hadn't seen coming because of his worry. Hmph... how fitting an end for this sorrowful day...

Yuki pulled her captain's cloak close to her as it started to rain. Looking up she sighed, letting the rain wash away the worst of the blood on her face and hands. She brushed back her hair against the oncoming rain so it wouldn't hang in her face. She turned back to Fefnir, eyes cold as ever, she expected to see him at least standing, only to be disappointed in him once more as he lay on the ground like some great useless thing.

"Get up..."

She said, sounding cold and demanding, especially of someone who's leg she almost ripped off almost two seconds ago. She turned her back to him one last time, obviously uncaring of the damage she inflicted to him or thinking he could do better than that, and began to walk away.

After receiving the hell butterfly Envy started to make her way to where it had came from since it would be pointless to just get a bed ready for a dead man. Seriously, if he was dead how was he going to get to the bed in the first place? She doubted if whoever killed him would drop him off in the squad, but hey, if they were lucky he wouldn't die to begin with.

Coming into the clearing she sighed as the two other captains came into view and she shunpo'd next to the one laying on the ground covered in blood. "Need help, Fefnir?"
PostPosted: Sat Apr 18, 2009 1:26 am

At first, Fefnir didn't register that Envy was even there. It seemed like nothing in the world mattered to him at the moment, and it wasn't until several seconds later that he absentmindedly gave her a yes. Call it denial, but he refused to accept that the person in front of him was in fact Yuki. The Yuki he knew was harsh yet reasonable, strong and composed, but this.... this wasn't her. This was some impostor making a mockery of the friend he once knew. Thus, he resigned himself to being healed for now, and he resolved to find the cause of all of this trouble. He would destroy what was making Yuki so different, and he would set things right again, no matter what.
