... Ocrap. He'd called her bluff.

In actuality Ursa wasn't nervous because she didn't know how to fight, Ursa was nervous because she'd never fought anyone outside of her family in their play matches and sparring practices. Could she apply it in a real fight, when she actually had to fight to defend herself and not just for skill practice? For some reason just then she thought of Uddhava, and the way she'd felt protective over him when they first met, the way she still felt protective over him. One day she'd be an adult, and hopefully a storyteller or maybe cub sitter or maybe even part of the council or guard, and she'd have to know how to fight, to defend her homeland. This day would come sooner or later and if she got her first experience out of the way it would hopefully only get better from there.

She braced, doing all she could not to squint, but as an idea hit her, at the last moment she leaped to the side, or, at least if she had more practice it would have been as graceful. As it was it was more like she scrambled out of the way at the last second, remembering herself. Now her fur was REALLY on end, but she was better prepared this time, baring her fangs with a soft warning growl, ears flat against her skull now as she struck at his passing side with her claws in the brief seconds in which this all transpired.

He was surprised by how well she managed to evade him. But this was the problem with Azar. There was no circling, no biding. He'd fling himself in with no thought to his own condition. There was no plan, no thinking, just blind attack hoping that he'd come out with something to show for it. His fighting was, in fact, based on nothing but luck. Sometimes his luck ran out, as it did now.

Surprised by her evade, he saw her aim for him at the last second. He leapt away from her, but not before feeling her claws rake through his fur. Not close enough to draw blood, but enough that they left behind an angering sting. With a growl, he steadied himself again and threw himself at her, head low as if using himself as a battering ram.

Prepared as she might have thought herself, she took too much thrill from landing the first "blow", if one wanted to call it such. She felt it connect, in any case, and her blood raced, heart leaping with excitement. All she really wanted was to prove that just because she was a girl, that didn't mean she couldn't fight, or couldn't fight well. It didn't even have to come to this, really, but she could worry about regretting it later. There was no room for that even in this relatively harmless little impromptu match up.

She yelped as he knocked her over this time and she hit the sand and bedrock hard. Growling in angry defense now she tried to sink her teeth into part of him (Preferrably a leg) before he could bear down on her, make him at least think twice about coming at her with her paws and fangs splayed.

And what a bite she had! He yelped as she sank her teeth into the fur on his foreleg, driving away any feeling of victory that might have been there a second ago. Okay, maybe girls could fight a little bit...but not as good as him. No way!

For a moment he tried to ignore her teeth, but then it got too much and he tried to pull his leg free. At the same time he lowered his head to try and catch hold of an ear, to try and force her to let go if struggling didn't work. However, the combination of both movements twisted his body and ended up knocking him off balance. He staggered suddenly and remembered - too late - Ka's warning on balance and how important it was for fighting.

He'd been practising, but he'd never quite managed to master it.

Ursa was prepared to feel the sting of his teeth, but it turned out his own motions would be his downfall instead-- literally. She had a moment of insight and reached up to give him that last helpful shove to knock him onto his side, hind paws sweeping towards him, claws safely tucked in. Because she still had a mouthful of his leg, too, she had to either let go or move with him, so she did the latter.

Once she was standing over him she shot him a look but released his paw and quickly stepped back, not much caring for the taste of his blood. She might need to know how to fight, but at this age she rather doubted if she'd ever like it, not like those that opted to do so freely, or the adults, like Uuo and Azula, who seemed to love fighting or sparring, despite their differences. Her small chest heaved a little, the scrap so far had been brief, and she didn't know that it was over, but she for one was ready to call it quits if he was.

And with her knock, he fell completely onto his side, flailing there helplessly for a moment, cursing and growling loudly. Why wouldn't she let go? Why was she being such a pain? And why, why was he getting beaten by a GIRL?!

Then she was stepping back, releasing him, and the shame infused him, burned in him like fire. He pulled himself quickly to his feet, and span to meet her gaze, furious at her and himself. For a moment it seemed like he might go for her again, but he didn't.

"You're lucky I felt sorry for you and let you win, girl." He replied. "What would my parents say if they saw I'd beaten up a girl, huh? You better watch who you pick fights with, cos they might not be such a gentleman as me, right?" He puffed out his chest and shook his front leg to ease the ache.

There was no chance or time for any sense of victory or excitement just yet, his last barb hitting it's mark at first. Even after all that he was still saying he was a better fighter?? Had he really been holding back? Ursa didn't think so, and that's why it was good that her logic won out over her temper much more often than not. The barb that had previously hit it's mark now fell loose as she began to wonder if he wasn't just making up excuses for the "loss", though it hadn't been much of a fight to start with.

A gentleman, right. Which would explain why he was the one that lost his cool and attacked her, yes?

She replied instead, calmly again. "I'm not the one bragging to everyone I meet how amazing I am and how boring everyone elses jobs are going to be, or how 'unfirekin' their coats are. Maybe you should watch who you pick your fights with instead."

Tail lashing briefly her eyes went to his wounded leg and she felt guilty, but knew he wouldn't take her help, unless, maybe... Hmph.

"Fine. Then let me return the favor--" Even Ursa had a hard time giving in to his demeaning excuse, but she'd remember well that aggression didn't fight denial. They both knew, even if he denied it, who had "won", at the most she considered them even. She wanted to make peace, friends, not more fighting amongst themselves, and enemies. "--for you being the bigger lion and help you with your leg."

He growled and tensed as she drew near, half expecting her to give him a good clout across the head. Well, let's be honest, it wouldn't be the first time someone had showed him up for being an irritating little git. He pretty much deserved everything he got. "Return the...?" He halted his own words and glared at her, lifting his foreleg up away from her as if thinking she might try to tear it off. "Help? How're you gonna help? You're the one who went and bit it in the first place. If you were gonna feel guilty about it, you shouldn't have done it in the first place!"

"If you lick it the wounds will close faster." She frowned back at his paranoia, an edge of exasperation in her voice, though to anyone who had been watching at this point it might just be amusing. They were quite the interesting pair of opposites. "I'm not going to hit you again. You're the one that attacked me, remember?" She hadn't started it, he had. She'd only intended to offer a sparring partner, to help him practice, never mind that she had technically baited him into it-- she hadn't expected him to call her bluff. Again she moved closer. "And I do feel guilty, but I don't regret it. You would've just done the same thing to me if I hadn't stopped you-- Willyouholdstill?! Seriously! Are you that afraid of me? I'm 'just a girl', remember?" She growled softly, sternly as he kept moving away from her through out the exchange.

"I didn't attack you. I wasn't going to, not until you said what you did." He retorted as if that made things all okay. "Just a girl? You ain't just a girl. You're a weirdo girl! I don't want you coming near me, giving me any weirdo germs."

And he bounced backwards again.

"I mean it. Stay away from me, or else."

Then, with a growl of annoyance he turned and fled - or limped quickly - away, intent on putting as much distance between him and the dark-striped girl as possible.

Ursa blinked after Azar as he fled, exhaling tiredly. She didn't fancy any run in's with Kibela any time soon, trying to explain that limp her son had, and she could only hope the next encounter with a firekin boy wouldn't be so utterly bizzare.

Maybe this was what Yin-li meant when she said that all boys had cooties.
