"It is," he nodded. "They find us more useful when we're older. But everyone starts out somewhere around eleven. Maybe a bit older or younger. I was ten at the beginning."
He leaned against the window frame and took all the information in. Eros, huh? Another Greek, then.
"Who else have you met?" he asked, just trying to get a feel for how much she knew. "Were you inducted by Miss Floros? Or by Anubis?"
It was funny to think that this girl was genuinely older than him, as opposed to Writ, who only looked older, and yet he was genuinely more mature than her.

"Miss Floros, I think. I can't remember her name. I was....oh, like, 9 when I got this." She held up her left arm to show the glove glittering against her skin. "I met....Hold on now...." She quirked her lips, trying to remember them. "There was a circus boy with a scarf--he was so cute--and a Hawaiian boy. He and I ate all of the cookies I made that day." What were their names? It was aggravating that she couldn't remember. Oh yeah! "Diogenes and Keahi." She nodded. "I knew they seemed...young, but I didn't think much about it." With a tinge of wistfulness, she remarked, "You seem to know a lot about it."

Fish shrugged. The fat hawaiian kid sounded familiar, but not Diogenes. But it was good to know he was out there somewhere, for future reference. "I've been living this for two years, and knowledge is half the battle."
Dwayne finally came back. He leaned against the frame next to Fish and held a paper bag out for Shiri. It was folded over at the top. "Everything's in here," he said.

Shiri laughed. "Explains why I've been bench warming." She turned a smile on Dwayne when he appeared. "Thank you so much!" She murmured, taking the bag from him and placing it carefully in her messenger pack. "I guess business is done. Nice meeting you, Fish." She stuck out a hand again. Maybe he would take it this time. It had seemed like a pleasant enough conversation.
And all through it, her god had refused to comment. He must have been very busy or very immature. He hadn't even deigned to warn her away from Fish or even from the wandering out of doors. Shiri felt concerned and more than a little hurt. But that problem was not present, just yet. She had to finish the transaction with social niceties.

"Uh, yeah," said Fish, shaking her hand. Really, he thought, she didn't seem like much of a threat at all.
"Flirting with the customers?" asked Dwayne, giving him a sidelong glance.
"No," said Fish, turning a bit red. "Just keeping them occupied because you take so damn long."

Shiri's grin widened when he took her hand and she heard their banter. Ah....So that's what it was. "I enjoyed it." She turned her attention to Dwayne. "And you don't have anything to worry about." She pulled her hand from Fish's smiling at the pair, reading subtext and footnote of blush, comment, and her own instinct. 'I wouldn't have thought it....'

"I take 'so damn long' because I'm doing my job right," retorted Dwayne, but he managed to say it in a way that didn't sound incredibly pissed off. He smiled at Shiri. "Thanks for buying from us," he said.
Fish waved to her, trying to be nonchalant and get the color to go out of his cheeks. "Ah, um, see you around." She knew. She definitely knew. Either this was dangerous or she thought it was supremely inappropriate. s**t. s**t.

Shiri laughed a little bit at Fish's flustered appearance. She thought it was admirable. He seemed quite mature for his age. He was no ordinary child, after all. One could not judge the non-human with human standards. To Dwayne she merely said, "I'll pass on the thanks to my parents."
She gave Fish an indulgent smile and bent to whisper conspiratorially, "Love is love. I should know, remember?" She tapped her forehead, then waved them goodbye. "Have a good rest of the day!" She tentatively put her foot out and when it was met by solid iron stair, she relaxed, ready to begin her slow, cautious descent down.
