“Well…” the medic started slowly as if trying to buy time while she gathered her thoughts. It was an unusual question as everyone knew that the dreaded white sickness was horrible and contagious. “With the knowledge that has been passed down from medic to medic, it’s pretty clear it’s a contagious illness. My mentor did speak of a few cases where the presence of an afflicted individual had caused the birth of a hatchling with the condition but we don’t see that anymore… which I guess it’s because we’re much more educated and careful.”

She stopped for a moment, tilting her head to examine the wound.

“Sick children tend to learn slower and start flying very late in their lives… and we know that their vision might be affected as well. It’s just dreadful. I wish the very best to that little one that seems to have made it all the way to graduation.” And she really looked like she meant it.

“There. All done!” the deep woods stepped away from the bard and nudged the companion. The small creature dropped a berry near Birch’s talons and started moving the flasks back to the storage cavity. Whirlwind suppressed a smile as the berries were the usual treat to her tiny well behaved customers.

Birch nodded as Whirlwind delivered the small lecture about the white sickness. He had asked for it, but he could almost feel his eyes glaze over a little bit. The little one he had seen during the Fledgling Festival must be very lucky to have made it that far in life. If the chick Whirlwind talked about had suffered from the disease it might not be the one Bracken was looking for. But before he had the time to examine this train of thought further, the medic announced that she was done and the Mus scurried to his side to leave a berry.

He stared at the berry for a moment before picking it up. It was a fairly ordinary berry, but as Birch ate it he started to relax, and felt a lot better than he had just a little while ago. He might be an adult and not a child, but the little offering managed to put a smile on his beak and also managed to make him feel thoroughly cared for.

"Thank you," he said and smiled at the companion, before seeking Whirlwinds eyes, "And thanks to you Whirlwind. If you're ever in need of my services... I really owe you one."

The white mus eyed the bard with obvious surprise before going about his business. He wasn’t exactly used to being thanked for his small services from adult sentinels as most just ignored him or gave him a funny look that made the little creature want to run and stay hidden for the duration of the consult.

“Not at all, really no trouble...” Whirlwind said quickly fluffing up considerably at what she saw as heartfelt appreciation. Suddenly her eyes widened and she smiled tentatively. “But I suppose that if you ever get a bit of free time, you can always go the nearby enclave and give the children a song or a story… you know, from my part.”

"I will," Birch said with a genuine smile, "I'll try to come up with a nice story for them, and I'll dedicate it to Whirlwind, the excellent Medic. I think they'll like that."

He would make a point to keep his promise, and if he happened to have time to tell stories from Whirlwind in several different enclaves... It might give her some extra business. He started to prepare himself for flight, preening his flight feathers without being bothered by the scratch on his back. His spirits had lifted and he was back to his old cheerful self. Finally able to focus on something else than the mean Seeker and his own misery.

"It feels much better," he said, and then got a mischievous glint in his eye, "A Mudbeak story perhaps? That might encourage them to avoid hurting themselves. But I wouldn’t want to ruin your business."

“And maybe they won’t be so scared next time they have to meet me.” Whirlwind tried to smile but her expression showed some discomfort at being addressed as “the excellent Medic”, alternating between shyness and lack of confidence.

“It’s better that the business suffers rather than their fragile little wings. The worst it could happen to me is to be reassigned to another location. Besides, I seem to have enough clientele as it is, if we consider the adults who run into moody sentinels…” Oh dear, was that a joke? Was she being… Noctus forbid... was she being coy?

The mere thought had the medic jumping backwards barely missing the entrance of her hollow. With a silly hop to the side, the fluffed up shape of the medic clumsily entered into the secluded place.

“Well, then… ah… good evening, Birch.” Drat! She even remembered his name. “All the best to you.”

"Oh those," Birch said and grinned, "Terrible patients those adults." It was apparent that he was feeling better. His eartufts were held higher and he acted more like a bard and less like a sulky fledgling. It was time to go home.

He finished his flight preparations with a light stretch, still not feeling any discomfort. And with an elaborate bow that he usually saved for big audiences, he left his perch. It felt good to stretch his wings a little and he made a few lazy turns before heading off. The silly flying was not particularly fancy, and could hardly be called dancing. It served no real purpose, he was just feeling happy, that was all.

"Good evening Whirlwind," he called before leaving her territory, "And thank you!"

Whirlwind’s tufts perked up as if mirroring Birch’s. She was glad he hadn’t noticed her awkwardness – or if he had, at least that he chose to ignore it. She couldn’t hide her relief as they neared the end of the consult.

“You’re welcome. And good evening to you as well!” She replied quickly as he bid his farewell and the medic tilted her head at the simple acrobatics shaking her head a little but all the while unable to suppress a tiny smile.
