Holy darkness blade if you read the books it says he shortened his name to the first letter Yes, but shortened what name exactly? It could be just about anything. Maybe it's Despair? But I don't think that he would have shortened that name. It had to be something he disliked because of his father. neutral But apparently we may not know until it's already the end to Vampire Hunter D. crying

The discussion continues- and is still open to speculation. Some interesting discoveries are being made in my search for D's true name. I'll post Jesse's Preview or Summary of "D - Armageddon" in the next post.Jesse Stuart Mon Mar 16, 2009 10:53 am "Jesse Stuart" Re: Does D really have a first name?
I don't think D would be the first dhampir, or at least it doesn't seem likely, as dhampirs are simply human/vampire halfbreeds. What sets D apart is that he's the Sacred Ancestor's "only sucess" -- as we see during the course of the books, the Sacred Ancestor's chief goal seems to be creating a species with all of the strengths of vampires but none of the weaknesses, capable of surviving without needing to drink human blood.
I believe the common belief that the Sacred Ancestor is Dracula probably comes from the term, "Sacred Ancestor", which would probably imply that he's the progenitor of the vampire race. Though it's also at least hinted that D's father's name at least starts with "Drac".
That said, I wouldn't really expect to know the truth until the series is coming to an end, which could very well be presented post-mortem by Kikuchi, since it seems he intends to keep writing books until he dies, and has plans in place to answer all the unanswered questions after he's passed. I wouldn't be surprised if he's already completed the manuscript for the final book, as a matter of fact, since the short story D-Armageddon (which I recently finally managed to read) is touted as a preview of the final climactic battle between D and his father.Cathy Krusberg Mon Mar 16, 2009 3:09 pm Cathy Krusberg Re: Does D really have a first name?
What is your source for this information? I'd be curious to the know source of this (i.e., who has touted it as a preview of the final battle).
Cathy Krusberg Jesse Stuart Mon Mar 16, 2009 5:51 pm "Jesse Stuart" Re: Does D really have a first name?
It's in Yoshitaka Amano's Maten artbook, in Japanese. I'll post a summary of it in a new message. According to Hideyuki Kikuchi's official fansite, the Vampire Hunter D Dokuhon is still slated for an English release in the future, so hopefully we'll see an official translation before long.
As for the 'final battle' thing, I've seen it called that on a few Japanese fansites, I believe one was Saiko Takaki's, in the merchandise section, as I recall. Things to the extent of, "sudden preview of the ending" or "fight between D and his father", though the story seems to end with the implication that the fight isn't over yet.
I suppose it might not be a 'final battle', but it's pretty definitely a fight between D and his father and seems really climactic.

Could this be D's final battle? D- Armageddon seems to be the final climatic battle between D and his father. (Unfortunately his name is still not revealed.)
*Caution Contains Spoilers*
Jesse Stuart Mon Mar 16, 2009 7:27 pm "Jesse Stuart" D - Armageddon Summary
D - Armageddon is a short story that was originally published in The Chaser, which I believe was a Japanese SF / Fantasy magazine. It was later reprinted in Yoshitaka Amano's artbook Maten and then in the Vampire Hunter D Dokuhon guide. In it, two unnamed characters do battle. There are illustrations, which you may have seen online or in Coffin: The Art of Vampire Hunter D. One of them features what is presumed to be D's mother, while another features what I can only imagine is supposed to be his father.
To preface, the story is sort of vague in that neither of the two combats are named. It's told more-or-less from the perspective of D's father, who is basically only described as "he" or "him", while D is referred to only as his "enemy", or opponent, or other such descriptors. There is, however, little doubt as to their identities. D's father seems to speak in plain text (which I'm sure would be italicized) without quotations, and says the same sort of things he says in the novels, while his "enemy" matches D's physical description to a tee. The story takes place in the middle of a battlefield, and begins with the D's father apparantly witnessing some sort of vision or memory of a "final battle".
Also, my Japanese is certainly not perfect, so don't neccesarily take this as a perfect translation or complete summary. The Vampire Hunter D Dokuhon is still due to have an official English translation eventually, last I checked, so look forward to Kevin's translation, which will be much better.
On with the summary, which turned out much, much longer than I'd originally intended:
.................................................................... D- Armageddon
It begins with "him" standing in the middle of a field, surrounded by darkness. He looks skyward; dark clouds are swirling like they were filmed in time-lapse. In the darkness, he observes the "Space Eater", some sort of weapon of mass destruction that was used as a last resort. Knowing that his "enemy" would soon attack, he feels pride and admiration, for even the "Space Eater", which utilizes the very structure of normal space as its only energy source, wouldn't be able to stop his enemy's advance.
