Xtopher TINSTAAFL Who says browns blacks and whites are the only colors for steampunk? I say you make it what you want, just as long the basics aren't forgotten about. I think most people aren't saying those are the only acceptable colors, they are just a good start. A better rule, I'd say, would be to stick with "earthy" tones. Steampunk would look pretty alright with darker red hues and oranges (if done right) I would wager. I mean, that's my own biased opinion, but I would think acceptions are out there. Certain colors as pinks, purples, lighter (or even darker) greens... not so much (well, maybe if lolita was brought in with steampunk) Those colors are a good start though, I have to agree. 3nodding

I say that it's all in the attitude. If I had the materials I think I could do steampunk with pink or a floral pattern, I know that the thought has someone cringing. It works with Satin purples and blacks. It depends upon the tones and how you put it all together.
But this isn't about just fashion. A person could go to a comic convention and not dress up, it doesn't make them any less of a fan, I feel the same goes for Steampunk.
And as for age I'm going to hit 24 soon and these numbers have yet stopped me from indulging in things that I enjoy.

A better rule, I'd say, would be to stick with "earthy" tones. conveniently, I usually wear earthy tones every day! and dress pants. They would have to be my everyday tie to Victorian clothing. Though my actual steampunk outfit that is being worked on is blue so far...and my very victorian dress is green and white. But age matters not! personally I think the world could clean up nicely if everyone wore more dressy clothing.

17. Turning 18 next month. mrgreen I don't find it suprising that most of us are adults in this guild, since it appears to me (being in high school still) that noone ever hears about steampunk, because teens nowadays narrow their minds to the pop-cultures that only the TV puts out. Refusing to explore beyond the stereotypes our schools typically already have in them.

It has been my experience that, by and large, those individuals who are drawn to steampunk couldn't give a whit about fitting in to some subculture. For us, it's all about elegant style and creativity. As far as the colors we wear go, I think that brown predominates simply because the sepia photographs from the late 1800s make everything look brown. The Victorians wore lots of color...not the least of which was black. Which stands to reason if you live in an industrialized city where everything's covered in soot.

very true...which is why I think it would have been a very good idea to have parasols, beside the reason that they keep of the sunlight. (I need to get one...)
Awesome, Freedom! ^^

If you can make it work please grace us with pictures! Also, because everyone else is doing it and I secretly want to be popular. 22 years old.

Pink is more versatile than most people give it credit, but you could easily get that sort of sassy pixie attitude of pink mixed with the existing self-reliant attitude of steampunk.

I think pink would look lovely on people other than myself...if it was a dusty rose shade or something. I think that would look nice amidst the browns. I dont wear pink..ever, because I'm not a huge fan and I have orange hair, which seems to clash rather horribly. But If I was wearing a wig, I would!

Unlike what most other movements think in the Steampunk Community you aren't expected to have a 24hr identity based on it. It's about having fun and indulging in creativity and Victorian aesthetics from time to time and with others of like mind. I've yet to run into any of the messy social politics that other communities have among the steampunks... then again this could be because then we'd have to figure out a creative an less bloody answer to duels.... hmmm new idea to brainstorm with the others... *runs off with notebook to discus with others*
