According to http://www.ou.org/torah/tt/5760/pinchas60/aliya.htm:

Clarification... Aharon and his four sons were anointed as kohanim. All their descendants are kohanim from birth. Pinchas was not born to a kohen, since he was born before Elazar was anointed. He was originally not included in the Kehuna of his grandfather, father, and uncles. Pinchas became a kohen in the unique way - by G-d's decree. In other words, there are three ways to be a kohen. Five people were anointed as kohanim by G-d's command. One was given the kehuna by G-d. All other kohanim that ever existed or ever will exist are kohanim because they were born to a kohen.

Pinchas was not originally born a kohen, since he was born before Hashem decreed that Aharon and his descendants would be kohanim. Pinchas was already born at the time of the decree, and therefore would not have been a kohen by birth. Pinchas became a kohen only by Hashem's especial decree, which is given in parashat Pinchas. His personal decree was made retroactively because of his zeal for Torah principles, which he exhibited in the previous parashah (parashat Balak).

Also, let's revisit the original intent of this thread: Ashkenazim and Sephardim (and, ahem, Mizrachim and Teimanim -- I'm Mizrachi, for instance).

A person's Judaism is determined by their mother (or by conversion): If the mother is a Jew, the child is a Jew.

A person's caste and tribe are determined by the father: If the father is a Kohen or Levi (and the father is married to the mother, who is either a virgin or a widow at the time of marriage), then the child is a Kohen or Levi. If the father is a member of the tribe of Naftali, the child is also Naftali; if the father is a Binyamini, so is the child.

In modern times we have lost most of our knowledge of tribal affiliations, but for the knowledge of who is a Levi or Kohen; but we still count tribal affiliations in a broad sense. That is to say, if the parents are in a mixed marriage (an Ashkenazi and a Mizrachi, a Sephardi and a Teimani), the child is considered to belong to the father's descent group. Therefore, Bob Dylan's father is/was Sephardi, so Bob Dylan is Sephardi with an Ashkenazi mother, not Ashkenazi with a Sephardi father.

I've got a good friend whose parents are Ashkenazi. She was born Ashkenazi. However, when she married, her husband was (is) Sephardi. Rather than become a mixed marriage, she elected to follow his community's Sephardi customs, and became Sephardi herself (one of the only ways to "switch" from one descent group to another is for a woman to marry a man of the other community); they and their children are Sephardim. However, even if my friend had chosen to remain Ashkenazi while married to a Sephardi man, her children would have been Sephardim because their father is Sephardi.

Great news for converts: First become a Jew. Then, after studying the customs of the various communities, a convert can actively and consciously choose which descent group and minhagim (customs) he will take upon himself (or she will take upon herself). I strongly suggest going Ashkenazi first, though, because once you've become halachically Jewish and observant, and have then eaten kitniyot (rice, grains, legumes, and their derivatives) during Passover, that's it -- you're Sephardi for life. Just like conversion to Judaism itself, it's not a decision to take lightly.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it true that among Sephardi, Teimani and Mizrachi Jews there's only one way to practice (the way that would be considered Orthodox, I guess)?

Ofra Haza was Mizrachim!

*siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh*

Why are you posting anti-Semitic myths? How is it that not a single Ashkenazi Jews looks like a Mongol if they're supposedly descended from them? Why do Ashkenazi Jews share genetic links to Sephardi Jews and Middle Easterners?

The Khazar "theory" (if you can even call it that) has been thoroughly disproven. The only people who still propagate it are Neo-Nazis and their Muslim allies.
It's not an Anti-Semetic myth. I know because I'm Jewish myself, and a Rabbi actually endorsed the myth. It's actually pretty cool, just think about it, we Ashkenazim are Asians, ASIANS!!!! The coolest race on Earth, I actually feel sorry for the Sephardim now. And btw, there is definitely genetic truth to it, if you look very closely at Ashkenazi Jews you will see a slight Asian slant to their eyes. I know me and my family have them.

