Fish smiled sympathetically down at her. In a way, some of the children who had joined later in the game were at a disadvantage because they had missed that crucial period when everyone was at the same point, when no one was more powerful than anyone else. Now, of course, Writ was more god than human, Ciro was a powerhouse, and Fish supposed that even he himself could pose a serious threat if he ever so chose to pose one.

"No problem," he said. "I'll help you get caught up."

He tried to think of somewhere that might be useful for Keeya, and remembered a dusty little park he had passed through a few months ago. "Have you ever been to Micro-Zimbabwe?" he asked. He paused at the next cross-street and studied the signs. If you wanted to get anywhere in the City, the easiest way was to follow the historical references in the street signs. In the Scene they were all musicians, but a while back McCartney Boulevard had turned into Siam Street. If they kept going, he was pretty sure they'd hit an intersection with Mugabe street. And if not, Mandela street was a bit of a long way around, but it would get them there eventually.

"Just follow me," he said, and started walking again.

"I usually don't get too far away from Broadway and rest of the Theater district between Middling and Uppers, usually just branching out a few blocks either way to draw attention to plays we're going to be doing at our small theater." Keeya put her hands into her coats pouch, smiling softly, "I think I went to Micro-Zimbabwe back when I was little and my hair looked mostly like corn rows for some sort of festival. My Aunt used to live there."

She frowned softly, "We used to go to so many cultural events, but when the trunk of the tree got too big and became too painful for my Uncle to trim down and hide as hair, I dont get to go out as much as I used to. Only the theater district, where I can wander without being seen as anything more then an actress with really good makeup rather then... What I am."

Fish looked down at the girl and pointed at her hair. "That's not something to be ashamed of," he said. He laughed. "I've got gills and scales and webbed hands and you don't see me trying to hide it. You met Ciro and Writ, right? No shame there. We're different because we're better."

He marched ahead of her for a bit until they got to the intersection for Mugabe Street. He took a left.

"There's a park in Micro-Zimbabwe," he explained. "Their irrigation system's busted, but I think there's lots of native plants kind of barely hanging on. We should go help out, huh?" Between his water powers and her growth powers, they ought to be able to bring it back. Parks were something of a rarity in the City, so it would be a pity to let it die completely.

as they walked, the style of the buildings changed from Asian to more straight up urban. Brightly colored tapestries hung from the balconies in places. Even the air smelled different.

"I'm not really ashamed of it -- and at the moment its covered more because of the cold then anything, but my family has heard of those with 'oddities' such as us vanishing, and of people trying to hunt them down -- one thing about the theater district, everyone's a gossip." The lanky girl gave him a toothy smile, "Mostly its a case of trying to keep me safe and away from the likes of you and those blacksuits."

She cocked her head slightly in thought, "Well, too much drought is dangerous, but a lot of the trees at least are made to survive them. However, tree's, in general, are such a rareity these days, its best to give them as much help as possible."

Fish nodded. Blacksuits were bad news. "In that case, you're smart to try to say safe," he said, "But don't ever let anyone make you feel like you're less than them. Because for all they know someday we might all be kissing your shoes."

He laughed and wheeled around a corner. There was a vacant lot here, and at one point it must have been landscaped rather nicely, but now it was mostly dust and a few struggling plants. Fish cocked an eyebrow at Keeya and manifested a swirling orb of water in his hand.

"Ready to do our good deed for the decade?" he asked.

She looked over the lot feeling a little down hearted -- there were only a few trees, which she could feel were not doing well, and the rest of the plants might as well have not been there with how useful she'd be for them, Damn, why, WHY did she have to be just a tree goddess? And limited to African trees?!

"I... I can try. You're powers will likely be more useful to the rest of the group but I can help the tree's at least. A little shade would help the water from evaporating as quickly from the shrubs and grasses..." She moved over and pointed at a tree that was being kept behind a fense, keeping people away from it, and she pointed it out to Fish "Just keep a good distance from that Candelabra tree over there when your watering it -- they have needles and poisonous latex and the fumes are dangerous. They used to be used as fences.." She moved closer to it, "Well, at least dont touch it. You could likely get close to it anyway.."

- Keeya -

The girl blinked at the quiet voice in her head, then grinned, holding her hands to the fense, "Could we have some water over here? I can almost hear Edinkira and it wont do much good making it healthier if it can't drink."

Fish followed Keeya over to the tree she had her attentions turned to and focused on projecting a jet of water at its roots. He couldn't make the pressure too high, or it might damage the tree, or drown it. He wondered what kind of strength he could put behind the jet if he wanted to go all out, but now wasn't the time for that.

"Alright," he said to Keeya, once he felt like the tree had been sufficiently watered. "Do your thing."

Keeya smiled, though her right eye twitched once nervously as she braced herself and held her hands out, eyes closing slowly as she focused, searching for that connection she felt with the tree that looked like a hybrid between a cactus, a tree, and a scrub brush.

Slowly leaves and flowers budded at the tips, the water sucking quickly into the earth, "Try giving a bit more water, then we can move to that Umbrella Thorn Acacia -- the "African looking" tree. All of these suckers usually get Monsoon like rains in the winter, so dont be too worried about drowning them." She smiled slightly as the tree slowly began to reach higher, and pulled away -- no point making it grow, just make it healthy.

She stepped back, nodding to Fish to continue watering as she went to inspect the acacia, "Its kinda funny how many of these tree's have thorns and spines... And some, like the candlabra, poisonus latex's.. Pretty 'violent' for tree's.."

