I think they also want to encourage people to try out different things on the site, too
So after you get all the gold you can from posting, you can go play games, rate avatars, etc

So the reason it was implemented was not for spam but to help with inflation. This was when a lot of changes to the gold gain system were put in. And it's actually pretty good except I prefer the old system. Now, while you get a lot to begin with it decreases a LOT quicker and you easily end up getting nothing for voting or posting. It used to be that you would get much less to begin with (maybe 20g) but it would also decrease less and take MUCH longer to hit 0. I preferred that. I felt like bumping was more worth it then.
