Devi chuckled. "If I can get away with wearing a "cowboy" costume last year and going to Prom as a unicorn I think you're fine." He still had photos out from both parties. And still got pinched cheeks from his mum for them.
"Perhaps you should be a druidess? An emerald colored cloak and a few trinkets and you've got the part nailed." He grinned, taking another sip of his tea.
"That's not an impolite question at all. I'm a fa'e. All fa'e are different, one of my best friends happens to be a white stag and my girlfriend has purple hands a draconic wings from her back. There are parties we hold. I know I'm helping organize a small thing for Halloween. We're renting a small "village" north of barton to hold a sort of joint celebration. One circle of two will have Day of the Dead and the other, my part, will be a Ren Faire. People will be free to walk betwixt the two to go trick-or-treating. It's going to be amusing seeing as how fa'e are all ages. I'm sure my mother knows a few others in town if you're curious. She doesn't exactly blend with a crowd either."

Leaning forward, bread forgotten, Elle listened carefully and nodded. "Fa'e...I've heard the term before, applied to a broad category of beings! Considering the descriptions of those dear to you, it seems to be a fairly accurate description! There are those of us that share a tie as well, but I'm not sure if we have a name that binds us together."
Elle thought about it a moment longer, remembering Aki's story about the mirror. "Many of us arrived through a tie we shared, a bond to a Shattered mirror. If I find a better way of explaining it, I can tell you the tale another time!"
She was greatly amused at Devi's choice of costumes, though, and nodded at his costume idea for her. "That would be a fun costume, you're right. Perhaps I should try something totally new, as well! I know I have a few places the younglings would like to go, but after that I'm going to search for something closer to my speed. Babies are lovely, but I don't think I could get into a festive state of mind while watching out for them, you know?"
Finally finishing her bread, Elle took another sip of the tea and stretched. The sun had shifted, warming her legs as it dappled through the trees. "I wish you the best at your event. If you need help catering, I'm usually free!"

"That makes sense enough to me. After all, Fa'e are born of dreams and wants for old souls to return. It doesn't seem that unlikely that life could spring from a mirror if it could spawn from what created the likes of me. And we are all quite different, but in a sense also very similar. An interesting duplicity."
He smiled, wondering what other things she might choose to be. "If you'd like, we have a store room of odd outfits at the Hollow. You might find something to your likings there."
The thought of her coming up to join the festivites was not a bad one at all. Rather it seemed good. "I might just take you up on that, though you'd come as a guest. I've babysat a few other fa'e and understand how tiring it can be. Besides, you have to get your own fun in and there are plenty of others about our age that will be atending. I'll make sure there's a place saved for you. The villiage is actually a bunch of little cabins in a sort of figure eight configuration. All have beds and baths and food will be plentiful enough in it's own right. I'll make sure to save you a cabin if you'd like."

Elle loved cabins. Most people were willing enough to sleep outside, but she felt a little lost under that vast dark sky. It was too similar to the darkness she'd waited in for so long. "Oh, I hadn't meant to invite myself! I'm sorry, I was trying to offer to lend a hand. I'd be honored to stop by, though...and a corner to rest in would be great!"
It was getting warm on the bank, in the patch of sun they rested in. Elle rinsed the cup after finishing her cool tea, shaking it to dry before handing it back to Devi with a smile and a nod. Slipping her feet back into the cool water, she rested her weight back on her elbows as she reclined on the bank.
"It is interesting, isn't it? Such a quiet and peaceful land, yet so full of diverse beings! My single and deepest hope..." She rolled her head to the side, sharing a serious look with her new companion. Her smile was still in place, but it had changed...a thin press of hope and worry. "...is that such a peace can remain."
She had nightmares, sometimes, about the world she left behind. The world she had failed. Faint memories, cries and faces...she couldn't remember it clearly, but it was enough to make her strive for something better, every day she walked these lands. Sighing, letting the tension go with a more genuine smile, Elle relaxed again.
"And you? Surely, an old soul brought to light once more, you have a path to walk?"

