"Mmmrrraagghhh," Kella grumbled, turning her face into her pillow. Her fist fumbled blindly for the edge of her sleeping furs. The young girl pulled them up over her head in an attempt to block out both the streaming sunlight, and the noise beginning to rouse her. "I just want to sleep, a few more minutes," the girl complained to her pillow, pushing herself up so that she was leaning on her elbows. With everyone rising around her, Kella knew she should get up to. The thought of touching the eggs encouraged her.

Some girl whose bunk was next to Kella's prattled and rambled away as the girls got themselves dressed. "Are you excited?" The other girl asked as Kella shoved her feet into her boots. "Shells, obviously!" Kella said with an exasperated sigh. That was the dumbest question, Kella thought to herself. Dimglow, she mentally insulted the girl, rolling her eyes as she walked past the girl on her way to the door. Who wouldn't be excited?!

The sands were hot, ridiculously so. Kella would tell people later that she was sweating even before she entered the cavern that housed the two queen's and their clutches. But, Kella was prone to making things a tad dramatic~ all for attention. She did begin to sweat, though it was not until a few moments after she entered the grounds. Perspiration beaded on her forehead and Kella wiped it away with her forearm before bowing to both of the Queens. Were girls supposed to curtsy, instead? Kella scowled at the idea. She'd look stupid curtsying. She was not very girly, and she'd do anything to prove it.

Moving off away from everyone else, Kella meandered at he own pace throughout the enormous clutch. The queens did not seem to be separating their eggs from one another. Rather, they both seemed to be brooding over the entire clutch, as a whole. Kella avoided looking at the golden mothers, lounging languidly with their hawk-like eyes following the candidates around. It made her uncomfortable! But she wouldn't let those big momma's scare her out of here! Not just yet, anyway.

Kella stopped at one of the eggs, it's mottled brown splotches catching her eye. The Masai Giraffe egg looked kind of silly, as though it were protecting the smaller eggs clustered around it. Kella like that; that the egg seemed ready to protect its siblings. The young girl made her way towards that egg, her fingers outstretched to just brush the shell. She tingled with excitement, goosebumps jumping up into her skin along her arms and neck. "Whoa," she said, eyes gleaming brightly with excitement and awe. The presence of the other candidates was pushed to the back of her mind as she spent a bit of time with this egg.

After having gotten over the furry look the egg in front of him bore, Nathail got the courage up to touch the smooth shell. Of course, like he thought the furry look was only an illusion form the patterns over them, and they weren't furry at all. He very lightly strokes the shell before backing away to let other candidates over to the egg. He wasn't going to be like those bulkier ones and claim an egg to keep anyone else from touching it.

A glance over and he spies the egg's seeming "twin" and steps closer to the smaller one. "Just as impressive as the larger was." Ha, there size didn't matter at all. How about that.

When the candidate masters call came, Reyalt was already wide awake. He was, in fact, already halfway out of bed before the rough voice had even finished echoing off the stone walls of the candidate’s barracks. It wasn’t from excitement, no, but from a queasy sort of apprehension, a tightening in his chest that had been growing ever since the Touching was announced some days previous. He wasn’t scared, Reyalt thought grimly for the umpteenth time in days. But, groping for a better word to describe the nerves that were now jangling throughout his body, he drew a blank.

Still curled up in a neat ball on the bed, Miri murmured slightly as his movements began to disrupt her sleep. Reyalt grinned as he watched his little green tuck her tail more securely around her body. Several weeks out of the shell now, the young flit still spent most of her time eating and sleeping - and growing. Wrinkling his nose in amusement as a dream caused her to twitch, Reyalt left her there on the bed. He was confident that the meal she had gorged on last night would be enough to keep her asleep until he returned.

Although sleep and disheveled, most of the candidates were on tenterhooks by the time they made it to the hatching grounds - and Reyalt was no exception. The hot sands under his feet were an added shock, no matter how much he had known to expect them. His attention did not stay long on his scorched soles, however, as the candidates spread themselves out in the widening space, and the two Queens became visible.

‘Becoming visible’ wasn’t quite the right phrase - the two dragons fair overwhelmed Reyalt’s view. His throat suddenly parched, Reyalt gave a nervous half-bow, and then checked himself and performed a more full and proper one. A bow of acknowledgement he had been instructed to give, the deepness unspecified, but a full leg seemed easily the most appropriate reaction.

His duty performed, Reyalt was left on the edge of the sands with the curious feeling of being lost. Like his first time at an Ista gather - there had been so much around him, and yet he had been so overwhelmed by the new situation that he had barely done anything at all. This was going to be different, Reyalt told himself uncertainly.

