The disappointment that they had not made a single movie with Batman and Wolverine in it disappeared; Wisp laughed instead, ate the rest of her brownie and leant back in her chair as though Ophelia really was the funniest person she had ever met. At least she kept her mouth shut and didn't spray brownie crumbs. "My feet are just narrow," she said, "it's impossible to find cute shoes, it is indefatigable." (This did not mean what Wisp thought it meant.) "That sucks, we won't be able to swap shoes. I can't swap shoes with Irelia either and Jace doesn't really wear any, just ratty sneakers, so I have to get all my own."
She tapped the table in an awkward drumbeat. "Wow," she said. "I can't believe you have a little brother. What'll that be like? We are a boy-free house zone."

Ophelia took a moment to eat a bit more of her sandwich, which was being sadly neglected due to the conversation. She chewed, swallowed, and shrugged. "Well, he's adorable and gets away with everything right now. But I still have to share a bathroom with him and I'm sure that'll wind up sucking once he's a bit older."
"I am, like, surrounded by guys," she continued, a bit mournfully. "You have totally got to come over and be my sister for a few days. Or, like, I need to find a mom. Or something."
She had never actually found her living situation problematic before now, but Wisp's complaining made her want to commiserate.

"I wish we could swap for a bit," said Wisp, who had finished the brownie and was picking at the non-brownie parts of her lunch now (a depressing 60% of lunch total). "The only non-lady in my family is Uncle Jack, and Grandpa Akili -- like, it's me and Rel and Jace and Mom and that is four girls, one house. You never get to use the bathroom and we have like so many bottles of shampoo in the shower. I bet when your brother grows up you won't have anyone stealing your facial cleanser."
She drank out of her waterbottle instead. "Maybe your dad could fall wildly in love with my mom and we could be the Brady Bunch," she said, though not very hopefully, as the chances of Beatrix doing this were around nil.

Ophelia was equally disinclined to seeing this as even remotely possible, although for her own reasons. She doubted her father had so much even looked at a woman in fifteen years. Sometimes she suspected sexual tension between him and Dama, but it seemed so unlikely that there was a better chance of the moon crashing down on the school in the next ten minutes.
"Yeah, but, like, the only female relative's I've got are Dad's sister and her kids, and they live all the way on the other side of the planet, practically, and she and Dad don't get along so I've only met her once, and that was to get the 'Now you're a woman' talk because Dad didn't want to do it himself." Or couldn't. Whatever.
She pointed suddenly to the pin on her lapel. "So, Bellamaria was way cool. You would have loved it. You totally need to come with us next time, okay?"

"Yesss," said her friend. "It will be done. Because, I am the only one who hasn't had adventures. I have had tiny adventures. I need some bigger, heroic adventures, please."
Bellamaria sounded like a pretty cool place to have them. There'd been a tug at Wisp to see other places, new ones, even more than those Chris had shown her; a part of her brain was searching out something she didn't even know.

"We're going to have, like, the best adventures," said Ophelia, nodding into her sandwich. "We're finally old enough to go places on our own, and I can start trying bigger worlds now."
She put her sandwich down and offered Wisp a high five.
"This is going to be, like, amazing. As soon as we figure out where to go."
After all, you were only a teenager once.

"Well, I figure I know where we can go this afternoon," said her friend, "and that's to your house so that I can see your baby brother!"
You really were only a teenager once; your concerns were teenager concerns. Ophelia and Wisp got on with the business of lunch.
