Dawn considered the stick for a moment, her nose crinkling with suspicion. It might be a trick, and her hands might get muddy again. But it was a good stick, long and slim and clean, and she couldn't resist the temptation for long.

She reached out to take it more graciously this time, because they were friends now, or something like it, and because she did not want to lose her balance again. The branch felt good, too; it was solid and heavy, and the bark was rough against her palm. She growled appreciatively and waved it in front of her like a sword, giving small, baby battle cries as she did.

Letting out is own garbled battle-cry, Darsh smacked his stick against hers, though it was a feeble sort of smack. He didn't have a great deal of upper body strength yet and his hand-eye coordination was about what you'd expect of a very young child. Which was to say, not great.

Dawn gave a pleased laugh and flailed her stick without about the same level of success. It didn't matter, though, because she had no intention of really hitting him; it was just exciting to feel so fierce. She blew another, louder raspberry like a spitty war horn, and for the moment forgot all about the mud on her face.

Letting out a weird, ululating shout, Darsh doubled his efforts. Like Dawn, his intention wasn't actually to hit or injure. But she was the first child his age he'd played with and he found that not only was it more satisfying than playing with Auntie Emma (who liked weave ribbons in his hair, which wasn't altogether bad all the time) or Daddy (Who tried to get Darsh to help with chores. Darsh didn't mind feeding the dogs, they were fun. But that was as far as he was willing to go). But it was also far more exciting. He gave his shout again and lunged clumsily, landing himself face-first in the mud puddle.

This was, if anything, far better than the silly noise he had made earlier, and Dawn exploded into giggles. It was, for once, not really rude or mocking, just falling into the mud was so funny, like the kind of thing a cartoon character would do.

"Blech," she said once she could control herself, "Ewww," and started laughing again.

As he sat up, the blue boy wasn't sure how to react to his muddy condition. His lower lip stuck out and started to tremble just a little as his mind wavered between wether or not to cry. But then Dawn laughed. And it wasn't a mean laugh, it was a happy laugh. The lip stopped trembling and his mouth curved upwards. He squelched a bit and smiled more, giggling along with Dawn.

Max chose that moment to glance up from his book to see how his son was doing. "Darsh!" The gangly man rose to his feet and ran over to where the two children were playing, standing above them and looking down helplessly at his muddy child. The boy didn't seem to be hurt, though. "Ah..." He was at a loss. He really was. This parenting thing wasn't quite what he'd expected it to be. He knew he should clean the kid up or something, but they seemed to be having fun. Max let out a sigh.

Dawn was just finishing up her giggles when an older man came over. He was tall, and had a tone that Martin had sometimes, which meant that anything that was fun or she wanted was about to end. She growled at him and waved her stick menacingly, and was trying to decide whether it was worth the indignity to pitch a fit when she was scooped up from behind.

"I'm very sorry, seems I got distracted," Martin said, smiling and holding his daughter out of biting range. "I'm Martin, and you are...?"

Max grinned, lifting his own muddy bundle with relief. Here was someone who appeared to know how to parent! Perhaps he could learn something. "I'm Max. This" He wiggled the blue-and-mud blob "is my son Darsh who seems to have been making friends with your daughter."
