It took a moment for Darsh to realize that Fish had already started the tantrum. This was both good and bad. It was good because he knew Fish wouldn't sell him out and go color on the paper instead of finishing their watery paradise on the nice big wall. It was bad because Fish was rapidly stealing his thunder and that was never good. But solidarity won out and Darsh opened his mouth wide as well and started to howl. "Gimme my crayon!" He stomped his foot on the floor and started crying as well. "GIMME MY CRAYON BACK!"
Oh no. Oh nonono. The substitute flinched. She already had a headache and two screaming boys was not going to make it any better. She looked around the crowded room for some backup, but it appeared that it was just her. The main teacher must have stepped out for a minute.

Even as he was continuing his own tantrum, Fish reflected that Darsh was much better at throwing a fit than he was. He simply lacked the desire to scream at the top of his lungs. He'd rather sob and hiccup and make himself sick. Which he did. It was verging on hyperventilating now, really. Some kind of defense mechanism. The substitute was mean! So mean! She had taken the crayons and she hadn't given them back!

"Thats it." No more mrs. nice sub. "Timeout for both of you." She grabbed Darsh and Fish roughly by the wrists with suprising strength and dragged them to the "timeout corner". "Now you, sit here." And she plopped Fish into a little plastic chair facing the wall. "And you, here." And she plopped the still-screaming Darsh into another chair. "And you'll both stay there until I say you can move. Otherwise I'll call your parents and tell them to come and get you because you're being bad."
"GIMME MY CRAYON!" Darsh was still in the whole tantrum groove, he wasn't quite ready to give it up yet. At least not until the woman was gone and he could sneak out of the corner and find something better to do.

Fish wasn't quite sure what had just happened, but he was now in a chair in this mysterious place called 'time-out'. All he knew for sure was that he did not like it one bit. He wanted to get out, but first he needed to calm down. Crying had obviously not done him any good. Fish hiccuped his way into silence and then tried to reassess the situation.
Doing his best imitation of an international secret agent, he inched his hand over until he could poke at Darsh's dangling fingers, something he proceeded to do.
"Got an idea?" he whispered.

Sniffling, he looked over at Fish with a sense of comraderie. They were, after all, being incarcerated together. Darsh nodded his head very slowly, then glanced back over his shoulder at the retreating nursery assistant. She had knelt down to help a couple little girls with a puzzle, but she kept shooting poisonous glances their way. Fine then.
"Here." Sneakily, Darsh pulled a couple of crayons from the waistband of his pants. He had an orange one and a brown one and he magnanimously offered Fish first choice of the colors. "We'll make a new world here until she stops looking."

Fish took the orange crayon because he liked its bright hue. He pondered the wall in front of him for a moment. It was a blank canvas with so many possibilities! He looked over his shoulder and saw the teacher was still distracted, and then began work on a creature that looked like it had five legs, one of which looked to be connected to its head, and enormous ears.
"'S a elephant," he explained quietly to Darsh. "'Saw one in a book."

It could be that Darsh had seen the same book, as he started with a blob that had possibly four legs and what was supposed to be an extremely long neck with a tiny head on top. He added spots. "S' a giraffe." He whispered back. "They go with elephants. His name is Harold."

Fish pointed to the elephant he had drawn and tried to think of a name. The one in the book had be Babar, but he needed something more original to make his elephant different. "'S name's Robby."
This was a very fine name for an elephant, if he did say so himself.
So they had an orange elephant and a brown giraffe. Fish studied the scene, brow furrowed in concentration.
"They're friends," he said finally.

"Like us!" Darsh responded, pleased. He beamed at Fish and then frowned at the wall. "We need more colors." He added. While an orange elephant and a brown giraffe were great, they needed something to do. Or minions to boss around. Or, at the very least, a watering hole.

"We do," agreed Fish mournfully. He looked back over his shoulder at the substitute, but she was still close enough to them that she would definitely notice if they made a break for it.
"I don't like her," he whispered conspiratorially. School had seemed like so much fun until she showed up.

"Me neither." Darsh whispered back, glaring over his shoulder at the sub. "Hey! I'll run real fast an' grab some more colors. You watch the meanie-face and make sure she doesn't see. Kay?"

"Okay," replied Fish, nodding. Darsh was so cool! He craned his neck to watch meanie-face and waited eagerly for more colors.

Despite the fact that his skintone made him highly noticeable, Darsh had the benefit of not really caring if he got caught. He also wanted to show off for his new friend and so he dashed over to the art corner and rummaged around in the bins before dashing back to the time-out chairs. "Got them!" He beamed, pulling out their new treasure. Even better than crayons, he'd managed to score a box of water-based markers.

"Oooh," whispered Fish, eyes going wide at the site of the markers. He reached into the package and selected a green one. He drew what looked like an oversized stalk of broccoli.
"I think elephants an' giraffes eat trees," he said quietly.

Taking the blue marker, Darsh nodded. "I think thats right." He drew a blue blob near the base of the broccoli stalk. "And they need water to drink. And the tree does too."