A streak of light shoots through the sky at an extreme angle, producing a bright half-sphere explosion on the horizon, which is thousands upon thousands of miles away. Moments later he is hit with shockwaves, on the order of those produced by electron atomic warheads, which rock the atmosphere and beat against his body. A thundering roar follows. A familiar scent is in the air, clinging to his fluttering cape. 'As I thought, he's arrived.'
He turns his gaze across the plains, his eyes burning with radiance in the wind. He begins to laugh with a voice that would drive a normal man insane before they had time to cover their ears -- but to him, it sounds like the sweet tune of heavenly music. A foreboding sensation eddies around him. Black hands grasp at his ankles, connected to burnt and festering arms, with faces at their base that seem to be spewing wind and voices at the same time. "I, 7500 years ago, died." "I, 6000 years ago." "I, 4956 years ago." "Everyone died here. Soon, you'll die too. No. Before that, we'll kill you!"
He howls with laughter darker than the Grim Reaper's death sentence, mocking the very dead. At the horrifying sound of his voice, the arms turn instantly to dust and are carried away by the wind. He kicks at the ground. Another hand appears. "I fought and fell here," a quiet voice said. "I waged war against the evils of this world. My heart harbors no shame." They were the righteous dead, shadows of death compelled to speak of their just lives, and thousands materialized one by one.
'What's the matter, did you come all the way back from hell to explain yourselves with mere words? For those of you who have tasted death and have nothing left to fear, go ahead and continue to cheat at the game of life!' With that ultimatum, his hand darts out and a dagger flies through the air. It is caught by an arm, and others reach for it. In moments, a dreadful struggle has erupted at his feet, complete with the sound of steel clashing against steel and voices of hatred. Each time steel slices through something, remains spray before his face.
How long this went on he didn't know, it could have been mere moments. Darkness settled around him. He remembered his own words, 'You, too, could die once again. You've revived many times, but to taste true death would be a wonderful thing.' Nobody was listening. He mouthed the name of this field -- it was like a curse, like a prayer, like the Song of Songs: Armageddon.
A name recorded in ancient scripture as the location of the final battle between good and evil, a final battle which had in fact been fought countless times. Before his eyes, the ground where the battle had been decided and the forms of those destroyed could all be witnessed at once. With each step, the ground beneath him eroded, releasing a stench and oozing black blood, like the Earth itself was dead meat.
Suddenly, a violent sensation makes him turn his face -- roaring lightening splits the sky. Returning his eyes, he sees it, beneath the brilliant flash: a fearless lone rider on horseback, emerging with the flash and then melting back into the darkness. A being born from both the light and darkness, who must surely hate both. Though, perhaps he did as well. 'Come then,' he says to the rider who had stopped some distance before him, 'Well? Come. Right here. I'm waiting.'
A flash reveals a silhouette in black clothes standing several meters ahead. The wide-brimmed traveller's hat, the prominent black cape, and most vivid of all, the blue pendant that shone in front of his chest -- finally, they'd met. He thought of the long, long road he'd followed to get this point. From the "Enemy's" back something shimmers and extends in a flash, drawn without hesititation in an infinitely long arc towards his hip. He laughs silently. At the last moment, the blade is inverted, slicing through the cloth at his groin and towards the top of his head, delivering a sharp pain.
Warmth drips down his nose. A wound that wouldn't close, his opponent commanded enormous skill. 'Well done.' Shouting this praise, he activates the AP Unit (Attack/Protect Unit) that is "printed" in his right hand. Through electron excitation, the AP Unit generates a pillar of red hot magma, which erupts from the ground at his "Enemy's" feet, enveloping his graceful flame. His "Enemy", wreathed in flame, did not move, only holding the hem of his cape over the bottom of their face, splitting the stream of lava so that it hadn't harmed so much as a hair on his head. In moments, the field goes from a crimson hue to pale, as the pillar of magma becomes like a pillar of glistening crystal.
From blazing hot to extreme cold, the shift in attacks took mere miliseconds, but he was able to see it. The extremely low temperature of -272.8 degrees should have frozen even the electrons moving around the neutrons of his "Enemy's" atoms, but despite this, his eyes were gradually opening, the whites of his eyes gradually turning crimson. Just like his own eyes. Just then, they easily lowered the cape from their face and the prison of ice vanished. Flames sliced through the air, some piercing his own body -- white stakes which had caught fire from friction through the air. 'Magnificent.' This is how it had to be, and the battle must have been fated from the start, he thought.
