Where you anything else before steampunk?
  Yes
Yes but only for alittle bit, steampunk was the only thing I stuck with
Not really, I sorta did my own thing but nothing that you could call a "subculture" or "style"
  No, Steampunk is my first
I dress normal. I always have. I just like steampunk stuff. but not enough to dress like it
I only dress up for halloween parties and/or cosplays

I always loved the romantic goth style, and I found that I could easily go steampunk by switching the colors around and adding creative accessories. Oddly enough, whenever I dress in my black skirts and corsets, I hardly get a second glance. It's only when I break out the earth tones and compass that I really get stared at.

... i would have to say that for me, being harrased for what i do has become part of everyday life now.

back in year 7, i was labelled a geek (by being in the top maths set... yes, that instantly makes you a geek, since all the rest are chavs)

i decided that i was fed up of being labelled and bullied because of that, so i rebelled a bit. i still stayed in my maths set, but i started spiking my hair up and stuff... which everyone laughed at...

i then started to wear grey a lot and hang around with the goth crew... i felt like i was the only conscience there though, as they were all constantly trying to cut their wrists and that... but i liked them all the same, they were freindly and intelligent

one day i forgot to spike my hair in the morning... and i got laughed at for not having it spiky... wtf?

and then i discovered a lovely thing called Steampunk, and due to the harrassment i had before, i completely ignored what was said the 1st time i came into school with my blazer covered in brown patches, a clock gear on the chest pocket, and my hair dyed brown (shame is, i grew out of the blazer and gave it to a friend in the year below me when i left school, and i have never found any photos of it...)

these days, at college, i still wear lots of grey, although i always try to throw in some steampunk into all my outfits (unless it is important not to, like at a wedding or funeral or something)

but yeah, i guess the point of all this is that,
1. some people will always try to find a reason to make fun of you, they are just jerks.
2. most of those jerks are chavs (which makes me wish i lived in america or australia instead of good 'ole england, so that chavs dont exist)

Don't worry. In the US, we got socials. Like the chavs, but... broker. ha!

Earthy tones are attractive. Black is dull. When I go out, as an aristocrat, I'm pitch black with my Tux/trench coat. Or I go out military. Casual day for me is black in combo with either blood red, navy blue, earthy green, or violet.

I would love to wear my goggles to school- However whenever I do something 'different' I get harassed so I wear them at the mall.

Maybe you should just keep trying - from personal experience I can just say: they'll eventually grow bored of it.

Admittedly, back in school it did take almost two years until people got used to me wearing black lipstick and lots of leather and feathered accessories, but eventually they just left me alone. For me it was definitely worth it, enduring two years of harassment was better than a decade of "blending in".

And once you get out of school things tend to get better, anyway. At least it was for me, for unless I have to meet with a client that forces me to wear pinstripe suits, I rather tend to get compliments for my individual style instead of being harassed... xp

good words of advice. I do what I want. I dress "goth" and "steampunk" becuse I want to. not to fit in with a subculture or to impress people. I ignore people who bother me about it. Theres an awesome quote from Dr.Seuse that goes..

"Be who you are and say what you feel
Because those who mind don't matter
And those who matter don't mind."

Chavs exist everywhere, theyr just called by differant names. In the US we call them any of the following
Rednecks
Jocks (atlest I do)
Geeks
Dumbasses

Here is yet another Goth, lol.
I hardly dress up anymore, because now I'm old enough to know that clothes don't make the person, and I don't feel the need to show who I "am" by what I wear.
I tend to dress up on Halloween if I remember.
Besides, I get enough stares cos I have dreadlocks that I have just dyed a deep purple cos I love the colour. Haha~ (^_^)
FYI, the hairstyle is just that: a hairstyle. I'm not Rasta or anything like that; it's just easier for me to care for, and something I always had an interest in doing (and finally did).
Also, even though I love steampunk, there are still some things about the Gothic style that I love as well, so I haven't given up my 'goth' music, etc. in favour of steampunk or anything else.
Someday when I'm extremely bored and wanting to make a costume, I'll see about trying to combine the two (although it might turn out horrid). XD

I'm actually into Classical Lolita, which has a distinctly Victorian bent to it. I could never get into any kind of fashion until Lolita cropped up.