Yes, and the Jewfro is proof Ashkenazim are actually African-Americans.

Again, genetics show Ashkenazim are related to Sephardim and Arabs. No mention of Mongols or Asians.

You're right, kingpinsqeezels. Sephardim, Teimanim (Yemenite), Mizrachim (also called Eidot ha-Mizrach -- northern Africa including Egypt), Jews of Asia including the Indian subcontinent, and Africa... either you're observant ("orthodox") or you're not. No divisions, no factions, no splintering. I say I'm Orthodox so that the Ashkenazi majority will understand that I'm observant, not because I'm actually Orthodox. I'm observant Mizrachi. But if I say observant, many Ashkenazi will wonder if I'm observant Orthodox, observant Conservative, or observant Reform. "How does she observe?" they'll want to know.

Mind you, there are many different ways to be observant as a Sephardi, Mizrachi, Teimani, Indian, Asian, or African Jew. Some communities use very slight variations in the prayers (a word here or there, an additional phrase tossed in, praying certain prayers only on certain days, having a slightly different order to the daily prayers); some have slightly different interpretations of how to prepare for Passover; some communities allow wigs while others insist on only a hat or scarf; and so on. But basically, if you say you're observant, it means that you consider yourself bound by all the laws in the Torah, and strive to the fullest to observe them as well as you understand how to do so.

FireMiko-Kagomechan:
1. Did YOUR rabbi endorse the myth of the Khazars, or did you just hear about "a rabbi" without verifying whether this person actually existed?

2. Don't feel sorry for Sephardim (Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and some French Jews). Don't feel sorry for Teimanim (Yemenite Jews). Don't feel sorry for Mizrachi Jews (Jews of Arab and Persian descent, as well as the Jews of -ahem- Asia including the Indian subcontinent). The Talmud posits the question, "Why did Hashem create the entire human race from one man and one woman, instead of creating many of each?" It also answers the question: "So that no one could say to another, My ancestors are greater than yours." Asians are not the coolest race on earth. There is no coolest race. Learn this lesson and take it into your heart.

The reason I bring that up is because I find that more appealing. One of the reasons I could never really relate to my Christianity was because of all this division that went on among the protestants (and I certainly wasn't about to be a Catholic). It wasn't about G-d or Jesus it was about who was the right kind of Christian. Only Pentecostals are going to heaven, only Church of Christ will get into heaven, only Baptists are going to heaven! The rest will burn in the fiery chasms of hell! No thanks. Instead of constantly looking down at the other people who make up my culture, I'd like to see them as mentors or friends.

I've heard evidence to support the myth. Apparently the skulls of Ashkenazim at the back are incredibly similar in shape to Mongols. I, however, doubt this fact.

And while we're talking about race: What is the difference between race and people? Excluding any mention of skin colour, that is.

I'd say it's the culture thing that makes certain races so "cool". People are intrigued with what they don't have, especially white people because for the most part we've lost our culture. It's more exotic to most people to be Japanese than American, let's put it that way.

It's true, people are scared of missing out. Or jealous. I do have to say, as a whole, Japan is a better country to live in than the US.

It might also be to do with the fact America actually has very little culture of its own outside of consumerism, as you were only formed a few hundred years ago whereas Japan has been around since... well... Israel. So it's natural you want to borrow some off Europe and Asia.

Asia is cool DO NOT DISS ASIA!!!! And ahem, anyways back on subject, that evidence about Ashkenazim having the same types of skulls as the Mongols is no myth, it's true, and I have all the links to prove it, I am not making this stuff up. Deny all you want but I have the evidence to prove it. And also, on a lighter note, this probably explains why us Ashkenazim love Chinese food XDD.

Please Please PLEASE stop fabricating things about one race being better (or "cooler", if you must) than another. If there is one thing banned in Judaism, it is superiority. We suffered enough because of it.

And can I please see these links?