The teen smiled and waved a dismissive hand at the apologies. "You dind't invite yourself. I did. So none of that. And I'll save you the cabin next to mine. Fair warning though, it's a true mask with no one showing their face until the end. I might also not appear the same even in bodily form. I've seen a magister about a potion, enough to last a day and a night at a time, to turn me human. So, I'll be bipedal like most of the others, and there fore not so easily found out."
The sun was nice enough, and a tail full of water to flick over himself kept him happy on the bank. It was not so easy for him to dip his toes in the water.
"I hope it lasts too, theough Chaos does try. Still, we keep enough peace in our lives and that can spread like ripples to the whole, don't you think?"
Her last question brought memories to mind. Yes, he did have a path. A path that forked soon but he already knew the path he'd follow. "I do, and the path divides before me and I choose to travel the one best suited to me. I know parts of what will be just by my choices, but the adventure is in the not knowing. The perfect story is the one that keeps you thinking til the end." There was a spark in his eye, very much like the twinkling of a star. There was something both ancient and new in that gilnt.

Elle's smile grew, blossoming from what Devi had seen into her true and honest grin. Teeth surprisingly white against her tanned skin, Elle shook her hair back again and laughed. "All too true, and I love a good story! I have a few of those to share as well!"
She let the rest of his story sink in, already thinking of a costume. "If I make it, I'll be sure to wear something appropriate. That's an impressive potion you speak of, though...I cannot do anything so radical! If you have any ill after effects, however, I'd be glad to help!"
She didn't mean to doubt the power of the potion he would be working with, but side effects of strong brews were universally common. That was one of the reasons she stuck with minor mixes...sometimes the cure was worse!
"The way you mentioned Chaos, though...do you speak of something other than disaster and ill luck? It seems as though you're all too familiar..."

"I'd love to hear a few. There are too few good storytellers for all the wonderful tales. And if you can find a costume to one of your tales at the Hollow I'll make sure you get it if you'd like. There's too much stored there to begin with."
He thought about her offer. The magister was very good with his work. But taking the potion a few nights in a row would undoubtedly lead to stomach upset at least. "I believe I'll keep you in mind for that. Probably best."
The smile faltered a bit, loosing just a touch of the warmth as he thought abou Chaos. "I don't know what it is to the rest of the world, but I've seen it as an agressive being. It's almost the embodiment of discord. Not often, but enough it does come into the picture. But not enough to really worry me too greatly about the festivities." After last time he'd gotten sharper with his arrows and more controled with his memories. It would not make easy game of him twice.

Elle simply listened, noting the change in both his expression and mood. Ah, a dark subject, then. Nothing she wished to make him dwell on. "I see! I'll take that into mind when I prepare...I'm not used to hearing of the force so personified. It's not that strange, but unfortunate."
She'd known something similar, before. Not the same, but she'd surely seen the effects. So, this world had its shadows as well? Giving her head half a shake, Elle twisted her hair back with one hand and took the warning to heart. She had a long path ahead of her, it seemed.
"I feel a bit silly about putting so much thought into a costume, but I want it to be a good memory!" Changing the subject a bit, she flicked her gaze back up to Devi's wise young face. "It will be quite the challenge to find you! I'm looking forward to it."
Their meal was finished, and the knotgrass had long since fallen still. Taking a long breath, soaking in the air and sun of a beautiful fall day, Elle wiggled her toes a bit in the water. "Are you in a hurry, Devi? I don't mean to keep you. If you wish to continue gathering as we talk, I'd be happy to join you!"

"Not many do. Don't worry about it. For the event, it's unlikely anything will happen. Best to think about the good while having a store of arrows for the bad. It's a way to keep yourself relatively sane."
The mention of costume hunting made the centaur smile. "Costumes are funny things. We think we're shedding ourselves when we're just putting another facet forward. People are like gems, faceted in ways that can confound in any new light, casting an eternal rainbow of shades and never once repeating."
A sigh of contentment left him. "I am on no one's time but my own, and the only time I rush is when there is a great field to span and a cloud to chase. I have no one to meet and would be more than happy to continue gathering with you if you'll have my company a while longer."

Rolling over a bit on her side, propping her head up in the palm of one hand, Elle nodded in slightly bemused agreement. She rarely had the opportunity to have such conversations...most of her companions either drooled, or were too busy cleaning up said drool!
"Yes! I know exactly what you mean! I find myself in the stories I tell, no matter how outlandish or fantastic they might be. It seems no matter how uniquely we strive to present ourselves, we are simply revealing another aspect of our true beings! And often, it's something we don't wish to acknowledge, but if you look deep enough..."
Shrugging, Elle pushed lightly to her feet...brushing down her drying skirt. "...it's there!" She held one hand out to offer to help Devmani up, smiling at the silly gesture, but offering nonetheless.
"Ah, and my apologies if I flashed you earlier, as you came 'round the bend. I'd been expecting something a bit different." There was no trace of a blush, Elle had no problem with nudity, and didn't figure she'd actually offended Devmani by a flash of panties. Regardless, it was best to be polite!