Wind whirled around his "Enemy". A faint noise issued from his right hand, and suddenly there stood another between the two of them. Tranquility fell over both them and the ghostly shadow -- a woman. He knew the personal illusion producing mechanism had generated it, but even the heart of one who'd painted the iron sand with blood for 10,000 years somehow lost all its tension. It had probably been conjured so he could defeat his opponent while they were distracted, but now it seems the trap he'd set threatened to ensnare him as well. At the core of this conflict, the battle would be decided not by a physical weapon, but by a crystal clear mind. Even the faintest vestige of emotion would prove fatal. His AP Unit's probe and attack equipment was connected to its "Discretionary" circuit, and it had launched the psychic attack at the "Enemy" of its own free will.
He and his "Enemy" read the words being spelled by her lips: "I wanted to see you." And then abruptly, all sounds subsided and the darkness solidified. The ground was gone, replaced with layer upon layer of dead bodies, with even more streaming down from the sky, bursting with maggots, all around them. "You're here, and--" "You're the last soldiers. Hurry, hurry, join the group." The voices of thousands of dead echoed around them. He could feel them beckoning him. He could sense it. At that very moment, an intense pain seized his neck. Right before his eyes was the visage of a gorgeous youth. Protruding above his chest, between both hands, a naked blade cut into his neck, stopping at the bone.
'What kind of man are you?' he wondered as he felt the disturbing sensation of the blood ceaselessly flowing out. 'You were invited to the group of those whose lives had just ended, didn't you even feel a little joy? With your back turned on the living, in such a dreadful solitude that you can't even hear the temptations of the dead. My only success, I commend you. On the other hand, why didn't you behead me at once? That would have been fatal.' With that, he regurgitated blood into his mouth, quickly spitting it into the eyes of his "Enemy". Their red eyes were momentarily deprived of their radiance. He traced a unique arc revolving around to behind the woman -- in this position, a blade would have to cut through her before it could reach him.
White light sliced through the darkness... then stopped. Right before the woman's breast. He instinctively raised his right hand, and a black light pierced his "Enemy's" chest. Looking into the eyes of his falling "Enemy", pity gripped his heart. Then he realized that in the dark plains, they stood alone. The woman was gone. 'Is it over?' For some reason, he felt outrageously disappointed, but already his stubborn mind was telling him it couldn't have ended any other way. 'Once again, I couldn't die. Where should I go after this?' Completely turning his back on his enemy, he realized that their left hand had been bent abnormally, and he looked back in amazement.
Fiercly gusting wind covered the entire field. Lighting colored crimson filled the sky, but, no, it wasn't the just the lighting, but the entire field of vision that was dyed red. Bloodly wind was blowing up from the ground. Over his "Enemy", it narrowed and took on a funnel shape, becoming more and more slender until it became a long line flowing into their left palm. Lighting fell, into a mouth that opened in the palm. To small eyes opened in the hand, and looked at him with a sideways glance, and the mouth seemed to smirk happily at him. He'd finally realized that the blood pouring from his own neck was being drawn into the bloody wind. His "Enemy" stood, their beautiful face in the darkness, their entire body engulfed in phosphorescence like that released by electromagnetic waves, an unearthly statue of blue light. 'It isn't over,' he muttered with that hope, one of many emotions flooding through his chest.
'You, like myself, are immortal. Unwilling to live or to let yourself die in the carnage of battle. Is it fate against which you fight? Is that it?' His "Enemy's" blade danced and his body drifted like a leaf through the air to avoid the violent attack. Without even a chance to land, the drawn sword pierced his heart. 'That's good, too.' Both sorrow and joy welled up in him, and he accepted it all, for there were no roads of life without death on the horizon, and there was no way to backtrack. Two silhouettes overlapped in a mutual hug, pale light pressed in around them, the plains grew greener, and the wind blew with a wooshing sound. This was a never-ending road of bloodshed.
And, well, that's it. I hadn't intended for such a detailed summary, but I ended up summarizing it down to just about every sentence, though I did gloss over a bit of it. Enjoy!

I highly doubt that D's dad is Christopher Lee's Dracula. The stories don't match.
I think it's been inspired, so he changed up ol' Drac a bit to fit the backstory.

I think Hideyuki's version of Dracula is probably different from the Dracula we all know. We'll just have to wait and see.
