Unfortunately, he had forgotten quite what to say what a starmaker was. His friend stared at him more than a little blankly, her huge blue eyes dark and inky with complete non-comprehension -- and then two bright pink spots appeared in her cheeks.
Bafflingly, she erupted: "Moonglow?!"

He blinked. Then blinked again. Then said, quite incredulously, "What in the hell are you talking about, girl? I said I was a starmaker. A. Star. Maker. Which only works in pairs, by the way, and not in ANY way I'm going to show you, you should know right now."

Wisp scratched at her head, looking about as baffled as Chris did, and the usual Wisp fallback -- "Wait, I don't understand."

He hesitated, then looked forward as he started to explain. "There's an infinite number of stars out there," he told her. "And as far as anyone can tell the universe is getting larger and larger all the time. But there's a reason for it."
He leaned back, falling onto his back with his head resting on his hands. "Starmakers are aliens. They usually come in pairs, a male and a female, and instead of having babies, they have, well... stars. It's an energy thing, see?"

Her eyebrows had shot up into her hairline again and she was hugging her knees to her chest -- balancing a little on the warm tiles, leaning back to that she was stretching back in a V-curve, thinking hard about it. "Wow," she said. "You seriously have -- stars up in the sky? Like, the stars that are huge burning balls of gas and flame and stuff -- I mean they probably don't look like that when they come out -- that sounds gross."

"Not like that," he muttered, flushing brightly. "It's like they give off this energy which tells the universe that it's time for another star. Like a catalyst energy, you know? Like flipping a switch. And every once in a while instead of a star, another starmaker is created, who usually falls to a planet fully grown and ********'--" he stopped, covering the cabbage with his hands as if covering its ears.
"I mean, freakin' huge," he muttered. "Three times bigger than I am."

Wisp slowly laid herself back on the tiles again, looking up at the sky and shading her eyes against the glare of the sun. "Wow," she said eventually. "It makes you feel pretty tiny, right? Wow. Okay, I'm going to record how I feel right now."
She was already flipping over onto her stomach and was publically desecrating one of the roof tiles; her fingers moved in wide, graceful swoops, and once she reached out to touch Chris as though she could smear the colour for him -- the picture appeared to be nothing so much as Chris hang-tenning a star up in the sky, but whatever made her happy. "Wow," she said. "How do you feel?"

"I've known it for a while," he admitted. "But it kind of settled in when I met Acheron. He's a real a**, you know, but... awesome," he admitted. "You wanna hear him?" he added, pulling out what looked to be a hummer version of an ipod, made for wear and tear.

Wisp tilted her head up in the age-old gesture of, gimme the headphones!, her finger still working at the tile. She had bafflingly added "RORY <3s CHRIS," on the one beside it, but was busy outlining her entire picture -- whatever you could say about Wisp, and you could say a lot, she was no slouch at. Well. Graffiti.

He handed over the headphones, raising an eyebrow at her graffiti but too used to it to really say anything. Other than, "You know we're going to hear from my Dad about this, don't you?"

"Yep," said Wisp, shifting the headphones a little with her free hand. "Maybe he'll say 'Wisp that was so pretty now please clean it off,' and I'll say 'that's okay Mr. Deakon, because just for a little while the roof looked SOOO AWESOME and inspired people to freak out and be wild, and that's what I do to boring rooftops.'"

He snorted. Knowing his dad, it probably was exactly what he'd say. "When my sister's born," he said. "Could you, I don't know, not draw on her?"

"Man you are asking a big ask there," said Wisp solemnly, and put her initials on the drawing just in case Tyler wouldn't know immediately who'd done it anyway -- her little callsign, a rainbow and a W. "A huge ask. Okay, I promise not to draw on your little sister when she's not a cabbage UNLESS she asks, and then I can promise nothing, because. That's fair, right?"
She was listening to the music on the headphones, and after a while she said: "This is cool, yo."
