Agreed. Silverbirch was all for better dyes. Besides, it made perfect sense to her for combatants to be better 'equipped' compared to bards and other entertainers. The Mist looked up and smiled at Fernfeather's words. Not bad, Madam Fern said. Easily content, those few words were enough to lift up her spirits.
"I say, Ma'am," Silverbirch spoke, prey (or not) forgotten. She let her eyes sweep through the forest, letting them settle briefly on the Elite before darting off to survey the surrounding. There was a brief pause as she considered the audacity of her intention. Talking about dyes had gotten her excited earlier, and now, with the night seeming to call out to her, the Mist had become rather restless.
"With a night so fine, what do you think of a race?"
A race, with an Elite. Silverbirch shuddered with excitement and nerves at the thought. Since graduation she had never had a proper race against another, not to say a superior. Win or lose, it would be a much needed test to gauge her own abilities.

The not-quite-apology seemed to be accepted and Fernfeather was relieved that she didn’t have to talk more about Silverbirch’s dye. A hint of a smile ruined the stony elite façade at the suggestion of a race. Interesting. Very interesting, and why not? She had wanted to evaluate the young Mist, and a race sounded like a refreshing way to spend part of the night.
"You know the way to the shelter north of here," Fernfeather said, making it more of a statement than a question. If the young scout was even remotely accustomed to the area she would know of the shelter that did not belong to any territory and that was frequently used by combatants passing through. It would be a fair distance to fly, she reckoned. The shelter was near enough to offer a fairly quick flight, but far enough away to make the race a matter of speed, stamina and navigation.
"First one there," she said, still with that hint of a smile, "And I'm not going to bail you out if you cut through too many inhabited territories.

Silverbirch nodded. She knew that place, but just the thought of the amount of fair maneuvering from where they currently were sent a shiver through her. But no matter, she was ready and raring to go.
A quick preen to make sure all feathers were in order (and also to calm the growing nervousness within her), and, wings outstretched, the Mist stole a quick glance at the Elite beside her.
"I'll try not to have that happen too many times," came the reply, beaks parted in a mischievous, playful grin. "Ready?"
"GO!"

To her satisfaction Fernfeather managed to get a good start, but she could hear that Silverbirch was not far behind her and there was no room for mistakes. Her experience and training gave her a certain edge, but Silverbirch's youth and ambition would be dangerous to underestimate. Using a familiar route she settled into a pace she knew she could hold for a long time and started to make a flight plan.
Her comment about territories had been half joke and half serious warning. Every Scout knew that there was times when the fastest route ran through another Sentinel's territory. However, taking such a route through the wrong territory could mean a pair of sharp talons to the face and a very long detour. The Elite knew many of the residents in this area and that gave her the advantage of knowing where she could take a shortcut into occupied territories without too much danger. Some might call it cheating, but Fernfeather was used to ruthlessly exploit her own advantages. She would not be in the position she was today if she had fussed too much about being completely fair in all situations.
With a powerful hoot to announce her presence and her intention to pass through she banked and headed straight into a territory. It was a shorter route to their goal, but things might get hairy if Rockslide was in a foul mood, or if someone she didn't know had kicked him out from his territory. But hey, a bit of risk taking could be fun.

It was a decent start for Silverbirch, who was simply thankful for getting off to a horrid start - for now. Fernfeather had a great start, and the sight of the Elite some distance ahead of the Scout brought out the spirit of competition in her and kicked it into full gear.
Silverbirch tailed the Wildtype for some time, keeping her in sight while gaining speed steadily. Though Silverbirch knew her way around the area she was not completely familiar with every bit of it, and the Elite might know of some valuable shortcuts. To her surprise Fern seemed to be heading straight towards an occupied territory, if her memory served her right.
Not about to take the risk, Silverbirch banked to the left for a stretch of unclaimed forest. Despite knowing a fair amount of good-natured Sentinels who did not mind intrusions, the memory of a nasty encounter during her first week of duty had made her weary of cutting through territories unless during emergencies.

Unfortunately Fernfeather was too clever for her own good sometimes, and what should have been a shortcut turned into a small detour. She wasn't met with hostility, but the trees and vegetation in the territory was thicker than she had anticipated. Due to the difficult flying conditions she had to slow down slightly to be able to avoid branches and thorny trees. And unless Silverbirch ran into some kind of trouble her initial advantage would now be lost.

Fortunately for Silverbirch, the path she chose did not bring her into a patch of thick forest. Rather, the trees stood rather pleasantly apart, though not enough to make it an eerie open.
This was enough for Silverbirch to stretch her wings comfortably. Flying lower out of the way of overhanging vines and the occasional branches, the Mist took this chance to close the distance between Fernfeather and herself, not knowing that the other had flown into rough vegetation.
Was it enough? She certainly hoped so.

She finally left the thickly forested mess of a territory, only to discover that Silverbirch was now ahead of her. There was no helping it; she would have to risk another possible shortcut if she should stand a chance against the quick-winged Mist. Or she could push herself to the limit, chasing Silverbirch's tail feathers. No, she'd rather risk another detour.
This time the territories she cut through were easier to navigate, and more like when she last had visited. The inhabitant of the first territory hooted a quick greeting in response to hers, but the other was not making his presence known at all, possibly out hunting.
Her heart rate picked up slightly as started to recognise landmarks close to the shelter. Nearly there, but she didn't even dare looking for the other female. She increased her speed as much as she dared without burning herself out too early and aimed slightly higher to be able to swoop down on the talon worn perch outside.
Since she didn't feel like injuring herself with a reckless dive she extended both wings to slow her descent, hoping that she would not see Silverbirch already waiting inside the shelter as she touched down.

It was clear the luck would not last. The last leg of the race proved to be rather eventful - of the welcome sort, that is. The path she had just taken led her into a patch of dense vegetation and, though it was not impenetrable, did require some time-consuming maneuvers.
Silverbirch was annoyed. A quick glance towards the lower parts of the forest revealed no clear pathway for her to use, therefore she could not glide low like before. Ahead, there seemed to be no relieve either. The Mist grunted, annoyed. the only was to cover more ground fast, it seemed, was the Above. Was she going to risk her life with it, for the sake of a race?
Oh how tempted she was to try. The Mist was no fool, however, and the tales fed to her about how many lives Mudbeak lost to the Above made her wary of it. But did she not have to face it one day? Now seemed to be a good time...
Such thoughts, and many more, ran through her head. Lost in her own thoughts, a sudden hoot from beside her gave her quite a shock. It was a Scout, and quite a new one by the looks of it, asking sheepishly for directions to the very shelter Silverbirch was on her way to.
The Mist grumbled inwardly, but he looked so sheepish and apologetic that she managed a good-natured chuckle and offered to bring him there herself.
Through more dense forests the couple went, and by the time the shelter was in sight Silverbirch was fairly sure she had lost. Sure enough her eyes picked out the Elite landing gracefully on the perch.

Fernfeather was surprised to see not one but two Sentinels approaching the shelter. She hopped out and perched on a branch outside to give the other two more room to land. The male looked a bit nervous when suddenly confronted with an Elite, and she couldn't resist the temptation to put on her most stony face. Fernfeather didn't know his name, but she recognised him as a fairly new combatant. It was all too easy to rattle the new recruits.
"Close," she remarked, and broke her stony expression to smile slightly at Silverbirch, "And well done. Now who's your friend, hmm?"
It had been a good race, and Fernfeather felt refreshed by the experience. In her opinion Silverbirch had performed well, arriving only a little bit later despite Fernfeathers advantages from knowing the area.