Think of it as a runner race! You have a goal, a purpose… keep that in mind, and just have fun on the ride there. Rolling his shoulders a little, Reyalt could feel himself already slipping into the demeanor he carried as a jockey, a little swagger in his steps, a little confidence in his lazy smile. The attitude was out of place here on the hatching sands, and he suppressed all but the smile quickly. Nonetheless, he felt much more confident as he walked slowly across the sands, eyes jumping from one clump of eggs to the next as he looked for one yet unclaimed.

A red splash in the corner of his eye caused Reyalt to turn, a bit sharply, on his way towards a violently pink egg that had caught his attention almost from the start. Off to the side, sitting with what seemed almost a dignified air amongst the jumble of its brothers and sisters. It’s colors were bold and smooth, changing from red to brown to green along it’s length. Overall it was muted yet noticeable, its simplicity and small size perhaps keeping it from attracting more candidates.

It took Reyalt only a few strides to reach the egg, and he knelt down by it quickly, abruptly feeling the need to stake his claim. At a loss over what to actually do, he settled for quietly placing his hands on the shell and letting it’s heat seep into his palms. There was no momentous change in heart, no sudden self-realization of his own abilities, and yet after a moment of this silent meditation, Reyalt felt a grin begin to split his face. He was actually touching a dragon egg! If anything could make this real to him, it was the slightly rough texture of the shell beneath his fingers, and the internally created warmth now spreading up his arms. He had never imagined himself in this situation - the very thought had been too much to even dream of. But now, gently running is fingers across the red top and down over the brown and green stripes, Reyalt couldn’t think of a single place he’d rather be.

This would have to be planned and strategized carefully. Astrisabe knew that logistically, she had no chance of touching every egg in the clutch, and sensibly enough, not every egg would contain a dragon she stood a chance of Impressing, which suit her fine and dandy. There were only so many colors a heterosexual female could Impress, and those colors would be located in the smaller eggs of the clutch, and the largest, which currently had most of the female population of Candidates gathered around it, each one stepping forward and cooing soft nothings. Some of the behavior made Astri roll her eyes- the Candidatemaster himself had admitted that no one knew if touching the eggs actually endeared them towards a person, and it seemed pointless to be spending so much time staring at the gold egg with starry eyes, refusing to let go. That wasn't the behavior that got them there as Candidates.

Snorting softly, Astri moved forward to join the line of other females. She would not let this chance go bye, and she would not let her general disdain show. She thought she had outgrown that particular aspect of her personality, but old habits die hard, and perhaps her tendency to be a bit haughty had not vanished all the way.

When her own turn came, Astri bowed once more to the great Queen who let them touch her precious daughter. She didn't look too happy about it, flecks of orange whirling in her faceted eyes. Her whole posture was defensive, her body puffed up to look as large as possible (which wasn't that difficult to do, given how big she already was). It reminded Astri a bit of a mare and her new foal- mares could be downright vicious given half the chance, and they would protect their newborns with all their might.

Laying one hand against the warm shell, the hot sands pushing up through even her thick boot soles, Astri felt for the dragon inside. There was a semblance of life to the egg, but if she was expecting some great jolt, she didn't receive it. She took only a short time to acquaint herself with the Queen egg- she had others to examine, and if the Queen inside that egg wanted her, it wanted her. If not... There would be other dragons in the clutch, and there would be other clutches she could stand for. Astri, while on the older end of the spectrum for a Candidate, was not old yet, and there were rumors that Favan's Queen might rise soon.

Bowing again as she moved off, Astri strode purposefully to the first egg to get her attention- the Crowned Crane Egg. There was something very purposeful about its want of attention that appealed to her, making her grin. Again, she felt nothing as she laid her hands against the shell, but she did so all the same. It was a much smaller egg, but it didn't look like it was the smallest in the clutch. Hopefully it would contain a wonderful little green, but the Candidates had been told that the only thing they could accurately predict were surprises at the Hatching.

Next the Candidate moved to the Hyena Egg, whipping sweat from her brow as she did so. Now she could see the advantage of wearing just simple white robes on the Grounds. They would all be sweating from anxiety and excitement, and the heat just compounded it. They would probably all need showers after this.

Kneeling to stroke the shell of the little egg standing alone, Astri pondered which egg she would do next. She had time for perhaps one more, given that she was trying to give each a decent and even amount of time. No more or nor less than the others. But what else stood out to her? She supposed it wouldn't hurt to touch a larger egg, the sort frequented by the boys. They were all hoping for bronzes, and that's likely what the bigger eggs contained- maybe browns. But maybe there was a huge green somewhere? Doubtful, but Astri liked the idea of a larger green. There was something almost too delicate looking about the smaller ones, as if their limbs would snap in half. Oh, she liked the more delicately built dragons; she just didn't like it when their size seemed to indicate their own fragility.