The smile was back full force with a pleasant laugh to boot. "Too true." Giving a mock bow he took her hand as he stood.
At the mention of flashing though he shrugged. "Honestly, I don't get the whole clothes thing. Yeah they're warm when it gets cold out but when I'm like this, in my true form I just don't feel the chill. They're... odd. It's like artificial skin. But if it suits you, the better for you. So long as you don't mind being around a naked centaur I think we'll be fine." It was clear he was trying not to laugh. Not like he had anythign to stare at anyway!

"I've never understood the fuss either! Unless you're trying to keep off the frost or sun, it seems a bit trying to constantly adorn yourself. All well, though...if it makes others happy, and gets me into the glass shop, I'll do it."
Sharing an amused smile, Elle braced and pulled...sure she wasn't actually being of any help, but enjoying trying anyway. Once Devmani was on his feet again, she tossed the knotgrass into the basket and slipped it over one arm.
"At the mention of differences, I had another subject in mind. Again, if it's rude or none of my business, brush it aside." She wasn't sure how the lad would react, but she felt it best to mention. "We all have different paths, and different...abilities...to help us walk them. Without any effort, I can pick up strong emotions from most people I'm near. With a little effort, I can search a bit deeper. Unless I'm worried for a friend, or very very curious, I don't push. Just mild empathy, if you're familiar with the term. However, I honor all requests not to 'push', and only a little effort will block me completely. I'm not sure if you care, but I dread that someday I'll find someone that it does matter to, and..."
She left the rest hanging. Everyone feared the loss of their loved onces, it wasn't something unique to Elle. Offering him a hopeful smile, Elle gave a tiny shrug. "Well. That was just a little definition to support my question. Aside from your beauty and wit, may I ask how you are blessed, Devi?"

"Thank heavens you have sense!" He did laugh at that, gently lifting the arm Elle dangled from a moment before lightly setting her down again.
His expression took an entirely confused appearance when she started talking about empathy. He understood it and had researched it a while back. Whern she mentioned his "beauty and wit" though his face tinged pink and he looked decidedly embarassed.
"Ah ... well... I guess you could say I have a sort of control over the ground. WHen I stomp down hard, or with a specific intent I can make the earth move in different ways. I know there's something else too but I can't remember what it is yet and the power is playing a rather rude game of hide and seek in my memories."
Chuckling he pulled a small wooden figuring from his stachel as he slung it over his shoulder. "This I made a time ago when I was a child. I understand wood and how it works. Not a magical gift or anything like that, just a talent I like to spend time on." The figurine was of a woman wearing a Greek toga and holding a bow at the ready. On her back a quiver stood full and antlers seemed to sprout from either her headband or her head itself.

Elle flashed a smile with a hint of teeth as Devi flushed, surprised he took her comment as flattery rather than accepting it as truth. A good head on his shoulders, and untainted by ego? She was impressed!
Back on her feet, basket in hand, Elle fell into step beside the tall centaur. Her gaze dropped to the grass, littered with autumn, leaves as he spoke. "What a wonderful thing! To be able to shape like that! Your statue..."
Raising a finger, Elle let her hand travel near the figurine as though she wished to stroke it, but she never quite let herself touch it. It might be too personal, or too delicate...just a reach was enough. She pulled her hand back with a smile. "...is amazing. Made when you were just a child?"
Peering a bit closer, amber eyes focusing, Elle tilted her head a bit. "Do you know who it is? She's beautiful!" The tiny details, right down to the fletching on the arrows...Elle sighed in appreciation of a lovely form, and beautiful work. She had no hand for art, only brewing and body work!

He grinned, a bit of color still on his face. "Thank you. Back then I dind't know who she was, now I do. Her name is Artemis. Have you ever heard of her?"
If she had there would be many stories to tell and relate. He took a small amount of pride in his wood crafting. A small chunk of log that no one else saw as useful became a friend of sorts, slowly shedding it's layers to reveal a hidden treasure, only to return to the earth gain someday. A fitting cycle.
