Djevelsk Unfortunately I'd probably have to ban myself from a pen name. Simply due to the fact I'd have far too much fun with it.
Anita c**k Ben Dover
I could probably muster up some more, I need to recover more. Here's another one (which I can't take credit for, since I came across it in a Star Trek fanfiction): Haywood Jablome. Oh, and there was a boy at my high school named Guy Doer. His brother's name is Gnome. Phil Ahtio could also work.

I publish under a pen name for two reasons. First, and least likely, is that if my books become famous, I want to keep some of my privacy. Second, and more realistically, is that I work at an elementary school and write M/M erotica. Using my real name would be asking for trouble, lol.
If I ever get my mind out of the gutter and manage to write YA fantasy books, I'll use the name Edward Sledge. If I ever write a children's book, I'll use the name Aurora Webley.

When the day comes that what I'm working on gets published (I say 'when' and not 'if' because I don't care how long it takes, I'm going to get published!) I'll be using a pen name. I came up with it a couple of years ago and fell in love with it, and I've been using it as my online name for ages now.
Aside from the fact that I've always thought pen names were awesome, I wouldn't want to use my real name for two reasons that have already been mentioned by other people. 1) It doesn't sound right to me when I imagine it on the cover of a book, and 2) I'm not that huge a fan of it anyway.
The only issue I'm even the slightest bit worried about is the fact that it's the same name as one of the characters in the story I'm writing. I chose the name for the character before I decided I liked it enough to use it myself, but I wouldn't want people thinking that I was trying to do a self-insert or anything. But I'll leave that thought on the back burner.

I plan on using my real name, J. N. Teichgraber, for any serious prose, such as my current novel venture (posted in this guild and around the web.) I may include my first name when I get published.
For my casual projects around the internet I tend to use my pen. Which has evolved over the years. My first pen name was Spiget and I kept that handle for seven years before changing it to Strude-N-Rem. Shortly after acquiring the pen name Strude-N-Rem I ended up shortening it to Strude (which was my username on Gaia for three years, and many people may know me by that name, and I still use it as my pen name around the internet on most galleries I am part of.) While using the name Strude I also manage to tack on a nickname to my pen name, which was George and continues to be George it just happens to be my cyber-nickname!
Recently, I decided to go with my in-game (WoW) name Roslind or Ros for short. So now my official pen name, least for the next couple years, will be Roslind Strude George.
But again when it comes to getting published I plan on using my real name. I am to much of an ego-whore to go around using a pen name. I want people to know who I am.
I've never put any thought into a serious or realistic pen name. I just might start thinking of one. Roslind George is one I may settle on, and simply remove the Strude. As Strude is more of my internet cyber-name/identity and does not sound approprate for publication uses.

My real name is unpronouncable to foreigners, so I'll need an English name. A gender-neutral one, so either with some initials or a neutral first name.
I could loosely translate my name as Felicity German, but man, it sounds silly. mrgreen
Do you think people buy books better if they think the writer is male? Or could I use a female name? If female, it will be Isabel-something.

I say yuss to pen names.
Anyone find François Latreille poetic? If you do I might publish under it, if not I'd look for something else.

The best advice anyone can give you is use what you feel is right. I was going to publish under a male name for my mxm fiction but now I see that as a bad idea. I would rather have either my middle names or initials.
Kokiri - That sounds lovely!

Thanks Desert
I'm afraid it looks quite blockish and the symetry is off. If I publish in english, does it give a foreign exotic feel?

hmm... I have a few pen names I wouldn't mind using... Ame Eddy for a chance, the first letter or my first middle and last name... but still very similar to mine... but I'd only do that if I published well still in school... You know how much crap, good or bad you would get from people...

Kokiri-frantic Thanks Desert I'm afraid it looks quite blockish and the symetry is off. If I publish in english, does it give a foreign exotic feel? To me, it sounds French, so yes, exotic haha.

Mademoiselles Heart Do you think people buy books better if they think the writer is male? Or could I use a female name? If female, it will be Isabel-something. It depends. J.K. Rowling used her initials (well...the K is for her grandmother, since she has no middle name) so Harry Potter would have a higher chance of being read by male readers. I find a lot of female authors tend to use their names in the "female" genres like romance and fantasy, but adopt gender-neutral or male pen names for genres that are more "male" oriented. But, as I said, it depends, as female authors have had success with their real names in "male" genres. I think that is a call you need to make with an editor.

Well, I honestly can't decide. Because I want to be recognized for my work, but I also don't want people that I know to read my work. But I want my friends to read my work, but how do I know that they won't tell people about my real identidy? But if my work goes over well, I want to live a normal life and not one where fans are following me. O_O; Or where people know my name when I go out in public.

My dream is to be one of those crazy authors who publishes multiple books a year. Most publishing companies will only sell one book per author a year so a lot of authors write under multiple pen names.
I was always told that my name would look great in print because both my first and last name starts with K. Plus I have a pretty epic last name. Someone once told my brother (he's a comedian) that his real name sounds like a stage name.
A nice penname option would be Ann Fitzgerald, which are really important family names to my families. Mine, my mother's middle name is Ann, my paternal grandmother's name was Anne, my father and brother's middle name is Fitzgerald, and Fitzgerald was the last name of one of my father's grandmother or something. So they are both very meaningful to me.
Another penname option for me (which I would probably use for humor) is Krystal Claire Knight.
I suppose since my main priority is sci-fi I should use my real name for that. But sci-fi is a male genre, so idk. I can't really think of any male penname, but I might use my first initial and last name, that might look good.

You definitely don't have to plan on using a male name (or even initials--unless you just want to, of course).