Astri must have looked strange, waiting in line to stroke the shell of the Grevy's Zebra egg. It too was bold though, and even if it was one of the largest eggs in the clutch, she enjoyed feeling its smooth surface, marked with tiny little indentations. They all felt so warm and vivid, as if they were bursting out soon. Maybe they were. When were they expected to break free? She wasn't sure, but Astri would ask given the opportunity.

With her actual Touching done, Astrisabe stepped back, watching the other Candidates with a frank curiosity, sizing them up against both each other and herself. Both females and men were her competition in this event, and she didn't like to lose. Perhaps judging them as she did wasn't the best thing to do, but Astri couldn't help her somewhat analytical nature. She watched each egg that the Candidates touched, and tried to save it in her mind. It probably wouldn't stay very long, but for now she was content to observe, focused like a Terran falcon. Everyone's sleep had changed, for now, into wide eyed eagerness, and they all plowed into each other like puppies. It was endearing, in a way. Even Astri felt like a child again, and soon that overcame her observations, and she moved back among the clutch again, just taking it all in, letting her fingers gently trail across a shell here and there. She could stay here forever, just watching the multicolored eggs, and breathing in the scent of dragon .

As she scooted away from the Queen, it was only a matter of time before Lanakirene finally caught sight of the most blazingly pink thing she had ever seen. Blinking at it for a moment and then grinning hugely, she slipped among the eggs and around other Candidates, taking as wide a berth of them as possible to avoid collisions among the eggs. Closer to the pink egg, she crouched to look at it, raising an eyebrow and reaching out to trace its single black stripe. She had to bite back a giggle at the queer little thing...she had never thought she'd be able to use the word fun in describing an egg. "Can't wait to see what comes from you," she whispered, putting two fingers to her lips and placing them gently on the egg's tip before standing and rising on tiptoe, looking over heads in an attempt to find the other two she had wanted to see.

Catching sight of them, she turned back the way she had come and threaded her way out of the clutch to walk the perimeter, at the moment avoiding eye contact with other Candidates. She was on a mission, and neither of the eggs seemed to be at the moment occupied...

Was she allowed to touch them both at once? She wondered that as she stopped in front of the near-identical spotted eggs, tilting her head and putting her hands on her hips as she regarded them. The one with the rounder spots (what a shape difference the rosettes had up close! She hadn't noticed from a distance) seemed more forthright, if an egg could be that, but the way they were together was...affectionate. Either way, they were both lovely. Smiling and crouching down so she was on eye-level with the eggs, she reached out and touched them both, simultaneously, inclining her head to gently touch her forehead to each.

Then she stood up again and fluffed her hair, wiping beads of perspiration from her forehead at the same time. It was hot on the sands. The sooner she got out of the crowd, the better, she decided, and began to pick her way out. Turning to the Queens once more at the edge of the clutch, she gave them each a deep bow in turn before wandering to stand near the Candidatemaster once again. She caught sight of another girl finished and gave her a brief nod, turning her gaze, like Astri, back to the sands.

No matter how many times Jahangir was a part of a touching or hatching, it never got old. When the call to awaken happened, a sleepy eyed Jahangir eagerly got dressed. He loved this part as much as the acutally hatching. To be so close and able to touch the hardening eggs was extrodenary. Something he would remember for years to come.

Stepping onto the hot sands, he carefully bowed to the Queens standing guard before slowly heading towards the eggs. The larger eggs, although breathtaking, never really caught Jahangir's attention. He was always drawn toward the smallest ones. His own height making him feel a connection to the smallest of the bunch.

He still carefully touched and petted each egg he passed, mentally sending out his greetings. He didn't know if the dragonettes within recieved them but he figured it couldn't hurt to try. Spotting the smallest egg of the clutch, Jahangir slowly made his way over, touching the eggs and avoiding the other candidates as he went.

For such a small egg it was surprisingly bright, even if it was only partially visible from the pile of sand that was covering it. Gently, Jahangir used one hand to lovingly hold it in place while softly exposing it from the sand it had been partially under, carefull not to disrupt the eggs around it, especially the rough one that was barely touching it. As he worked, Jahangir hummed one of his favorite songs about dragons, not wanting to annoy the eggs with his horrible singing voice.

Once he finished freeing the egg from the sand, Jahangir sent out a mental, 'Good luck' to both the small egg and the rough one before focusing on the next small egg. It too was very colorful and he had to smile at it. So small yet such a big presence, he could understand that better then most.

Running a reverent hand down the small side the egg, Jahangir began his humming again, content to connect with the dragonettes the only way he knew how, he just wished he could have brought his flute with him.

On the morning of the touching, Sef found herself being dragged out of bed by a friend, having successfully muffled out the shouts of the candidate master by pulling her pillow over her head while she slept. The barracks were nearly empty, and she dressed in a rush, throwing on clothing and not even bothering with a belt. Proper dressing could be dealt with later - right now she had eggs to see!