I enjoy dressing up in it, though I feel like I rarely have a chance to go anywhere in it anymore. :3 Makes me feel cute, like a Victorian child...

I've had a few weird comments about it (one of my co-workers at the last place I worked was a jerk), but mostly people think that's cool...

Right now I'm making up some more Steampunk skirts to wear around. Fits into my wardrobe quite well. smile

I've never been in a subculture. I dress normally(boringly), jeans, sweater, t-shirts. I've never been into subcultures and thought they were dumb. It's pretty silly to preach non-comformity and then look like clones of all your little friends. But when I saw steampunk, mabe subcultures aren't all dumb. At my highschool there were no subcultures except people who were fell into them by definition. Jocks, weird kids, country black people who thought they were hood, and rednecks who thought they were preps. Not subcultures, people who play sports, act strange, or live in a certain area.

The only thing similar is my hair. I always had long hair, and straight since I was a teenager. When I cut it to short afro and people got mad because they couldn't live through me. Or they make comments about how "they wouldn't do it rolleyes ." My confidence surprises me, I think I can handle wearing steampunk.

Well before steampunk I wore a considerable amount of black, thus labling me as "Goth" or "emo" however I've began to wear a lot more earthtones and I quite often Wear my goggles in public places, school, mall, traveling ect my school has become accustomed to my odd fashion sense.

I'm quite interested in Steampunk fashion and would go to the ends of the earth (Or several thrift stores in the city I live in XD) to get steampunk clothing.

One of my favorite commercials was actually from MTV. It showed this cartoon "punk" guy screaming: "I'M PUNK ROCK! I'M A NON-CONFORMIST! ALL MY FRIEND'S MOHAWKS HAVE FOUR SPIKES! MINE ONLY HAS THREE!"

I laughed so hard because that pretty much sums up my feelings about subcultures. I think they're ridicules. I always have. I always will. I don't dress "Steampunk." I usually wear clothing that's closer to the 50's retro look. A friend of mine even once called me "cute Rockabilly." (This is probably the part where I should reveal that I am, in fact, a lady.) I wear what I think looks cute on me.

That said, I do, however like the artistry in Steampunk. I'm a visual development major. I like the steampunk aesthetic. I think it's visually interesting. Same thing with Goth and Punk and CyberPunk and what ever else you may want to throw in. I think they're visually interesting. Does that mean I am goth/punk/raver/platypus? God no.

I tend to lean towards the "goth" end of the spectrum. I don't dress in that style very much, primarily due to a lack of funds.(mostly, I wear plain t-shirts or shirts that I recieved for free from doing tech work for a musical, and a pair of jeans).

I checked out the whole "indie" thing for a while, but it felt so fake...disliking a band simply because too many people enjoy their music is not a good reason to dislike them.

Honestly, you'd never be able to tell by looking at me that I'm into Steampunk. I'm rather shy, and don't like drawing attention to myself.

I have always been very old-fashioned in my dress. Vests, slacks, I don't own a shirt without buttons from top to bottom. I didn't own my first non-pocket watch until I was 23. The style seems so very noble, and refined, especially compared to the self-preening peacock-ish fashion that people wear today.

Aw, my goth kin are invading <3

Joking aside, there is are a number of other subcultures that are getting intrigued by steampunk, it's very interesting. I myself still strongly identify with goths, but not that I have to refuse to wear pink. I dress in which ever style fits me, and the overall look changes with my mood.

Let's see, before goth and steam really clicked for me, I was very into anime cons and cosplay. I still am, to some extent, but not quite as much.

I also battled being labeled a "geek" for a while. I loved being weird, but I didn't know if I was geeky enough to be a geek. I gave in, call me a geek as well if you with. It's a label I now wear with pride.

I don't think there were any subcultures I tried but didn't work for me, though I did have a brief fling with wiccan studies, which has helped me sort out my spiritual ideas. Wouldn't call myself a witch even though I love to pick up the Witches' Almanac.
