((Woot Kaye. WHAT. A. POST. You're so awesome.
... stare xd ))
Shef jumped to his feet, failing to notice the something above, and picked up the nearest branch that he could hold. Sweat was beginning to form on his brow from his exertions for the past hot hour, and the boy focused as he slashed at apples with the tip of the branch. It did not reach very far--not far enough.

(( Oh shut up, Z. xd ))
The shining light came closer now... It was glowing with a spiritual light, and looked like... a god? The collection of floating, transparent, stone-like parts quickly descended from the sky, colored a radiant yellow, except for dark red orb in the middle. Huge, majestic wings were spread, and the shining light began to shrink in size.
Smaller, smaller, smaller... it shrank smaller and smaller, until finally it resembled an ordinary forest owl. The owl shot downward right onto Shef, making an enormous cloud of dust that could be seen for miles.

"Oof!" Shef exclaimed as he was pummeled into the ground. His branched snapped, and the tree above was relieved of almost half its apples... and half of its branches, in one moment. A shower of apples fell through the dust, most of them landing on Shef's head.
"Owowow... what the heck?" He asked, blinded from the dust and unseeing of whatever had hit him. "What hit me?"

The owl lay on the ground close to Shef, it's head stuck in a nearby gopher hole.
"Mmffmffmff!!" it cried from under the ground, "Mmffmfffmfmfmff! MMFF!!!"

Shef stood up slowly. He didn't realize for a full ten seconds that he was standing on an owl's wing. Shef stared down, uncomprehending for another ten seconds, before he jumped back and off of the creature.
"God! An owl! Wait--an owl hit me...?"
Nonetheless, Shef knelt down and gently pried the large owl from its gopher hole. Said gopher chattered angrily from underneath.

The owl gasped for air, coughing and wheezing. He looked up at Shef, his big owl eyes gleaming in gratitude, and then shot an angry look at the chattering gopher.
"Oh, shut up!" he scowled, "I told you I was sorry!"

Shef dropped the owl and stepped backward. "...Talking owl. No way. Who are you?"
This owl spoke. Shef knew immediately that it could only be one thing--a Guardian. But whose? Not his... his father's...?

The owl coughed a few more times and stood up, ruffling his feathers. He then cleared his throat to speak.
"My name is Regond," said the owl, "and I have come from the land of Ether to be your Spirit Guardian."

Regond was immediately being shaken by not-too-gentle, if unintentionally shaking, hands. "Where's my dad? What happened to him? He's been gone for months."

Regond paused for a moment, but did not answer.
"Your father sent me here to guide and protect you." he said, "I made a vow to him that I would whip you into shape, and I do not intend to break it."

Shef's mouth hung ajar for a brief moment. "Yeah, whatever," he waved the owl's words away. "But where is he? Where, Regond?"