Not that she had never seen eggs before, mind you, thought Sef as she filtered onto the hatching grounds with the other candidates. These eggs in particular she knew well, having snuck peeks with the other warrants when they were first laid, before she was sent from the lower caverns to the candidate’s quarters. Now her days were filled with hard work and lessons, with little time for sneaking in when Helirra and Favan were taking their golds out to eat.

No matter how nonchalant she acted about the ways of Ista weyr, however, the two queens could never fail to impress her. They seemed to only grow bigger each time she saw them, rather than becoming less impressive as she herself grew taller. Bowing nervously, Sef found herself almost wishing that she hadn’t ever snuck around behind their backs in order to see the eggs. Could queens sense guilt?

If they could, they didn’t care to accuse her of anything. Sef straightened out of her bow with no little relief and scuttled off across the hot sands. Most of the girls seemed to be making a beeline for the gold egg - Sef eyed them for a moment, and then shook her head. No, she was much too conscious of the way other girls made her feel. She would never make a gold rider, not even if things had been the opposite way and she were much more interested in men than women.

She didn’t find herself minding this ‘lost’ opportunity much though, as she wandered among the eggs. As always, a majority of the boys were clustered around the largest eggs in the hopes of finding a bronze. In turn, this left the littlest eggs - the ones likely to contain greens and blues - completely unmolested. Casting her eye around, Sef saw one of the few girls not at the gold egg get up and move away from a small spotted egg and over to the biggest egg of them all. Honing in on the now-lonely egg, Sef found herself squatting down on the hot sands to bring herself more to it’s level.

It was a squat little egg, with a commanding yet almost jaunty air about it, mostly gold and brown but sprinkled with black dots. She touched its warm sides hesitantly at first and then more firmly, running a thumb across the uneven surface. Although she was skeptical about bonding with dragons yet un-hatched, Sef found herself smiling nonetheless. The confidence embodied by this little egg amused her. Something about it made her think this little dragon would definitely be one to watch out for, once hatched. Humming tunelessly to herself in contentment, Sef sat back on her haunches and gave the egg one last fond rub on its crown, before getting up to find yet more eggs to improve her mood.

The boys rushed in first, then the girls; however, she stayed back. Let them run and touch the eggs greedily; if it made much of a difference she would be surprised. It was too late to go to the Queen egg, crowding it seemed a shore way to worsen her mother's temper. Rather, she moved to visit a few of the other eyes that had so caught her eye.

Had the egg not been guarded the closet, Raena would have mistaken the large tawny egg for the bigger one near their mother. This was the first egg that had pulled her attention; she couldn't help but love the way it looked. It was leaning as if it didn't want to have to stand on its own, how could that be? Dragons were not lazy lumps, they were great fighters!

Approaching, she moved almost through the other candidates not one to dance around people though she did it with practiced ease when she had no other choice. Getting to the tawny egg, she was careful not to touch any of the others as she placed one hand on the brightest amber part of the egg. The feeling of the dragon inside jolted through her. It was shocking, piercing and alien. She was not used to feeling anything that was not her own feelings, not even from Keek. Stroking the smooth slightly soft surface she got the feeling that what was inside was just biding its time until it was the moment to burst into action.

Smiling at the egg, she stroked it one more time before leaving, giving it a long parting glance.

Bypassing the Zebra egg and the Giraffe nearby, called to the small egg between them. Kneeling a little, she touched the golden egg with such striking markings like the little spots. Smiling, she could almost feel something but it was distant. The dragon inside either wasn't one to reach out to everyone, it didn't take to her. She didn't mind, touching it was comforting and slightly less startling then the feline colored egg before it. Still the egg seemed to want to be more alone, less crowed by its siblings and even the candidates near it. Even hatched she was sure it would be the same way, but that was alright, not everyone loved to be crowed. Even she, who was used to dealing with others, found it as stifling as the heat considering how everyone was acting.

Pulling away from the hyena egg, she again left it a long ways glance, sad to leave it.

Next she set her eyes on a very proud looking orange egg with uniform black spots. Walking carefully towards the egg, she once again placed her hand out to touch the surface. Chuckling she spoke for the first time that morning, "Bronze-heart." Or maybe Queen-heart would be better, it was so proud but she couldn’t' sense if it was female or male. Her mind dubbed it male, hopefully if it was female, she wouldn't remember to hold a grudge. The heat of the sands on the egg heating her hand almost intolerable, but it was worth every precious moment. At least, she assumed it was the sands and not the egg itself.

The last of the main clutch to truly capture her eye she didn't even see at first. Walking around, she happened to stop in front of the eye and glance down. Despite all the varying colors, the bright red at the top of the egg sit was almost shocking in intensity. She adored the color at the bottom of the egg, kneeling once more to touch the deep green before her fingers traveled up the brown to the red. This dear one felt great to touch, the egg seemed proud by her self, trusting of her mother and fine without needing to be crowded by some of her more protective siblings. This is another case that she would feel silly if she was wrong about the gender.