Fish gave the spiny tree a bit more water and then moved towards the tree with a wide, flat mat of branches that Keeya was inspecting. He thought he'd seen one of these in a movie once when he was little. Something about talking lions.

He aimed a jet of water at the base.

"Starting to feel better about this stuff?" he asked her.

"I little.. There's only so much one can do with bonzai's after all before they stop being bonzai's.. And its easier adjusting those that already exist then making new ones from scratch." Keeya flashed a smile back at Fish, her feet smacking on the wet soil, before her eyes closed once more to tend to the acacia. After the dead looking tree regained its leaves before moving to the last "Tree" in the area -- a Jackalberry Tree.

It didnt take too long for that one to be perked up, and she stepped back, looking around and inspecting her handywork, "You know.. I actually feel a little stronger after that, rather then tired. Do you think I should try to add a tree to the park? Might be too much for it to support though if the irregation system has been down for long enough to cause this sort of drought damage."

Fish thought about it for a while. "You know," he said, "I might know someone who can fix the irrigation system." Hadn't Poseidon said Miss Floros built the irrigation system in his greenhouses? But Miss Floros was on her honeymoon, and he didn't want to be the one to call her back.

"How would you go about adding another 'tree'?" asked Fish, his interest piqued.

Maybe, he rationalized, if the neighborhood people saw that the trees were healthy once more, they'd start taking care of the park again.

"Well.." Keeya looked around before pointing and moving over to a nice clear spot near a bench that was out in the middle and away from any shade, "It won't be that big -- I usually just get them started and make them grow and treat them as bonzai's -- with my 'hair' I need all the practice I can get working with miniature trees, but I can try to get it to a full sized sapling...."

she wiggled her toes in her shoes, trying to tap back into the power she had discovered earlier that year. She had been so frustrated about having no powers that she had spent much of the spring sitting there looking at dirt filled pots and giving herselves headaches trying to get something, anything to grow, trying different methods to force her sleepy power out into the open. She had spent hours every day, and was to the point of nearly screaming in frustration, sobbing "Grow" at the pots and banging her desk with the flat of her palm when she tried one last method before giving up, trying more to ease it out then force it.

Thankfully, once she finally was able to tap into her powers, it got a lot easier to call it up. She lowered her hand to hover over the spot she wanted, and closed her eyes, letting the tingling warmth fill her, picturing fluttering birds, chattering monkeys, the low growl of a leopard. She could almost hear the distant drums as she imagined a large Baobab, holding them all.

The young girl opened her eyes, staring through the spot as a sprout formed under her fingers, and she slowly unfolded herself focusing it to grow, taller, fuller, roots squirming against the ground, braking up the earth undernieth it and causing the dry land to swell, rises and crack. Finally, she stopped, panting as a young baobab, branches filled with leaves and fruit, stood before them only about ten feet tall and still young, but thick barreled and strong, "It's going to need a TON of water now..."

-you did well, Keeya..-

Keeya laughed softly, grinning, "It's not bad for the first time I've grown something more then a foot tall... It should get easier with practice, but.. There's not many places to practice growing trees.."

Fish whistled a long, low note and pointed a generous jet of water at the tree. Even if it was just a 'sapling', it was one of the biggest trees he'd ever seen. Then again, in a city where trees were a rarity, a two foot tall bush could be called impressive.

"Anything else you want to try to do?" he asked.
PostPosted: Sun Mar 01, 2009 1:40 pm

"uuuh.... Well, I could try and see if I'm immune to the Candlabra latex sap, but I'm not looking forward to blisters if I'm not." She tapped her foot, rubbing her chin in thought. She then went over to the acacia tree, "Stay over there, I want to try something..."

She got closer and focused on a spot, her back turned to the plant. Focusing, Keeya pointed to the spot, tapping into the plant.

Nothing happened and she pointed again, trying to raise the energy up. The branches rustled and the tree groaned, and yet nothing happened.

"Hmmn..." She moved suddenly, "HYA!"

-swipthump- "OW!" A thorn from the acacia stuck itself through her hoody and into the trunk of her head tree.

-swipthump- -swipthump-

Her eyes went buggy as slowly the tree began to randomly shoot thorns, "aw crappit..." She cut the power off between her and the tree, and ran, shielding her head and neck as it rained thorns for a few brief moments, and hissed as she neared Fish, pulling her now blood stained arms down and pulling a thorn out of her and the cloth of her jacket, "well, that was a failed attempt... HSSH!"

The Tree Godling pulled another out of her arm, and reached up to touch a few pinning her hood to her 'hair', "Oh gods this isn't gonna be a pleasant experience getting all of these out." She sniffled, eyes tearing up and her voice a low keen -- she had at least twenty of them sticking out of her body in random spots, but mostly on her head, shoulders, and arms.

It had all happened so fast that Fish wasn't sure what happened. One moment the girl had been over by the tree, and now she was here and looking like a human pincushion. Still, he couldn't help but feel sympathetic. She was experimenting with her powers, and who hadn't been hurt once or twice while practicing? He tsked his tongue in exasperation and began to work one of the huge splinters out of her shoulder.

Needless to say the hoodie was probably ruined, he thought.

"Do you mind if I get you wet?" he asked. "You don't know what kind of toxins and pesticides these things have absorbed. It would suck to get an infection."