Glancing up at the egg's mother, she didn't want to lose the chance to touch her sister. Good bye, she bid the egg silently, then she stood and approached the giant Gold. Bowing deeply to the Gold mother, she walked to her, hands out and palms up. Slow movements, it took her longer to get to the egg but she didn't want to rush the large brightly golden egg with the darker colors around it. Placing her full hand on the egg, she found the touches she was sure she felt easier to take. By going to the Gold last, she had become a bit accustom to the feelings of the eggs so she wasn't shocked.

A warm smile of affection placed on her face as she stroked the egg for a few second. Grumbling of the mother drew her attention to the orange tinged eyes of the great Gold. "Thank you, great Lady, for allowing me to touch your beautiful daughter, and equally beautiful clutch." Touching the arm of the mother for a moment, she pulled away and moved back standing closer to mouth of the hatching grounds.

Even far from the eggs she touched, it felt just the same. They still caught her attention, each one she had touched, and still she remembered what it felt like as if she was still with her fingers on them. It was a jumble, warm, confusing, dismissive and affectionate. Her head would be spinning for a little while, but she stood straight and assured despite it all.

Pendra woke with a start at the bellow of the Candidatemaster. She sighed, Why must they always yell so? she thought, We're never allowed to be lazy, especially those of us born to Weyr life. With those thoughts she rolled to a sitting position and stretched. A quick look through the clothes chest and she brought out the outfit she'd reserved for the occassion. It was a typical of her everyday work clothes but Pendra ensured that she had one fully clean and unstained set for this first day in front of the Queen. Her hand brushed the soft fabric of the white candidate robe beside it and she smiled. It would be soon now; if the eggs were hard enough for the Touching, Hatching was not far.

Looking around at the others rushing so, there were a lot of firsttimers among the group, Pendra picked up her pace and was soon dressed. She was tying her hair back in the usual ribbon even as she followed the main group. She was nervous but it didn't show. Anyone observing her would see the proud aloof beauty that she herself didn't know existed. The aloof was her innate shyness keeping her apart from others, and the beauty something she'd never be able to see for herself.

As they entered the Grounds Pendra felt her nerves flare at the sight of the Queens and the eggs. She had to fight to keep from huntching over and making herself small and unnoticed. A brief shake and she pulled herself up straight and proud and thus she thanked the golden mother of the clutch for allowing her there and made her bow. That curtesy completed the candidate felt somewhat freer to look about at the amazingly colorful and many intricately patterned eggs. Even as she heading in the general direction of the Queen egg she took note of several of the smaller eggs. She was never quite certain when it came to the queen egg, she was rather openminded when it came to relationships. Still so far her attractions had been for men so she felt required to make the gesture, the little Queen within had a right to know all who were out there.

Such a beautiful clutch, she thought as she made another bow to the Queen before taking her turn to brush her hand accross the golden egg. There was something so comforting about the warmth of the eggs, the content lives nestled within them not quite ready to enter the wide world... Someday the sky will be yours, her thoughts whispered toward goldenchild within. Another bow to the Queen and Pendra moved away from the crowd of female candidates. She wasn't quite sure what had possessed her to speak so... but there couldn't be any harm in positive thoughts, could there?

Pendra looked about her, growing more and more nervous, picking up on the tension the mother of the clutch was begining to feel. Not much time then... she thought and made her way over to one of the clusters of eggs. She blinked at the chaotic patterning of the Zebra egg, and found comfort in the tawny, brown and amber of the egg resting against it. Weaving her way past the boys drawn to the large egg, she managed to get close enough to give the Lion egg a gentle caress.

Moving in the direction of the Queen again Pendra stiffles a giggle at the bright colors of the smallest of the clutch. Still the cheerful tones of the Flamingo egg are irresistable and she gives it a pat as she passes. Even more irrisistable however is the African Sunrise egg, the restful colors help ease the tension and Pendra finds herself lingering there for a time before noting others want a chance at a Touch themselves. With an apologetic smile and a blush she stepped away. Close again to the girls lingering around the golden egg she notices the smaller egg nestled close to the Queen. She looked up trying to judge the time and edged in for a quick fingertip brushing of the Bongo egg before backing away from the clutch to observe her fellow candidates...

The Candidatemaster’s voice seemed to boom in her head till it filled her dream world, with a jolt Riyinn opened her eyes to gaze down at Kir, the brown firelizard was all but a splat on her seeming to have fell asleep in the same way he had fallen.

Her eyes shifted the other candidates quickly dressing and rushing off and suddenly it seemed to hit and she tossed the sheets off. Of course that made a very unhappy flit who quickly started bickering her out as she quickly ranked her shoes and pants on. Already the room was starting to empty and she refused to be late. She looked at Kir his eyes still whirling in a mass of anger and annoyment. “go find a warm rock or something” she almost shoved him as she bulldozed out the door to meet up with the other candidates.

Following the line through the door she had to double take the sight that formed in front of her, mass’s of eggs littered the sand guarded by large golden dragons. She bowed quickly to the them, a missing finger was not all she had to worry about. Her bow was a bit long and she hoped no dishonor was formed by it. Hurrying off she approached the one she was sure was the queen the girls all massed around it. Its large size and color made it stand out from the rest of the clutch. She was impatient, there was something she wasn’t which was overly emotional but she wanted to almost cry she had dreamed about this for days with no end. Her eyes of their own will darted to the guarding mothers and she gulped. She was sweating a bit the sand wasn’t helping any or the glare of the mothers. As the mass of girls in front of her finally filed away she looked at the egg more closely, and pressed her hand on the shell, she wasn’t sure what she was hoping for but quickly took a breath, unaware that she was even holding it.

Turning from the egg once again she bowed long to the queen before browsing the shells littered before her. Touching them all was what she wanted but even that was sure to take longer then given. One egg outta the clutch seemed to stand out the most it was small smaller then most and almost hidden but it was bright its reddish shell radiating a “look at me” but the white seemed an almost calming effect. Placing her hand on it, it was warm just as the queen egg had been why she had doubted she was unsure. Brushing the egg she thought out a silent bye as she walked farther away from the mothers gazing at eggs as she went.

The last egg to draw her was the flamingo it stood out same as the red one she was never one for pink but it seemed to say "see me" a bit more mellow colored then some of the siblings but no where near not being worth the time. She brushed it her hand warming to the touch quickly. they were so warm, stepping a bit she decided it was close to leaving the warmth of the sands was leaking through her shoes and the mothers eyes seemed to bore thro her soul. Turning once again she bowed "thank you for this chance" she thought while saying it very quietly to her self.

Finally she turned and set to studying the others who passed the eggs.

Tseka was ready and up, before the call was made to come to the hatching grounds. Sleep was still something she was getting used to. Back when she was still involved in the smith craft, long hours were whiled away in the night, and sleep was irregular at best. Here at the weyr...she was getting the most sleep she'd ever had in her life. She still went to bed late, and woke up early, which made for some pretty boring hours, but...she was slowly getting used to it. She could get to bed fairly regularly now. But the the excitement of a touching looming overhead...there was no way she would be able to sleep. She had no idea what time she had really gotten up, but she was eager when the call finally came. Slipping into her shoes was covered by a haze, an automatic response. Was this...was this real? Was she really doing this? She couldn't think straight. Xythe and Daeok, mischievous little flits that they were, complained loudly when she explained that they couldn't come. But for all their squealing and squeaking, Tseka got her way, and the pair grudgingly left her alone.

She had a good viewpoint as they walked, being a head taller than most of the girls(And a good few inches taller than most of the boys); so when they first entered the hatching ground, she was one of the first to really get a glimpse of the eggs, and the queens. Tseka had never stolen looks at the eggs. She had a mischievous streak, to be sure, but respect for the gold dragons kept her curiousity at bay. Her face reflected her suprise, and up until now, her ignorance.

The queens...were huge. Monsters of glossy gold. But monster wasn't quite the right word. For as scary, as intimidating as they were...they were beautiful. The way their forehead sloped up at the eye ridge, the gentle curve of their stomach, the suppleness of limbs and tail...they held an air of dignity about them that Tseka had never seen in another dragon. These really were queens, not just in color. They sat so regally upon their thrones of sand...watching all of the candidates run around. What did they think about all of it? They couldn't be happy. The two of them seemed awfully agitated. Tseka made sure her bow was exagerated, to make sure she got her point across. In no way would she ever mean to agitate one of these colossal mothers. Not that she ever feared a dragon, and not that she thought dragons hurt people, other than before impression, when they didn't know any better, but...she couldn't picture it being nice, to have either of the golds mad.

Tseka watched the other candidates, smiling a little, particularly at the younger ones. The little ones, though most people were little from her perspective. They were so happy here. This was a child's dream! A chance at a lifelong companion, a firebreathing, intelligent dragon, the gift of freedom, and the ability to travel anywhere in the blink of an eye. Just what any rebelious youth wanted. Then how come...how come that wasn't how she felt? How come she didn't crave the freedom that the others seemed to?

But while the other candidates dashed about, touching the eggs, oohing and aahing, Tseka held back. This was...scary, almost. She wished she could have Xythe and Daeok with her, to reassure her. Their antics always helped to ground her, to bring about action. She drifted between the eggs like a ghost, reaching out to touch one of the shells, only to draw her hand back before she made contact. What if...what if she did impress. She would never be able to go back to smithing. Once a rider, always a rider. Unless her dragon were to die. But that was so terrible a thought, that Tseka pushed it from her mind with utter revulsion. She could not dwell on unpleasantries on what was supposed to be a pleasant occasion.

But...if she failed to impress...there would be a few more clutches, until she was too old, right? But no, that wasn't the right mind-frame either! She wasn't searched so she could be hesitant, and doubting. She was searched because she was honest, strong, daring, candid, responsible...there was no room for doubt! But how could she be sure? And then she knew. There was a way to snap herself out of this, wasn't there? Fear, fear was always good for waking someone up. She cast a sidelong glance at one of the queens. She wasn't scared of them, but...the queen egg. She stared at it with mixed longing and dread. That beautiful, creamy blend of golds and yellows. That would wake her up, if nothing else would.

Crunch Crunch

As she walked forward, in a slow, paced march towards that enormous egg...she couldn't help but feel self aware. Not that she doubted herself for a moment. She was terrifically self confident. And after all, hadn't all of the heterosexual girls been instructed to touch the queen egg? No...it was almost...a state of hyper awareness? Her footsteps synced up with her heartbeat, which was increasing. This was it. This was a change. If she impressed a dragon...there was no going back.

...had she really gotten to the queen so quickly. Tseka looked up to the figure above her, making sure to make eye contact, and to smile. She gave a splendid bow, accenting it with a flourish of her arm. It was even better than her entrance bow. Directed towards anyone else...it would have been mocking. But to the queen...she meant it with all her heart. She was sincere. A dragon had seen to it that'd she'd been made a candidate, and it was this great mother that was giving her a chance to fall in love with one of her children. And that deserved the highest of respect. "Thank you, truly." she stated, but wasn't aware if the gold heard her or not. Either way, she couldn't miss the gesture. The words were just as much for Tseka as for the queen herself. She was waking herself up. This wasn't a dream, this was real. This was her chance at a better life. Free of prejudice and sexist males. This was her chance at freedom. It was just...the kind of freedom she wanted, wasn't the kind everyone else seemed to think about. No, she wanted a different life. If she never impressed, she would stay at the weyr regardless. She loved it here. She loved the people, the jobs, the community, and the responsibility and trust people placed on her. When she was here, she felt...wanted. She couldn't recall ever feeling that back at the smith hall. But she didn't think about that anymore. That chapter was over. This was her life now. And she would see to it that she lived it to the fullest.

She marched over to the queen egg, waiting idly for the other girls to clear out of the way. Normally, she would have held them in contempt, these girls who cooed and hung over the queen, as if begging her to choose them once the little one hatched. But Tseka found herself devoid of resentment. Maybe, beneath all the falseness and girlish nonsense...maybe the little queen would end up choosing one of these girls. In that case, one of these girls could very much come to rule over Tseka. To be a leader. Tseka could not hate that. If one of these girls was fit for leadership...then Tseka would support them in the fullest. However, she would not, could not, fondle and drool on the egg. Dragons were intelligent. It would be an insult to the little queen to idolize about her etc. Dragons and riders were equals. Tseka had understood that long before she came to the Weyr. If the little queen hatched, and liked her, it would be because they were meant for each other. It would be the same if the little queen liked any other girl.

Tseka stepped forward when it was her turn, leaning forward and placing her hand on the shell. It was...so warm. She leaned forward, leaning against it, lightly, so as not to bother the queen with the notion she was harming it. Her arms were spread wide, as if she were trying to hug it. She pressed her cheek against the shell, and closed her eyes, humming a little song, though it seemed unlikely the little queen could hear her. Nonetheless..."Grow well, little one, you have a bright future ahead of you," she whispered, and with that she took her leave. She did not linger, and did not look back. She wasn't hung up on the idea of power or fame, or of a queen. And besides...trying to sway a dragon in your favor was ridiculous. And dishonest. It didn't bespeak good character. At least in Tseka's opinion.

With eyes cleared now of doubt or concern, she turned back to the rest of the eggs. What a beautiful lot they were. Never in her life could she recall something so brilliant. So varied and colorful! She walked among them, whispering to herself, sending back mental images to Xythe and Daeok, so they wouldn't feel left out.

To think...inside each one of these eggs...a tiny dragon was growing. Soon to be hatching. Intelligent, beautiful, graceful, powerful...they would protect Pern from thread, risking their own lives in the prospect. What wonderful, selfless creatures. She chuckled to herself. Maybe not completely selfless. If they were anything like her two flits...they'd have personality. Quirks and interests and habits. But wasn't that what made them unique? Individual? Lovable?

The idea of having a second half was...interesting, and highly appealing. Tseka liked boys. She couldn't lie. But she had never met one with whom she'd felt a real attachment for. Her closest bonds had always been with her flits, and with her dad. Xythe and Daeok were...interesting. That link they shared...through which images and emotions could be exchanged, and in Tseka's case, she could tell them things, even if they couldn't talk back. But dragons...it was said that dragons were more than that. The connection was comsuming, and it became a part of you. Tseka couldn't imagine that. But she longed for it so badly. Craved it. Xythe and Daeok were sweet. But the biggest thing she missed about the smith hall was her father. She could talk to him, share her intimacies...here, she had friends, and Xythe and Daeok were supportive, as supportive as they could be anyway, but...she wasn't intimate with anyone. Still...she wasn't desperate. She wouldn't let herself be. Dragons were smart. If they liked her, she would impress. If not, she would wait. And if still not then...then she would live. Through harship and toil, happiness and exuberance, she would live. But that was for later, for now...

it was time to touch some eggs!

After spending a short amount of time with the second egg, Nathail steps back to let other candidates have a chance with them. He looks around again and heads over to the pink one that had caught his eye before to just look at it from a small distance.

Tiny as it may look, it definitely wasn't out shined by all the bigger eggs. Not with that color for sure. He still wondered if the pink color was the result of someone's prank and dying it, but one look at the protective mother easily quells that notion. If anyone had dared to get near her eggs for such a thing they'd be sorely in for it. Hie eyes go back to the pink shell again to study it and nods appreciatively. At least it wouldn't be overlooked because of the larger siblings so there was definitely something to admire about that.

Deciding the egg had been stared at enough he heads back to the entrance to keep back with a few of the other candidates that had finished their Touching and be out of the way, and one of the first to get back to their dorms where it wasn't so darned hot.

Kallista was up at the first call from the Candidate Master's voice. Her eyes popped open and she waited a moment while she adjusted to the little bit of light coming into the rooms. Since the Gather, her father had given her permission to stay at the Weyr and not worry about being petitioned. Dressing quickly, the runner girl pulled her copperish locks back with a piece of wherhide, she moved with fluid efficiency.

The girls were grouped together as were the boys. She gave a quick smile to Tseka, the smith girl she had become tentative friends with over the past sevendays. The groups made their way to the Sands. Kallista had been past the Hatching Grounds while tending to errands and duties while in the Weyr. However, this was the first time that she had seen either Gold dragon. Up and up, her head tilted back. Both queens sat back, watching all the Candidates with very intense gazes. All of the others around her seemed to be bowing or making some sort of gesture of respect. If she were a Gold, Kallista thought in a mused voice, she would want all her children's future life mates to meet her gaze. Prove their worthiness. Of course, the bowing could not hurt either.

So Kallista bowed, more amused and in awe, than in fear or nerves like many of the others around her. The Golds reminded her of Holder Ladies dressed up at their finest and demanding everyone's attentions. Slowly, the males and females began to scatter, each being drawn from egg to egg. The Runner moved past both queens and towards what was obviously the gold egg of the clutch. Growing inside was a little queen who would someday tower over another group of Candidates. And such was the cycle of life. Kallista stopped in front of the large egg just as another girl did... With a sideways glance, Kallista watched the as she gently stroked the egg. Would the little one inside be demure and sweet or bold and spicy?

Carefully, she placed both her hands on the queen egg and gasped at how hard but how warm the shell was beneath her fingertips. Simply amazing! She allowed her hands to slide down the shell before removing them and placing them back at her side. Did the little queen inside feel everyone's touches? Was she already responding to one of the girls who walked these Sands? Shaking her head, Kallista gave a small salute to both queens before wandering to check out the other eggs.

Maranan's eyes snapped awake at the sound of the Candidatemaster's voice. He jumped out of bed and put on his sandals. He happened to be wearing his breeches. He threw on a shirt and lined up with the others. He was glad that he was always up early on the ship. For he was wide awake and ready.
He followed everyone and saw the eggs. Others had told him about them. How some were of odd coloring and such, but he had not seen them yet. He was surprised to see these very large eggs and their mother. He waited a bit and then entered and bowed low to the Queens.

They were very big and he felt quite small next to them. He felt their eyes on him. He wanted to hide, but he knew he had to find some courage. He straightened up and walked near the second set of eggs. He loved their colors and they made him feel happy. He went over and lightly touched one. He smiled. It felt strangely thrilling to know that under this shell was a dragonet and that he may someday ride it. Even if he didn't impress, he was so glad for this honor. He wandered around the eggs and lightly touched a few more before bowing to the queens again and walking out. He looked back and smiled. He was just glad for the opportunity to even get the chance to try to impress. He walked with the others and smiled.

Dusen caressed the egg on last time before stepping back. There was no reason to monopolize one egg, it wasn't like it was a proven fact that touching an egg made you anymore likely to impress. He moved away from it, and glanced over the rest of the clutch, looking to see if there were any others that caught his eye.

The little twin of the egg he had just touched was pretty, although he still thought that the Cheetah egg was nicer, and he ran his hand over it before moving off.
